The Avengers fighting the Skrull? Not so fast...

Dec. 28, 2010by: Mike Sampson

Back in 2009, CHUD's then writer Devin Faraci reported from Comic-Con that he believed the villain in THE AVENGERS would not be Hulk, as had been widely rumored, but instead The Skrulls. Marvel owns the cinematic rights to the Skrull race (though Fox owns Super Skrull for its FANTASTIC FOUR movies) and the rumor has been that they'd be the antagonists in THE AVENGERS.

Flash forward to earlier this week when the Albuquerque Journal ran an article about THE AVENGERS filming in New Mexico and included this line at the end: "The Avengers battle with two alien races, the Skrulls and the Kree."

There was some initial speculation that the newspaper included that line based on some intel received from pre-production sources in New Mexico and that the initial report was accurate. But Superhero Hype contacted Marvel who confirmed that the aforementioned line was simply "a research error" on the part of the paper.

It's possible at one time the Skrull were being talked about as villains for the film but CHUD's initial report came before Joss Whedon had signed on to write and direct the film and it's highly possible he's taking the film in a new direction.

Read the Ultimates and the argument for the Hulk as the villian sells itself. Ive said in past posts about this movie, do the Hulk now and set up the Skree invasion for the next movie.

ya know...

the whole skrulls idea was a-ok, then marvel could get the x-men property back and the silver surfer/ff property back and make the biggest movie in the history of movies...the secret war. That is after they fight skrulls, kree, the real brotherhood, the hellfire club and maybe an inferno crossover. shig, one can dream. um...fuck you joss whedon.

Maybe they could fight The Hulk in the beginning of the movie as a training exercise?

I just don't like the fact how Hulk would be somewhat of a "villian" after seeing him fight for his right to be understood as a misunderstood hero. But I can see why and how it could be an interesting storyline to start off "The Avengers".

Please no Skrulls...

No aliens at all, preferably. I thought they were trying to set these in a more realistic world? Well, as realistic as possible, anyway.

Realistic world, the whole point of The Avengers is to go whole hog on all the sci fi elements in the superhero genre. You got a Norse God, a Frankenstien Monster, a Super Human, and a Modern Hi Tech Knight teaming up to kick ass. It better be some serious ass that needs a kickin', and a bunch of evil aliens provides some much needed canon fodder, ala the Storm Troopers or Klingons. However thats to big to start with, they should build up to that in the third movie, otherwise they blow their

I'd like to see them take on Atlantis lead by Prince Namor The Sub-Mariner like years ago.

My guess is that it will start out with them fighting the Hulk, a good character that everyone is familiar with and would take a lot to take down...then at the end they'll team up to fight Loki, who started the whole thing from behind the scenes.

Well, there's no Ant-Man yet, so Ultron's out. Kang would be a little silly, and Fox owns both Doctor Doom and the Hand. Both Red Skull and Loki would be redundant, seeing as they're villains in the solo films ...

Wow, I honestly have no idea.

Regardless, I still think they should be taking on the Hulk as their first team effort. Would be sweet!
