The 2012 Golden Schmoes nominees are announced!

Feb. 8, 2013by:

First of all, thanks to everyone who voted for their favorites! The official nominations for the 12th Annual JoBlo.com Movie Awards (aka the Golden Schmoes) have now been compiled and the final voting will begin on Monday (February 11 - 21), so sharpen your fingernails and get ready to vote for your faves. The winners will be announced on Friday, February 22nd, just two days before those darn "Oscar thingies" are handed out.

No records were broken this year in terms of the most nominations of all-time (that record still belongs to INCEPTION with 19 noms in 2010 with INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS in 2nd place with 18 noms in 2009 and THE DARK KNIGHT in 3rd spot with 16 noms), but there was a nice balance achieved this year with films like DJANGO UNCHAINED and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES getting 13 nominations each, the most of any film, followed closely by THE AVENGERS with 12 noms.

Tarantino always does well at the Golden Schmoes -- BASTERDS won "Favorite Movie" in 2009 while KILL BILL: VOLUME II was runner-up for the same in 2004 -- but Nolan ain't no slouch either. BATMAN BEGINS won "Favorite Movie" in 2005, THE DARK KNIGHT won in 2008 and INCEPTION won in 2010! The dude even won 6 Golden Schmoes awards, including the "Most Underrated Movie of the Year", for his first major film MEMENTO back in 2001 (the only film to get more awards that year was Peter Jackson's THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING).

The two other "big flicks" to receive major nominations were SKYFALL and PROMETHEUS with 8 nominations each, followed by THE CABIN IN THE WOODS with 7 noms, LOOPER and SSILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK with 6 noms each while ARGO and DREDD 3D had 5 noms respectively. I was personally very happy to see CABIN, DREDD and LOOPER with so many nominations. Way to vote, schmoes!

Last year, DRIVE led the nominations with 15 but ended up winning only 6 of them, although in its defence, that was the most wins from any film last year.

MOST NOMINATIONS (2012)
Django Unchained (13)
The Dark Knight Rises ((13)
The Avengers (12)
Skyfall (8)
Prometheus (8)
Cabin in the Woods (7)
Looper (6)
Silver Linings Playbook (6)

Remember that each person can vote only once for the Golden Schmoes, but you needn't be a member of our site to do so. We will also be running our 13TH ANNUAL OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST this year, so stay tuned for that as well. See previous years' GOLDEN SCHMOES winners below, along with this year's crop of nominations per category. Thanks for participating!!

Most Overrated Movie: "The Avengers"

good flick, but it's overrated.
No love for "The Perks of Being A Wallflower"?
I think Joblo needs to make a separate category for "Best songs in a film" and "Best music" original score only.

Weak

Pretty standard choices. The Academy would approve. The Cabin in the Woods should be in the Most Overrated category. That is all.

I'm fine with most of the choices this year. Although I still say "Zero Dark Thirty" should be in the Most Overrated category and Piper Perabo should've been listed in the Best T & A category for "Looper."

Of course...

...the ravenous Tarantino followers would put Django Unchained into almost every category they could, except the Most Overrated (which it is).

pretty tepid choices.

seems like a combination of popcorn fluff and obscure oscar nominees. only one in the favorite movie category would make my top five.

Solid choices

Of course I had a couple of different choices myself - don't worry, I'm not going to mention them here - but these are as close to my picks as any awards out there. Again, great job schmoes!

Too bad Looper didn't make the cut for Most Overrated, cuz that's what I would go for. Instead I'll just have to settle on TDKR.

Prometheus is a lock for Biggest Disappointment.

The Raid

The word raid is only found once on this whole page, and it belongs to the ending sequence in Zero Dark Thirty.
JoBlo is one wicked site, but the man himself should of vetoed any votes and slapped The Raid in some kind of category. Hell, make a whole new one just to include it.

Is it a 2011 release or something? Because if it was, amend 2011 and recognize greatness.

I'm starting to feel like I must belong to a very small group of people who absolutely loved The Master as a whole. Yes, all 3 noms are deserved, but I have only seen the film once, in theaters months ago, and it continues to resonate with me and I find myself to this day thinking of all the possible angles you could take away from the story...P.T's best? No way. Better than 90% of films last year and on par with Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, and Django? In every respect I say yes. Kinda bummed it

Kinda bummed it seems like the actual film seems to be met with mostly tepid reactions. Oh well, with that exception, as always I love all the noms and wacky categories and am looking forward to voting/ finding out the winners of this years Golden Schmoes!

I'm totally with you. I was working in Palm Springs when I saw the movie in Hollywood and the whole drive back, I was still awestruck by what I had just witness. The movie remained in my head for days... But I disagree with one thing : it is definitely P.T. Anderson's best!

Everyone has their own opinion and I respect that but it's really ironic seeing people complain about the Oscar nominees then choose the Golden Schmoe Nominees...

The Grey

i finally got around to watching "The Grey" yesterday, and i can't believe how bad it was. Im not going to go into detail, but i can see why some people would kinda like it. To me it looks like the categories it got here were scrapping the barrel to fill them out.

And i'm sad "Fuck You Science" from 21 Jump Street didnt make the quotes list

What is the most popular movie wins it. Nothing to do if it's good or not. I bet that the favorite movie of the year and the most overrated movie of the year will be won by the same movie.

I agree with Mrscreenadict! I am very surprised that Perks of Being a Wallflower isn't on here at all. I know I voted for it in at least a couple of categories. I also know that at least a couple of you saw the movie. Joblo gave it a pretty good review so I just don't understand what happened. Maybe it just got lost in the shuffle.

So the best film of 2012 is snubbed by both the Oscars AND the Golden Schmoes? I'm disappointed in you guys. Did no one but me actually go see The Perks Of Being A Wallflower? Sure, it may not be as "cool" or "hip" as The Avengers or Django Unchained, but I would challenge you to find a better acted, more emotionally engaging film last year. At the very least it should've gotten nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Ezra Miller, though I would also have given it noms for

So because I'm saying good things about a movie that wasn't nominated I must be its producer? Huh? If I was on here raving about The Avengers, no one would assume I worked on the movie. I'm just a guy who really enjoyed a film and is sad that apparently nobody else even saw it. Crazy, right? How dare someone have an opinion outside of the popular majority?

Would have liked to see the plane crash sequence from Flight make it to most memorable scene. I couldn't shake that for days. Also, Kelly Reilly gave a standout performance in that film.

Awesome list

Although I do wish the line "Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!" from The Dark Knight Rises was nominated. Bane had some epic quotes.

Lines that should have been on the top list

"Why don't we change the title from the Seven Psychopaths to the Seven Lesbians who are all disabled and overcome all their spazzy shit and they're really nice to eachother, and two of 'em are black."
"Have some pride in yourself, have some faith in Jesus Christ as your lord and don't tell these scum-sucking motherfuckers nothin'!"
"You can't let the animals die in the movie, just the women!"

All from Seven Psychopaths, and all are better than anything said in the Avengers or Zero Dark

About the Most Memorable Scene of the year:
Argo was great but I don't think that Airport scene is really that special like the one from Cabin, Avengers, or Skyfall.
