The Amazing Spider-man breaks a box office record and confirmed to be the first of a trilogy

Jul. 5, 2012by: Alex Maidy

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN already had a sequel in the bag before the release of the film a couple of days ago. Now that it has set the record for the biggest Tuesday opening of all time with $35 million, Sony has confirmed a second sequel will be coming as well.

Per THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN's Facebook page:

It's finally here! The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero's journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents.

The reviews have been pretty good for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN with many saying it is good but not quite as good as Raimi's first two SPIDER-MAN films. Director Marc Webb has not signed on for a sequel but Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield are locks. Could we have another HUNGER GAMES style issue with kicking the director to the curb as soon as the movie opens huge at the box office?

It remains to be seen if THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN will hold ground at the box office past this opening week like THE AVENGERS did. With THE DARK KNIGHT RISES looming on the horizon only a few weeks away, it looks like it may be tough going for your friendly neighborhood webslinger, if you consider a $150 million opening week tough going.

Extra Tidbit: The best thing Sony can do is reach an agreement with Disney to get Spider-man in THE AVENGERS 2.

Ican't believe how split the opinions are. Some people love this movie and some people hate this movie. I guess I'll wait until someone posts a "your thoughts on spiderman" to express my ideas.

I don't understand all the hate for this movie.

I personally enjoyed this film a lot more than Spiderman 1 and 3. The Amazing Spiderman is just below Spiderman 2 in my opinion. As for The Avengers, happy that it made a shit load of money, but I wasn't really a fan of it. I thought the first half of it was rather weak and the writing was bland. It was almost to the point of it being a sitcom. Like, how many times do we have to hear Bruce Banner talk about how he it's not good to have him enclosed in a tight space. He seriously brought the

Most of the people who are hating on this movie are hating on it still because they don't want to admit it was a good film.

Saw this on Tues and found it quite excellent. Garfield is far superior to Tobey in every way. I actually gave a crap about the characters in this one. Sheen and Field are quite effective with their limited roles and the addition of Peter's parents was very welcome. I found the story quite interesting, although I must say I thought Dr Connors was a bit bland, I was hoping to see a bit more obsession out of his character and that drive do whatever was necessary to get what he wanted. I respect ur opinion, but one thing i hated was that the camera in the action scenes was moving too damn much. The highschool battle was great imo because that camera stood still when spidey wrapped Lizard in his web, but in the final battle i could see what was happening but not as clear as it should be.

I feel it better to view this seperately from the other movies, its natural for people to wanna compare the 2, but its not fair to say who portayed Parker & Spidey better.

Webb vs. Raimi

Webb's direction is superb. I love Raimi and Spider-Man 2 still remains as my all-time favorite, but I truly believe once the Amazing Spider-Man 2 is released and lacks a Spider-Man origin story, it will truly strive. I felt myself comparing this film to Raimi's version throughout, but here's something I don't get: if you prefer Raimi's version, don't watch Webb's. These superheroes are going to change actors as much as Bond does. It's going to happen eventually, and though this remake is

These superheroes are going to change actors as much as Bond does. It's going to happen eventually, and though this remake is only ten years after the original, eventually new people will replace the old. Look at the Avengers. The Hulk's been three different actors over the course of nine years. There are plenty of films I love (Jaws, Jurassic Park, Alien, Terminator, etc.) where poor sequels don't kill my love for the originals. Spider-Man 3 is utter garbage, and 1 and 2 are good and great. Just be happy you have something you like. I didn't think the Amazing Spider-Man was trampling on or destroying the character in any way. The only place that bothered me in the whole film is the fact I felt I've been told this story before, but once it got passed that, it's pretty good. It might have some plotholes, but so did Raimi's.

Amazing!!

I had my doubts but it was awesome. Can't believe most peeps on this site is hating this movie most coming from people who said they haven't seen the movie. Andrew Garfield was 1000 times better Spiderman/ Peter Parker. I love all the Spiderman movies It was a great film. I saw the midnight showing and everyone in the theater clapped at the end of it and gave it praise.

Awesome

I can't wait to see the inevitable divide between Spidey fans on which trilogy is better. I personally have high hopes that Webb's trilogy will end up being better than Raimi's. No offense to him, but his trilogy ended on a pretty bad note and Webb's trilogy could give it the rejuvenation the franchise needs, kind of like Christopher Nolan and Batman. Also, Garfield makes for a much better Peter Parker, just saying...

i just dont know

I have been hard on all the early footage of this movie and have held out little hope for it. When i read people's reviews, most dont clearly state what was so great but those who pan it have a thousand cogent arguments. I was going to see it in IMAX but may not even spend the upcharge now. I didnt mind a change of cast but never wanted a reboot. Someone sell me on this with a clear reason why I should bother.
A big DUH on the trilogy and as for box office, it'll kill until July 20th and will

I personally thought the story was top notch. It took its time with the origin story. Parker's reason for becoming Spiderman made more sense and seemed more believable. The characters were well developed as well. We all know what was gonna happen to Uncle Ben, but when it happened, I still managed to feel something. I don't know, it just worked for me. I'm a fan of the Raimi films, but I see the problems with it. Not saying that this is perfect, but it was well done. I like the fact that even

I like the fact that even though Parker wears the suit, he doesn't earn the status of being a Superhero yet. He has to work at it. In Raimi's origin story, he finds Uncle Ben's killer and the he's Spiderman, he doesn't earn that hero role.

