The 2012 Oscar nominations! | Movie News

This morning at 8:30am EST/5:30am PST, the nominations for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards will be announced in Hollywood. Former Best Actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence will join Tom Sherak, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, to announce the winners and we've got a live feed from the event that you can watch below. Once the nominees are announced in full, we'll update with a complete list plus reactions. It looks like THE ARTIST and THE DESCENDANTS will be among the big winners but who and what do you think will be the big surprises?
As it turns out, HUGO wound up leading the pack with a grand total of 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. THE ARTIST came in 2nd place with 10 total nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.
There were plenty of surprises this morning including surprise nominations and surprise snubs. In the Best Picture category, THE TREE OF LIFE and EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE, two films that sharply divided audiences and critics, picked up nominations ahead of BRIDESMAIDS, THE IDES OF MARCH and DRIVE. Michael Fassbender and Leonardo DiCaprio were also set aside in the Best Actor race for Damien Bachir for A BETTER LIFE and Gary Oldman in TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY (well-deserved actually).
Rooney Mara was a surprise addition to the Best Actress category at the expense of Tilda Swinton who didn't get nominated for her powerful performance in WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN. And the hotly debated Andy Serkis nominated for RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES amounted to nothing as he was left out EXTREMELY LOUD's Max von Sydow.
Take a look at the full list of nominees below and strike back with your thoughts!

Some nom's are deserving, but mostly confusing as hell, once again proving that the Academy is all politics and under the table tuggies, and absolutely no class.
It what fucked up world is Tin-tin not the best animated film of the year???? Oh yeah... in Hollywoodworld.

I really enjoyed the film but the only part that was really Oscar-worthy was Ryan Gosling's performance. Yet everybody is crying about Albert Brooks, who wasn't all that memorable for the supporting chategory (like prevous fan faves Ledger, Waltz, Bardem, etc...).

I don't think the Academy did a bad job this year. With a few minor exceptions i don't mind the nominations at all. Not crazy about the Best picture section thats for sure. Im not clear on the criteria needed to be nominated (i.e. why Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is nominated) However I'm content with the nominations OVERALL this year.

But just like every year everyone is outraged about the nominations and/or wins, then about the show etc. blahblah. It's getting boring, isn't it?
I couldn't care less about who wins (if ToL would win that obviously would be insane), and still watch the show because I enjoy it and because it's a glamorous night dedicated to movies. Bye.

Really i don't get some of the nomination in the major category, they try to throw a curveball to make it look less predictable but i doubt it will succeed and in the end, most of us will see right through the game they are playing.

As for acting nominations the person who really got snubbed was Leo! Did anyone see him as J Edgar? Now that was a revelation of a performance. He wasn't playing an old man HE WAS one. A truly remarkable performance that is unfortunately not getting the attention it deserves.
I know I'm kind of digging this list even though it doesn't have a lot of the movies that I really enjoyed for pure entertainment purposes (X Men and Warrior) but by this point we should all know how the Academy operates and try and see these films from another perspective....Yeesh, I sound like the president of the Academy or something...I'm not (surprise!) but there are quite a few great movies here worth checking out.

The Oscars are out of touch and we all know it. Yet we care because it is still THE gold standard for film awards. Nothing gets the same immediate recognition. Its political equivalent is becoming president of the United States as opposed to any other electable office. Fassbender and Mulligan being snubbed for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress is a tragedy. By all account Extremely Loud is a mediocre film. For everything they got right (Melissa Mccarthy, Nick Nolte) they got so much wrong.

