The Avengers deleted scene focuses on Captain America as a man out of time

Aug. 29, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Some of you may be getting sick of hearing about THE AVENGERS, but I think most of us are still excited to see the onslaught of goodies that have been trickling online in preparation for the film's blu-ray/DVD release. Today, we have another deleted scene, this time the much talked about Captain America sequence, which shows Cap/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) dealing with his modern-day existence, pondering a visit to a now elderly Peggy Carter, getting hit on by a familiar waitress, and being chastised by none other than Stan Lee himself.

It's a great scene, one that feels like it belongs in a Captain America movie, rather than an Avengers film. Regardless, it provides another sobering look at the superhero film, which we got a taste of in yesterday's release of the alternate opening. Seems ol' Joss Whedon had a slightly darker tone bubbling under the surface in his longer cut of the film.

Meet the "man out of time":

It's really cool to see the waitress (Ashley Johnson) interact with Rogers early on, which enhances her commentary about Cap at the end of the film. The Stan Lee cameo is probably my favorite. Just seeing Stan Lee talk to Cap is pretty damn awesome, so that sells it right there.

THE AVENGERS hits blu-ray/DVD on September 25, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: The deleted scene shows Cap drawing, which is actually part of his origin. Originally, Steve Rogers was an artist, but once injected with the Super Soldier Serum, he found a new passion in beating Nazi's up with a big metal serving tray. These things happen.

This was a very, very good scene and is even more proof of how good a writer Whedon is, how strong a hold he has on these characters. The Stan Lee Cameo was also non-intrusive and gave some levity to a rather serious scene. I think Whedon and the editors felt the scene slowed the film down a little, which is why it was excised. I would have liked to see Bucky's files among Howard Stark's and Peggy's, to set up the Captain America sequel a little.

Wow

This really should have stayed in the film. My only dislike with The Avengers was Cap's attitude a lot of the time, but this would have really explained that and given his character some depth. They definitely should've kept this.

Chris Evans really just soaks up this role. Precisely how I always imagined Cap to be.

Amazing scene. Too bad it wasn't included.

I felt more for Steve during that three minute clip than I did the whole film. And I don't think anyone would have griped about a 3+ hr Avengers film. Too bad they didn't go ahead with the rumored re-release.

Best deleted scene so far.

They should have cut the fake documentary at the beginning but kept the rest. Long running time or not, the guy just woke up in the future. This deserves a scene that aknowledge that.

Notice that Peggy's data sheet changes from the one with the SHIELD logo to the one without. That kind of inconsistency feels kind of strange, don't you think?
Anyways, viral marketing aside, they're good scenes.

I liked it

But the deleted scene is an advertisement for Acura and Net 10 phones. This explains why the film is going on blue ray and dvd so quickly. When I heard it was coming in September, I was astonished, I thought that thsi was very fast. Now I know why. But I really liked this deleted scene, Chris Evans really plays up that "man out of time" aspect, the world is strange to him.

Loved it

The scene was awesome and I agree the folks who said it should have been in the movie and I would say that was the best Stan Lee cameo out of all of the films that he has made cameos in.

This should have been in the final cut. I loved The Avengers. BUT I felt that Captain America was the most under developed character and didn't get enough in the film. He is the leader of The Avengers and he became more or less a side character here. I was a little let down because the ending of the solo Cap movie had balls. The smash cut at the end leaving you hanging reminded me almost of an independent cinema styled ending that left you wanting more and when we see him in this one it falls

This here is a fantastic sequence that says alot in a short amount of time and would have been an incredible asset to the film as a whole, but I can only imagine that the studio is who made Whedon delete this so the kids wouldn't shift in their seats. Oh well, maybe one day we will get a director's cut but it is great to see this scene and even great movies have things to point out that could have made it better. It's just too bad they had the one thing that could have made it damn near perfect and left it on the cutting room floor.

This needs to be an extended scene and added to the blue ray. Heck, all of the deleted scenes needs to be added for the blue ray. If not, then I'm going to wait for a director's cut.

Missed oppurtunity from Marvel here.

Not to present them as "deleted scenes" but rather to present them as short films that fill in continuity, much like Caulson shorts on the DVD.