Garfield brings much needed emotion to the character. You feel his pain when he loses Uncle Ben, you feel his pain when he thinks about his parents, he's a lost teen-ager trying to fit in and doesnt understand why his parents left him. You really root for Peter, and you see his transformation from a lost, insecure kid to a hero that accepts the responsibility given to him through his accident. The scene where Uncle Ben dies is a really great scene, and Peters scenes with Aunt May really

I liked it, it just felt rushed. I believe they were just doing that cause they didnt want to drag what people already know. So they got all the big stuff out of the way and focused more on the action. I enjoyed it a lot! I like it much more than Sams version. But Sams version had a more serious tone. Then again, what I like about this one, is the comedy and fun action in it. Emma Stone also made a huge difference to me. I thought she was spot on portraying a perfect girl friend.

I REALLY, REALLY hope not. That would be horrible. This version of Spider Man deserves to be nowhere near The Avengers. I mean the first one was pretty amazing (NO PUN INTENDED) without him in it. It's not like having him NOT in it made the film suck.

Liked it but...

Watched it, loved it, and would definitely see it again soon. That being said, the number one thing I took away from this is how Raimi's first two Spidey movies still seem spectacular even after the franchise has been rebooted. It comes to show just how cool Raimi's take on the character was before the atrocity that was Spider-Man 3 came along. All in all, I think this is a cool new take on Spidey with plenty of similarities to the first trilogy, but also a lot of new stuff. It would actually

I really enjoyed this movie...

What was better in this film:
The cast
The story
The emotion
They showed how smart Peter Parker was
Spider-Man (he was witty, like he was supposed to be)
Peter and Flash's relationship

There were some bad CGI moments (not too many, the CGI was actually better than I thought it would be).
There was some bad dialog...example (SPOILER?):

Gwen Stacey: My dad made you promise didn't he?

The whole scene was great and then she said that and I rolled my eyes.

"Hey, that's the guy that saved my boy." Evacuate? No, we aren't going to evacuate and either are those 10 other guys who all owe me a favor....let's line up all the cranes and give him a clear shot...UGH...that was sooooooo stupid and annoying...if I was the editor, that whole scene would have wound up on the cutting room floor. If I was the director I would have ordered reshoots.

BUT it was only four minutes. So, if you add up everything that was "bad," it's probably only 6 minutes of the movie. The rest I loved!!

I give it an A-

I like that Marc "Webb" directed it

I don't have a strong opinion one way or another on this first installment, but I'm hoping to God the next movie will not have Green Goblin. The "end credit" teaser leaves for me many questions. Maybe someone more adept at the Spider-man lore has a better perspective....
Whatever the case, I wouldn't mind another installment; I wish there wasn't a whole hour spent on this first movie re-establishing his origin. 30 minutes would have been fine. Anyway... I'm on board.

They really screwed up with Norman in this movie. He is nothing like his Ultimate, Amazing, or even Spectacular counterpart. Why they made him dying and feeble is beyond me. So for Osbourne to become the green goblin he will have to inject himself with either goblin dna or some other stupid mcguffin. In the ultimate series Osbourne worked with Otto

In the ultimate series Osbourne worked with Otto Octavius to create "OZ". For the next movies to be anything related to the comics it needs to involve Otto, SHIELD, Hank Pym and Harry Osbourne.

It will be screwed up and they will make it the exact same movie as this one except with conners turning into the lizard, we will see Osbourne turn into the Goblin. There is nothing interesting they can do without the people listed above. So for those who think this is the closest rendition of spiderman yet (for from it actually) they are about to get 2 movies that will screw with them and be farther from the comics than anything has ever been.

Count me in as being completely disappointed in this. Dull and generic. That said, a sequel could be a massive improvement if the new screenwriters could write a much better script and a new director can make it actually exciting and engaging.

No

It is kinda obvious that the technology Dr. Connors use in his lab is the same Tony Stark has, so is clear that Sony and Marvel are planning to put Spiderman in The Avengers, but i really think that would be a bad idea. Let the franchise develop like Iron Man did and then u can do whatever u want with it.

Keep this version of spidey out of the avengers.

He does not belong. They need to reboot it to make it similar in tone of the avengers. It needs to be lighter and actually have a better sense of humor.