That said, I did not see a nomination for Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close in the Best Picture category happening. I have yet to read an overwhelming review of the film, almost all the ones I have read have been pretty average. On that note it only has a 48% rating from critics on [link] and only a 67% rating from users. Now I have not seen the film, and I won't dare say it doesn't deserve to be there. But when there are much higher-regarded films that didn't get the nomination out there, I can't help feel like this was a political move. Like, "Oh we better nominate the 9/11 movie or people will think we're anti-American." I don't know, I guess I'll just have to see the film.
There were more great surprises than disappointing ones for a change. Damien Bachir (A Better Life) and Gary Oldman (Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy) both sneaking into the Best Actor category is wonderful. I've yet to see TTSS but I'm a big Gary Oldman fan and I'm confident the nomination is deserved. I thought A Better LIfewas a nice little movie, not a masterpiece, but certainly the best thing about it was Bachir's performance.
I actually predicted the Best Actress category correctly, so needless to say I found no surprises there. The Best Supporting Actress category saw a nomination for Melissa McCarthy for her hilarious performance in Bridesmaids. Truth be told I wasn't as impressed with the film as everyone else, but she definately stole the show and I'm happy to see her nominated. Best Supporting Actor saw two big, and very satisfyng surprises. Nick Nolte, who I predicted would get nominated, but was almost sure I'd be wrong, got the nomination for is amazing turn in Warrior. And Max Von Sydow, who we've been watching for over fifty years (The Seventh Seal anyone?), is nominated for his performance in Extremely Loud..., again I haven't seen the film but I'm confident he's probably one of the best aspects of it. Albert Brooks was left out of this category for his performance in Drive. I think the film is incredibly overrated (apparently the Academy agrees) but I was hoping to see him nominated for taking on a role so much different than what we're used to from him.
The biggest disappointment of the nominations is the snubbing of The Adventures of Tin Tin, a wonderful movie containing some of the best animation I've ever seen. That said, its does eliminate the biggest competition for my favorite film of the year, Rango, in the Best Animated Feature category. I almost wonder if the Academy left Tin Tin off the list because of its use of motion capture technology for the performances instead of tradtional "drawing," but in my opinion there should be no question that it is an animated picture. Maybe a surprise, maybe not, is Cars 2 not getting nominated. I'm not saying it deserved it, because cute as it may have been it wasn't a great movie, but to see Pixar left out of this category is a rarity.
There were no major surprises in the Screenplay cagegories except for Margin Call. It's a good movie and certainly deserving of a nomination for its writing. Best Director was another category with no surprises, though I'm glad to see one of my favorite filmmakers, Woody Allen, nominated for my second-favorite movie of the year, Midnight In Paris. If I could control the Oscars it would win for Best Picture, but I know it's not gonna happen.

On another note, thankfully Rooney Mara got nominated. She made that role her own and was way better than Rapace was in the Swedish version.
I do wish that Kirsten Dunst was nominated over Meryl Streep. Why does Streep keep getting nominated. We get it. She is great in everything. About time they stop nominating her, especially since she hardly ever wins, and give someone else her spot.

Very surprised about TTSS getting a screenplay nod seeing as how that was perhaps the biggest problem with the film. Oldman's nomination wasn't entirely unexpected, but I found it to be perhaps his blandest performance.
Also a little peeved about Tilda not getting her much deserved nomination for Best Actress. She wouldn't have won, but it would have been nice to see her at least get the nod.
Completely shocked to see that Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close got a nod for Best Picture, especially since it was certified rotten with a 48%. I guess I actually have to see it now though I've heard mostly bad things about it.
The last surprise was that Albert Brooks was snubbed for his performance in Drive after being the frontrunner throughout awards season. Very strange for SAG and now the Academy to leave him off.
Anyways, most of these categories already seem to be decided. Now we just need to sit back and wait to see The Artist take Best Picture... unless some kind of huge upset occurs.

Yeah, it's rather predictable, but I'm more impressed with this year's line-up then I have been since probably 2008 (when No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, and Michael Clayton all made the cut).

Overall a disappointing list of nominees. A few deserving, many underwhelming.

Peter Howell of the Toronto Star gave the film one out of four stars saying that "[the] film feels all wrong on every level, mistaking precociousness for perceptiveness and catastrophe for a cuddling session. It's calculated as Oscar bait, but the bait is poisoned by opportunism and feigned sensitivity".

Hugo is the only movie there that I would've paid cash money to see, but it wasn't out long enough for me to catch it.
