The 2013 Golden Schmoes nominees are announced!

Feb. 17, 2014by:

VOTING has begun! Check out the nominees and click HERE to start VOTING!

Thanks to your nominations we have now compiled the final list of nominees for The 13th Annual JoBlo Movie Awards (aka The Golden Schmoes)! Final voting begins tomorrow and runs from Tuesday, February 18th through  27th, with winners to be announced on Friday, February 28th, just ahead of the Oscars!

No real surprises in terms of nominations this year, as they're mostly consistent with the popular opinion of the best of the best. However, there were a few nods to note, including Scarlett Johansson for Best Supporting Actress in HER (for which she was blocked from in the Golden Globes), as well as Brie Larson for her work in SHORT TERM 12. Other notable exceptions were MAN OF STEEL with 7 nominations, PACIFIC RIM with 6 nominations, and THE WORLD'S END with 5 nominations. I'm especially happy to see some love for both PRISONERS (4 nominations) and PACIFIC RIM (even if the latter was nominated for both most underrated AND overrated flick of 2013).

No records were broken in terms of MOST nominations (which still belongs to Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION with 19 nominations), but we had some high scorer's for sure. THE WOLF OF WALL STREET took the most nominations with a total of 14 with AMERICAN HUSTLE and GRAVITY tying for second place with a total of 12. 12 YEARS A SLAVE was third place with 9 nominations. Overall, it was a pretty even playing field with a nice range of flicks taking the top spots, even if they were expected.

MOST NOMINATIONS (2013)

The Wolf of Wall Street (14)
American Hustle (12)
Gravity (12)
12 Years A Slave (9)
Man of Steel (7)
Pacific Rim (6)
The World's End (5)

Remember that each person can vote only once for the Golden Schmoes, but you needn't be a member of our site to do so. We will also be running our 13TH ANNUAL OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST this year, so stay tuned for that as well. See previous years' GOLDEN SCHMOES winners below, along with this year's crop of nominations per category. Thanks for participating!

Also, I don't wanna be a "PRISONERS"-whore, but if a film like that, which I found last year's best of filmmaking, doesn't get recognition here after it was left out from most major awards, I'll lose my interest in Golden Schmoes

What???

For years, Golden Schmoes was and Award where films that got snubbed from the Oscars or films that are never meant to the Oscars have a chance to be nominated. But what do I see here? A short list from the actual nominees for the next Academy Awards!

No love for Hansel and Gretel? :(
I thought that would be in the under rated category. Especially if Evil Dead is in best horror. Hansel and Gretel to me is a lot like a Sam Raimi film when he had a more comic attitude.

A year full of movies and this is the best we could come up with? We are in trouble. 3/4 of these movies are literally, barely watchable unless you immobilize yourself somehow in order to sit through them.

"F*ck You, Sally!"

I was seriously hoping that this line would make it into the nominations list. Either that, or Smaug's "I am fire. I am ... death." Both are equally epic.

Good Choices. I would have liked to see Rush nominated for something. How does the ending train sequence in Lone Ranger not make the best action scene nominees? It was way more impressive than half of the other choices.

Worst collection of movie lines ever.

Terrible movie quote nominations. If Pacific Rim doesn't win that category, I'll lose all hope for humanity.

Roger Ebert for best celebrity? Anyone???? Movie critics are celebrities too.

I am a bit disappointed that on one of the biggest movie fan websites in the world, not enough people considered Roger Ebert for best celebrity of 2013. That is a shame. Not out of sympathy, but his death was a great loss, which majority of all film lovers heard about when the news broke and actually reflected on. Not many top film critics put as much effort and time into reviewing films as this man did. I'm not saying that all the celebrities who died are automatically nominees, cause then why

I'm not saying that all the celebrities who died are automatically nominees, cause then why not Paul Walker? His death was tragic. Ebert's death had a greater impact on us. Like losing Steven Spielberg or John Williams, It was a reminder that for most of the nation our favorite "go to" movie critic is now gone. He set the bar for movie critiquing very high, and it's now up to us to look and see films they why he did.