This movie was incredibly bland and much worse than Raimi's outings, I'm ashamed to have contributed to its financial success as we really don't need to see any more of this incarnation of Spider-Man

Get rid of Webb, hire real screenwriters.

Set it 8 years after the first one and make it watchable by people older than 21. The movie was hipster garbage. I never felt so bored during a comic book movie in my life. If all goes well, they will ditch Webb and hire people who know how to write a good superhero movie. They forced the drama and someone was crying every 10 minutes. It got annoying. The laws of trilogies state the sequel has to be the best, so I am looking forward to it. Also, where will they find Green Goblin dna to mix with

I really wanted to like it, but was VERY disappointed by the film. The story was too rushed, some of the dialogue was terrible, there was no emotional punch to it at all and it had no depth because of it. The action scenes were also way too fast for my liking.

I think this is the weakest Spider Man film and it does not reach the brilliance and detail that the original Spider Man trilogy had done. The original trilogy outdid everything that this movie TRIED to do better.

I think this is the weakest Spider Man film and it does not reach the brilliance and detail that the original Spider Man trilogy had done. The original trilogy outdid everything that this movie TRIED to do better.

The only positives were Gwen Stacy and her father, and The Lizard. Everything else was just terrible. I was also hoping for a good extra scene at the end of the credits foreshadowing Norman Osborne, but it was way too short and didn't explain anything. If that was supposed to be Osborne in the cell with Connors, then I thought it was a shitty attempt. I'm glad that this Spider Man wasn't involved in The Avengers (and I hope isn't with future installments). This Spider Man just doesn't fit with Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury.

They also said they were going for more of a grounded feeling (which is fine), but at most times it felt like it wasn't (i.e. He throws the football and dents the crossbar). I mean come on! That's not really a grounded type of scene. I also didn not like the fact how when he first got his powers he had no control over them. When he first fought it seemed as if it was all jerk reactions coming from his body. It was more fun watching Maguire's Parker/Spider-Man realizing his powers. I also did not like how Garfield's Parker acted shitty towards Uncle Ben and Aunty May in most of the scenes that he was in with them. Parker isn't somone who acts like a total douchbag towards his elders. Maguire's Spider-Man had alot of heart when interacting with his Uncle and Aunt and made it that more emotional in Maguire's version when he had to see him Uncle die in front of him and how it was his fault and his Uncle's death who made him into Spider Man and realize the great power and responsiblity he had and when he went through the difficult financial times with his Aunt in Spider Man 2 and also telling Aunt May the truth of what happened that night.

I am a huge, die hard Spider Man film and really wanted to like this, but I can't and the more I think about it, the more I stay with my choice. I just thought the film tried too hard to differentiate itself from the original trilogy and felt like a remake of the original Spider Man.....just with less depth.

Spider Man 2 still remains (and will always be) the best Spider Man film. That movie was just flawless and perfect. Spider Man 2 is also one of the best superhero films of all time (Top 5). Maguire was also the perfect Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Garfield doesn't even come close to the excellent portrayal that Maguire did with the character.

I'm just glad that we have The Dark Knight Rises coming up in a few weeks, so that it can get the bad taste out of my mouth left by this wretched film.

The original trilogy was just way better and far superior than anything in the Amazing Spider Man. The original trilogy had a lot of heart, beautiful action scenes, a director who paid attention to the little details, and a better leading Spider Man who made you care about him and the people around him.

Masterdebator88- I'm not forcing myself to like it. I enjoyed it., everybody in the theatre was clapping and laughing. It was a fun film. A little slow at the beginning but overall I loved and I will be seeing it again in Imax this sat.

I've got to admit, when I've seen your posts in the past, I've questioned your taste in movies (mainly Green Lantern), but you're right about this movie.

Sally Fields was horribly miscast as Aunt May, the uniqueness of how Spidey got his powers was now gone thanks to this movie (since anyone wandering into that room at Oscorp (with the shitty touchpad pattern recognition that can be read by greasy fingerprints) could get the same powers), how much of a douche Peter was in this movie (leaves Aunt May alone after Ben dies, steals some dude's identity to get to Conners, uses his powers for revenge at school), and then how Peter alternates from being a supposed genius to one of the biggest dumbshits in history (both the camera in the sewer, and the secret formula that's been hidden for 15 years that he just hands over to someone he doesn't know). AND The Lizard still looks like a fucking Goomba! I had the Super Mario Bros. theme playing in my head every time he came on screen. Add in some CGI that looked more videogame cut scene worthy rather than realistic, and the craptastrophe was complete. Plus Peter (in this movie) never became a hero to do what was right, he became a hero to clean up the messes and problems he created. That's not a hero. That's what being a responsible human being is all about.

A hero is someone that performs a selfless act for someone else without the expectation of reward or praise. They do it because it's what's right.
