The 50 greatest deleted scenes of all time? You decide!

Mar. 9, 2012by: Paul Shirey

A new list has been generated over at Total Film, this time tackling the 50 greatest deleted scenes of all time.  Some of them are pretty great, some of them rather hilarious, and some of them, well, are better left out of the final film (which isn't to say they aren't "great," just not great for the finished version of the movie).

Some of the highlights include: THE GOONIES "Octopus scene," The original CLERKS ending, the extended "trial scene" from NATURAL BORN KILLERS, the return of Kyle Reese in TERMINATOR 2, the "mouth of Sauron" getting decapitated in LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING, and many more.

Here's their top 10:

  • 10. BOOGIE NIGHTS - Dirk Diggler wins best porn actor extended scenes
  • 9.  STAR WARS: EPISODE IV - A NEW HOPE - Luke and Biggs Darklighter on Tattoine
  • 8. ALMOST FAMOUS - Patrick Fugit plays Stairway to Heaven to sell rock music to his mom
  • 7. LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING - The death of Saruman
  • 6. THE DARK KNIGHT - The Joker ignores the exploding hospital
  • 5. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 1 - Harry and Dudley make nice
  • 4. TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES - Southern accent Arnold
  • 3. STAR WARS: EPISODE V - THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - Luke and Leia's almost kiss
  • 2. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS - Boromir and Faramir celebrate victory
  • 1. MAGNOLIA - "Form a tragedy"

You may not agree on the order of the list, but I think that's inconsequential.  It's pretty comprehensive and includes videos for the majority of the deleted scenes.

Check out the full list here and strikeback with your comments below!

Extra Tidbit: It may not be much, but Luke assembling his lightsaber in Return of the Jedi is one of my favorite deleted scenes not on the list. What's missing on this list for you?

Nice list

Also Austin Powers 3 where Goldmenber sings "Hello Mother Hello Father" is hilarious. Also I concur with No_Fun; Borat's 'What is this?'

Borat: And what is this?
Store Clerk: That's cheese.
Borat: And what of this?
Store Clerk: That's cheese...

Borat: And what is this? Rice?
Store Clerk: No that's cheese, this is all cheese here.
Borat: But this say "Crackers", this not cheese.
Store Clerk: No Crackers is the brand, that's

VeryCool Article

Out of all the cool scenes on this list I feel that only one that absolutely should have been in the final film is the Biggs/Luke scene. This one scene just gives us so much backstory on Luke and his desire to get away from there. Plus it introduces us to Biggs and shows us why he is important to Luke. As a kid I was always so confused at the end when Biggs shows up in the rebel base. I had no idea who this mustached man was and his death really didn't hit the emotional beats it would have had

There's also another really cool deleted scene where Luke is checking a moisture vaporator and looks up in the sky and can see the flashes from the space battle going on between the Imperials and Rebels. very cool. I would much rather see this than the long shots of R2 and 3PO walking thru the desert.

Instead of wasting money redoing that terrible Jabba/Han scene and all the other crap Lucas squeezed into the Special Edition he should have cleaned these deleted scenes up and inserted them.

Since someone already mentioned Die Hard 3

Tropic Thunder - the 'one week down' party scene. This didn't make it into the theatrical release, but it should have. It gave important background to all the key characters before heading to the jungle, was hilarious in and of itself. The movie suffers without the scene and thankfully its in most TV versions of the story & the DC DVD.

As for a deleted scene I'm glad was left out...the whole sequence in 'Aliens' where Newt's family goes all Lost in Space exploring the downed ship from the

As for a deleted scene I'm glad was left out...the whole sequence in 'Aliens' where Newt's family goes all Lost in Space exploring the downed ship from the first film. You see it in James Cameron's director's cut and its just awful. Ditto the bit where 30 poorly-constructed aliens sacrifice themselves testing the sentry guns 'Zulu' style.

Deleted ending to Butterfly Effect is the end of the film in my opinion. Also, don't forget the slew of memorable Donnie Darko deleted scenes and its poorly filmed death scene.

And I completely agree with the Harry/Dudley scene ranking high. Of all the short filmed sequences they could have left out of the book to film conversion...

If we're including extended editions, I feel a lot of scenes from Kingdom of Heaven that were cut out for the theatrical version should be included. Maybe not any single scenes, but as a whole they add a lot to the movie.

Removing the death of Saruman from the theatrical cut of ROTK made no sense. There was a very strong rumour it was done to make room for Andy Serkis' live-action scenes where he finds the ring. Why? Because they were desperate to make history by getting him Oscar-nominated for Gollum. Don't know how much truth there is to it, but either way, Christopher Lee deserved to have closure for that character.

Most of the deleted scenes from The Incredible Hulk (2008) just break my heart. So much complexity and character cut. Norton and Hurt are AMAZING in a few. What was Marvel thinking cutting that stuff???

Southern Accent Ahnold...

When I first saw the "southern accent Ahnold" clip many years ago, I thought it was a funny bit filmed as a joke for the DVD, not a scene that would actually have made it into the movie. As much as I like that scene, I don't think it would have fit into the film.

As much as people dislike the prequel trilogy, the Star Wars prequels had some pretty interesting deleted scenes that, due to his endless resources, George Lucas was able to go back and finish (visual effects etc) for inclusion on

The Phantom Menace has a redundant but cool action sequence with the bongo submarine going over the waterfall, and Episode II had a bit with Anakin meeting Padme's parents and sister, which was decent character development compared to what made it into the film.

Die Hard 3

Not sure if it counts, but the alternate ending is so much better than the theatrical one. It would have been a really interesting setup for McClane's character in any future installments.

Also, the deleted stuff from This is Spinal Tap is comedy gold. Does anyone own one of the fabled bootleg cuts of the film?

Um...

Whoever made this list clearly hasn't bothered to check out the extras on their copy of The Godfather Trilogy. The best deleted scene I have ever watched is the chilling moment in Part II in which Vito kills the guys who work for Don Ciccio, just before the non-deleted scene in which he tracks down the Don and slices up his belly.

Favorite Deleted Scene

Gladiator. When Commodus walks in front of the executioner bows. Shows how crazy he really is.

Also Terminator 3 deleted scene was awesome. I am glad they kept it out, but it was awesome.

The Mouth of Sauron scene was the main reason I got the extended cut of ROTK. I just thought it was cool seeing it. It didn't work in the movie like it did in the book but was still great to see. Plus I'm a huge fan of the movies.

All the scenes that took place between Leia's capture by Jabba the Hutt...

...and when Luke walked in on her laying very comfortably before him, in her state of undress, some unspecified later day. ;)

(Oh yes I DID!)

I love the Borat masseuse scene, but the "That's cheese." deleted scene at the grocery store is priceless. It would have thrown off the pacing a bit, but my friends, girlfriend, and pretty much anyone I know who has seen it will quote that scene any time a chance comes up.

I like the idea that the Terminators were based on an actual army guy, but I despise the accent