The World's End

Anybody else felt slightly disappointed by it? It was somewhat entertaining, but I thought it lacked something that was in abundance in Hot Fuzz and Shaun.

Trance

Disappointed Trance couldn't pick up any noms anywhere. That movie was great and should be included in Trippiest, Underrated, and Best Music categories. Other than that, I think this is list is well represents the movies of this year. Except for American Hustle getting a lot of love on this site. I feel like people like it because they think they're supposed to.

I have to disagree. Love Boyle, but I thought Trance was garbage. A poor man's Inception. American Hustle was incredible btw, regardless of what critics say.

I agree with "people like American Hustle because they think they're supposed to". The same thing happened last year with Silver Linings Playbook, only that film was actually good. Overrated, boring, not enough interest for a 2 hour plus feature with some pretty good acting, that is American Hustle.

I voted for it for Trippiest Movie and Best Music, but overall it just wasn't very good. Also, Rosario did look hot, but the scene was stupid. They tried to make vagina shaving sound like something philosophical.

We had a decent amount of votes for TRANCE in a few categories, but ultimately not enough to beat the other nominees. This is why it's so important for everyone to vote for their nominees during the nomination period. If folks ignore it then their favorite films, actors, actresses, etc. can easily not make the cut.

Anyway, I'm glad that so many things I voted for made it. That almost never happens when I vote in other awards.

It's trippy for it's cast playing themselves, getting drunk and high while mocking their own movies and careers, filming their own sequels, and while battling the apocalypse and satan. That's pretty trippy.

TV Shows

Good Noms. I really feel Joblo should introduce TV shows category! Come on, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, True Detective and the others. TV shows are getting more awesome year by year and the site even reviews TV shows every week. Its high time, TV shows get some Schmoes awards love here.

"Hermione stole all our shit" Did not get a best quote nod??? No love for Nebraska?

Seriously, no nominations for the great Nebraska?
How is it that Before Midnight did not at least get a screenplay nomination? And Jennifer Lawrence get best actress nod for Hunger Games? Are people just throwing out names without taking any consideration into this?
No acting nods for Jake or Hugh in Prisoners?
Shame to see that American Hustle continues it's climb at being one of the most overrated films in years.

Action Sequence?

I'm happy to see Pacific Rim be nominated in the Action Seqeunce category because I submitted in my nominations but nominating every Kaiju vs. Jaeger battle as the scene? That's pretty much the whole movie and not a sequence. I don't know if I'm being nit picky with it, it just feels like a cheap and unfair option.

Happy to see The Place Beyond The Pines for nominated for Most Underrated, but am disappointed to see Bad Grandpa not nominated for Best Comedy. Easily the funniest film in 2013 in my opinion.

And you guys should do a new category of most anticipated film of next year. That would be cool to vote for.

It depends on how you view the movie. If you view it as a satire it's pretty enjoyable. Either way both Franco and the photography are deserving of awards recognition.

It doesn't work as a satire because it doesn't satirize anything. It just depicts it. And no Franco does not deserve award attention for this

Prisoners underrated???????

The film got mostly positive reviews and did over $120 million around the world. In fact it's currently on imdb's top 250 with over 160,000 votes.
Can anyone who voted for it please explain to me why the hell they think it's underrated!

Overall got nominations this year but bit disappointed that there isn't any real surprise nominations this year, well except for the fact that some people are under the illusion that Prisoners wasn't very well received!

Yeah it hasn't gotten any nominations outside of cinematography really. It did was well reviewed and decent box-office but has been largely forgotten by awards bodies. Both of Hugh and Jake deserve Oscar noms but there's just too much competition this year

But the film was quite successful when it came out, I wouldn't put it in most underrated. Many highly acclaimed films that had great box office didn't win many awards.
Would you describe Heat (95) as underrated?

I think the category should be for films that didn't do very well at the box office or was unliked by most on first time viewing.
