Hoping For Lowest Ratings Ever

I have never been so disappointed or pissed off. This year's noms are the safest of the safe and the blandest of the bland. I urge all of you to skip the show this year, as the Academy doesn't deserve anyone to watch them after this fiasco.

My dad didn't watch the Oscars when TDK got left out. It was the first time in my life we didn't watch the Oscars b/c he said that the best movie that year was not nominated. This will be the first year in my life that neither of us will watch the Oscars. I FUCKING hope they notice. This is a joke.

The ONLY thing that makes about these noms is that finally Gary Oldman has been recognized. Being overlooked for decades... the man that is essentially the reason i became so infatuated with film and all things related...and probably will never have this chance again WILL BE KNOWN, by more than just us ex video store clerks. way to go, congrats GO... no shot in hell at winning, but the nom is...

War Horse???

Really? Why does War Horse get nominated for best picture and Drive gets left out? War Horse was... meh, but it does NOT deserve best picture. Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of all time, but he really disappointed me here. I don't think it will win, maybe it will, but either way... seriously?

Enough of the DRIVE crying!

I've just seen Drive today and while it was good it wasn't as great as all the guys here are talking about.
I really enjoyed the film but the only part that was really Oscar-worthy was Ryan Gosling's performance. Yet everybody is crying about Albert Brooks, who wasn't all that memorable for the supporting chategory (like prevous fan faves Ledger, Waltz, Bardem, etc...).

The Golden Globe's rules consider Tintin an animated Movie. However the Academy's rule about animated films using Motion Capture disqualifies Tintin. Thus the Academy doesn't Recognize Tintin as an animated film because Spielberg used Motion Capture. On top of that, The Academy allows Motion Capture but only a certain % of the film.

Congrats to Jonah Hill, I am just tickled that he can now claim on his resume 'oscar-nominated actor' for the rest of his career. And while he's great in Moneyball...I cannot objectively say he gave a better performance than Albert Brooks or Andy Serkis.

It's funny how everyone seems to think the nominations should match their own likings. Sure there are some misses, but there are many hits as well and it's always been that way. It's not about getting it "right". If you understand how the academy works, you shouldn't be that surprised.

And Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and The Help aside, it's a pretty strong line up for Best Picture, with quality movies made by artists who care about movies.

Such a weak year

Just looking at this lists of nominations is kind of depressing. There really wasn't anything spectacular this year. I definitely think Michael Parks should have been nominated for his role in Red State. Rag on the movie if you want (I personally love it and think it should be up there for best original screenplay and much more) but Parks perfromance in that was incredible. Way better than most...

Way better than most of the actors on those lists. I also think it's a shame that Serkis got snubbed for Ceasar. Just watched Rise of the Apes last night and his performance was incredible. His nomination, and possible win, would have been the perfect publicity this show needs. They had a chance to do something very unique and special here and they dropped the ball. I mean I wouldn't expect him to win but to atleast be acknowledged would have been ground breaking.

Well as much as I loved "drive" im OK with it not on the best pic list, however why didnt the academy recongnize the best reviewed / biggest franchise of all times final movie? Harry Potter 7 P2!!! Im not even a big HP fan but that movie was fantastic, it shoulda got some love i.e. LOTR style

No Winnie the Pooh or Arthur Christmas?

I'm surprised (and not in a good way) that neither Arthur Christmas nor Winnie the Pooh got nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film category, considering they got the best reviews of any animated film released last year.

And I agree with Director003: Tintin was made using motion-capture, which means it's automatically disqualified for the Animation category.

Okay, don't everyone hate on me too much...
I don't think the Academy did a bad job this year. With a few minor exceptions i don't mind the nominations at all. Not crazy about the Best picture section thats for sure. Im not clear on the criteria needed to be nominated (i.e. why Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is nominated) However I'm content with the nominations OVERALL this year.

Its a great list. Except for "Extremely Loud". I'm glad "Tree of Life" got nominated. I really never grasped all the love "Warrior" got on this site. Its a very average, predictable movie. I felt like I had seen it before when I first watched it. I do wish "Dragon Tattoo" had gotten nominated for Best Picture. And Fassbender for "Shame".

They did a terrible job this year. Drive is one of the best films of the year and did not get nominated while Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close got a nomination and received very underwhelming reviews. Also Shailene Woodley did not get a supporting actress nod. Ridiculous

No love for Michael Shannon for Take Shelter or John Hawkes in martha marcy may marlene...granted I know neither did box office numbers and we all know that's what really counts not the persons performance when getting nominated...and I thought Brad Pitt was better in Tree of Life than he was in Moneyball...but that's just my opinion.

