The alternate opening for The Avengers has more Maria Hill and an attitude to boot

Aug. 28, 2012by:

Some more deleted scene goodness has arrived for Marvel's THE AVENGERS, this time in the form of an alternate opening, which radically changes the perspective of Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) from the final film. In the alternate opening, Hill is being questioned by The Council, who bring up her disdain for Nick Fury's methods. It's a bit more in line with Hill's comic book persona, but it contradicts her seemingly agreeable stance with Fury at the end of the theatrical cut of the film.

Have a look:

It's always cool to see an alternate openings and endings and this is definitely interesting. I can see why it was cut, both for Hill's attitude and the potential of showing Captain America and the Hulk too soon, but it's still a fun thing to see.

What do you think? Do you prefer this opening to the theatrical one?

THE AVENGERS hits blu-ray and DVD on September 25, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: Although I'll miss a certain other SHIELD agent, I'm looking forward to seeing Maria Hill pop up in the Phase 2 films. You?

Good deleted scene. Interesting, gets you to rethink certain aspects of the film, but doesn't fit at all with the finished product.

How? This kind of shows Maria Hill's distrusting side towards The Avenger's Project. Makes total sense to me.

Interesting scene but glad it was cut. I don't like how it sets up the movie as a flashback instead of the opening we got.

You know that other SHIELD agent isn't dead, right? They even show you the evidence in the film. Stark's PoV shot and reaction after his chat with Cap at the scene of the death tells it all. Or are you just playing coy for the benefit of the three people on earth who have not yet seen The Avengers? =) As for Smulders, can't stand her in her TV show, loved her in this.

The one thing that leads me to believe he may well still be alive is very simple; there was no funeral. The Avengers couldn't have ended any other way unless he was actually dead. The "high-five" ending that is would be monumentally disrespectful if there was no funeral scene.

That said, Smulders has been said to appear in Iron Man 3 and I'd bet good money she'll pop up in Cap 2. However, the fallen SHIELD agent returns is anyone's guess...and there are many.

And yeah, it's kind of

And yeah, it's kind of annoying to still keep spoilers under wraps, but the spoiler nazi's out there lose their shit every time anything is mentioned...about anything...ever.

I wish they would have showed this clip as one of the ending scenes because this shows the Maria Hill of the comics, the woman who pretty much starts a heroes civil war.

I'm not a fan of using this to open the film proper, but I really like Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and this scene shows that she has more to bring to the character.

Good scene, but it really shows its full potential when seen alongside the alternate ending (actually better than the theatrical one)...

Watched my copy of Avengers last night on Blu-ray and it rocked. The gag reel is funny as. So glad to see the end of credits scene with the gang sitting around eating takeaway. The five times I saw it in the theatres all they ever showed was the scene with the purple guy ( sorry forgot his name). Can't wait to get home from work to watch it again.

I don't like how the scene is a flashback. Although I do like the perspective it gives from Maria Hills standpoint. This is obviously more true to her comic book character. It would lead one to think that a Civil War arc is still possible. Maybe after the events of Infinite Gauntlet or Annihilation? Not really sure which of those two arcs they will be incorporating with the big purple Titan.

Interesting and different but...

It makes no sense given the chain of events in the film and its tone. I think the theatrical opening was excellent.
