The 2011 Golden Schmoes nominees are announced!

Feb. 10, 2012by:

The official nominations for the 11th Annual JoBlo.com Movie Awards (aka the Golden Schmoes) have been compiled and the official voting will begin on Monday (February 13 - 23), so sharpen your fingernails and get ready to vote for your faves! The winners will be announced on Friday, February 24th, just two days before those darn "Oscar thingies" are handed out.

Even though the record for the most nominations ever had been broken over the past 2 years (INCEPTION had 19 nominations in 2010, which had beaten INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS' record from the previous year with 18 nominations, which had beaten THE DARK KNIGHT's original record of 16 nominations), no record was broken this year, but it feels like a much better balanced round of nominees this time around with DRIVE leading the pack with 15 nominations, followed by Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO with 11 noms and the surprising RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES with 11 nominations as well. Who would have thought that at the beginning of the year, eh?

The four other "big flicks" to receive major nominations were X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, SUPER 8, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4 and BRIDESMAIDS. Other films with multiple nominations include WARRIOR (4), ATTACK OF THE BLOCK (4) and 50/50 (4). SUCKER PUNCH also received 4 nominations but two of those categories were not flattering nominations (Most Disappointing and Worst Movie of the Year).

Last year, INCEPTION led the nominations with 19 (although it ended up winning only X), with THE SOCIAL NETWORK and BLACK SWAN both with 12 nominations each.

MOST NOMINATIONS
Drive (15 nominations)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (11 nominations)
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (10 nominations)
X-Men: First Class (7 nominations)
Super 8 (7 nominations)
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (6 nominations)
Bridesmaids (6 nominations)

Remember that each person can vote only once for the Golden Schmoes, but you needn't be a member of our site to do so. We will also be running our 12TH ANNUAL OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST this year, so stay tuned for that as well. See previous years' GOLDEN SCHMOES winners below, along with this year's crop of nominations per category. Thanks for participating!!

Somebody should definitely clarify "over-underated" by who? the public? the critics? To me, theses two category are pointless if there is no direction given.

It's a common thing when a movie is so loved on this site it develops an equally big backlash claiming it's overrated. But overrated by movie-geek standards.

I may skip the voting this year. Havent seen most of them, kind of surprised Thor or Captain didnt make any major nominations. I thought Captain was the best Marvel movie yet

You can always count on the Golden Schmoes to favor blockbusters over indie films, which is cool. I kept my expectations in check and never thought Tree of Life, The Artist, or Melancholia would actually get any major nominations so this is cool. I would have liked a bit more Harry Potter, love, though. Especially over Rise of the Apes which is only half of a good movie.

Great noms

Love the noms overall. You just know Drive is gonna "drive" away with this (sorry, couldn't resist). Definitely would've liked to see Tom Hardy show up in Best Actor for Warrior though (and for his fight at the end to get some love). But generally great overall. Been a big fan of the Golden Schmoes since they started!

No Olsen love?

Pretty cool overall, though I wish Elizabeth Olsen were getting the attention she deserves for her turn in Martha Marcy May Marlene; she was amazing! I was hoping the Schmoes would make up for the fact that the Oscars overlooked it, but o well.

Perhaps not enough people have seen it...

It is good to see Drive do so well, though.

"Best Action Sequence of the Year: Transformers 3 - Robots vs Chicago"?
That wasn't a scene, that was the second half of the movie!

Well to me a sequence can be a combination of scenes... but if that's your interpretation of it then I guess so.

Absolutely not. Don't get me wrong, I really dig this line-up, but I shudder to think the day when movies like "The Artist" don't get a nod from the Academy. They miss a lot of great opportunities, but it's the reason we've got the Schmoes.

just because it was better than revenge of the fallen doesn't mean it wasnt still a shitty forgettable movie. It's not gonna win of course, but it still doesnt make up the fact it was a forgettable piece of shit.

There's already one MTV Teen Choice Awards event that I have to hear about. You guys nominate just above their juvenile standards. But I guess you can't expect brains from an event with a "T&A" category.

Not one best movie nominee is on the Oscars list for best picture. Thought that was interesting. All the movies nominated were good tho but I'm pulling for Warrior. Disappointed Dominic Cooper didn't get the recognition for Devil's Double though.

Where is Warrior on the most overrated nominees? Finally checked out Drive this past wknd, definitely much better than Warrior but still a lil overhyped on this site, what a shock! Surprised by all the hate for Sucker Punch though. Rise of the Planet of Apes really surprised me so I can agree with the hype on here. 50/50 was a great movie also & Anna Kendricks is a lil cutie. I'll probably vote for any category The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is in, my favorite of the year.

this years movies were kinda meh. Alot of the big movies this year i thought were really over hyped: Drive, Bridesmaids, Tree of Life (none bad, just overhyped). Anyway, this year was just a glimpse of the awesomeness to come in 2012, can't wait!

Like most of the nominees but I guess I am in the minority here to have liked Sucker Punch. Think it's a great action flick and one of the most visually striking movies of the year. I mean, its not in my top ten or anything, I just think there were FAR worse movies.