Is it just me or was the Descendants completely overrated? Warrior gets fucked over and so does the Devil's Double. Dominic Cooper got fucked on this one. Golden Globes actually does a better job this year. Now I see why Eddie Murphy opted out.

Those two slots should've gone to Patton Oswalt for Young Adult (supporting), and Dominic Cooper for lead in The Devil's Double (which for some reason everyone has been ignoring. Why does "Best Animated Film" still exist? Since its entries are already eligible for best picture (TOY STORY 3), there doesn't seem to be much reason to keep the category around. Hugo is without a doubt one of the best films to be released in the past few years and if you haven't seen it and you love cinema do yourself a favor and check it out. Also glad to see some love for Tree of Life which was by far the most engrossing film to be released in years. Wow! Watched it again last night and I'm glad to see it being nominated and that its not nearly as esoteric as one might think. The Help is one of the most important films released in the past few years, Midnight in Paris is a unique little tale pulled off spectacularly and War Horse is the beard doing what the beard does best now in a period piece drama. The artist was something out of the box and the Descendants bored me when I saw it initially but I kept analyzing it for a week after so there must have been something there. And Moneyball was a sports film that broke the mold yet maintained its inspiring tone. All in all its a pretty decent list.

As for acting nominations the person who really got snubbed was Leo! Did anyone see him as J Edgar? Now that was a revelation of a performance. He wasn't playing an old man HE WAS one. A truly remarkable performance that is unfortunately not getting the attention it deserves.

I know I'm kind of digging this list even though it doesn't have a lot of the movies that I really enjoyed for pure entertainment purposes (X Men and Warrior) but by this point we should all know how the Academy operates and try and see these films from another perspective....Yeesh, I sound like the president of the Academy or something...I'm not (surprise!) but there are quite a few great movies here worth checking out.

We Need To Change the Awards Season Gold Standard

Fassbender and Mulligan being snubbed for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress is a tragedy. By all account Extremely Loud is a mediocre film. For everything they got right (Melissa Mccarthy, Nick Nolte) they got so much wrong.

Very glad Bridesmaids got some recognition. A bit too much love for Moneyball, TTSS, and The Tree of Life though. 50/50 seems to be absent, but glad that Kung Fu Panda 2 made it on the list. I felt that The Adventures of Tintin was really disappointing, so I really don't care that it didn't get nominated.

Sure Drive, Warrior and some other good, more edgy stuff (good to see Nolte got a nom though) got robbed in some of the categories but I didn't really expect them to get nominated. This year OSCAR decided to only nominate between 5-10 films for Best Picture, not a set number like in years previous. In order for a film to get nominated it had to be voted number one by a certain percentage of the Academy. This way they would avoid nominating less worthy films just to...

Well, its time to talk OSCAR. I did pretty bad predicting the nominations (though I almost expected to.) This year OSCAR decided to only nominate between 5-10 films for Best Picture, not a set number like in years previous. In order for a film to get nominated it had to be voted number one by a certain percentage of the Academy. This way they would avoid nominating less worthy films just to fill out the space.

That said, I did not see a nomination for Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close in the Best Picture category happening. I have yet to read an overwhelming review of the film, almost all the ones I have read have been pretty average. On that note it only has a 48% rating from critics on [link] and only a 67% rating from users. Now I have not seen the film, and I won't dare say it doesn't deserve to be there. But when there are much higher-regarded films that didn't get the nomination out there, I can't help feel like this was a political move. Like, "Oh we better nominate the 9/11 movie or people will think we're anti-American." I don't know, I guess I'll just have to see the film.

There were more great surprises than disappointing ones for a change. Damien Bachir (A Better Life) and Gary Oldman (Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy) both sneaking into the Best Actor category is wonderful. I've yet to see TTSS but I'm a big Gary Oldman fan and I'm confident the nomination is deserved. I thought A Better LIfewas a nice little movie, not a masterpiece, but certainly the best thing about it was Bachir's performance.

I actually predicted the Best Actress category correctly, so needless to say I found no surprises there. The Best Supporting Actress category saw a nomination for Melissa McCarthy for her hilarious performance in Bridesmaids. Truth be told I wasn't as impressed with the film as everyone else, but she definately stole the show and I'm happy to see her nominated. Best Supporting Actor saw two big, and very satisfyng surprises. Nick Nolte, who I predicted would get nominated, but was almost sure I'd be wrong, got the nomination for is amazing turn in Warrior. And Max Von Sydow, who we've been watching for over fifty years (The Seventh Seal anyone?), is nominated for his performance in Extremely Loud..., again I haven't seen the film but I'm confident he's probably one of the best aspects of it. Albert Brooks was left out of this category for his performance in Drive. I think the film is incredibly overrated (apparently the Academy agrees) but I was hoping to see him nominated for taking on a role so much different than what we're used to from him.

The biggest disappointment of the nominations is the snubbing of The Adventures of Tin Tin, a wonderful movie containing some of the best animation I've ever seen. That said, its does eliminate the biggest competition for my favorite film of the year, Rango, in the Best Animated Feature category. I almost wonder if the Academy left Tin Tin off the list because of its use of motion capture technology for the performances instead of tradtional "drawing," but in my opinion there should be no question that it is an animated picture. Maybe a surprise, maybe not, is Cars 2 not getting nominated. I'm not saying it deserved it, because cute as it may have been it wasn't a great movie, but to see Pixar left out of this category is a rarity.

There were no major surprises in the Screenplay cagegories except for Margin Call. It's a good movie and certainly deserving of a nomination for its writing. Best Director was another category with no surprises, though I'm glad to see one of my favorite filmmakers, Woody Allen, nominated for my second-favorite movie of the year, Midnight In Paris. If I could control the Oscars it would win for Best Picture, but I know it's not gonna happen.

Best (Dreamworks) Animated Film

Well, it's clearly gonna come down to Puss in Boots or Kung Fu Panda 2. Yes, they were both that good to those who would doubt. I said it before, I'll say it again: Dreamworks is holding the line, and Pixar is falling back. The other studios don't stand a chance this year. No Drive. No Dragon Tattoo. No Andy Serkis. Kung Fu Panda, Rango and Puss in Boots over Tin Tin. At least there's no Cars 2. But overall the worst nominations I've seen in recent memory. Hopefully The Artist just sweeps (as it should), Billy Crystal is mildly amusing and we'll get this boring year over with quickly.

WTF indeed! Only 9 films, so Dragon Tattoo wasn't even top ten, as nothing was?!?! I think I remember that they don't require 10 films, but have the option to have 10.

Tin Tin should be up there. Is Kung Fu Panda 2 really that good? I wasn't impressed much with Rango's story, but it was visually amazing. 'A Cat in Paris' came out in France 2010. Very safe year with the nominated films and host; Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close over Dragon Tattoo among others?

I personally thought Kung Fu Panda 2 was awful. Really just the first movie but with a new villain. Other then that, jokes are the same, schtik is the same, plot is the same. Everything you'd expect from a cartoon sequel, with sobby backstory and pretty weak climax IMO. And I loved the first.

exteremly wrong and incredibly stupid

now i didnt hate the movie extremely loud ove dragon tatoo...

i thought dragon tatoo was the best movie i saw all year i didnt think it would win best picture(actually caught the artist the other day and was very impressed and should win) but i would think it was better than loud and close

...Looks like Howell was right. Sounds like a horrible film on many levels - from wiki-
Peter Howell of the Toronto Star gave the film one out of four stars saying that "[the] film feels all wrong on every level, mistaking precociousness for perceptiveness and catastrophe for a cuddling session. It's calculated as Oscar bait, but the bait is poisoned by opportunism and feigned sensitivity".

This is the worst, most boring line-up ever. At least 2005 (although Crash won) had Brokeback Mountain. Whatever your thoughts on the film, at least it was interesting.

For whatever reason I've not seen a single film on this least and most year's I've seen over half, some years I've seen them all.

Hugo is the only movie there that I would've paid cash money to see, but...

Nick Nolte!!

I agree with mainly everything my fellow my schmoes said below me, but Nick Nolte was freaking nominated for Warrior!! He probably won't win given the politics of these award shoes, but I'm glad to see the nomination and the recognition for a film that deserved a lot better. As for the rest I don't hold much stock.

How does Rango get the nod over Tin Tin? Rango was terrible and I know i'm not the only one who thought so. Also, please don't give Terrence Malick Best Director, so pretentious. I'm also pulling for Gary Oldman for Best Actor, he's amazing and doesn't get enough recognition(cool fact, he does a different voice/accent for every character).
