The 12th Doctor Who will be revealed live this Sunday on BBC America

Aug. 1, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Following months of speculation regarding the departure of current DOCTOR WHO star Matt Smith, The BBC is prepared to make an exciting "time-and-space shattering announcement" regarding the future of the long-running television series. That revelation will be the identity of the 12th Doctor who will replace Matt Smith on the next season of the hit British series.

The announcement will be aired live on a special called DOCTOR WHO LIVE: THE NEXT DOCTOR which will air this Sunday, August 4th at 2pm EST. This worldwide live broadcast will also be used for the 50th anniversary episode which will be simulcast live across the planet on November 23rd. In case you didn't know, DOCTOR WHO is kind of a big deal.

Producer and showrunner Steven Moffat offered this regarding the news:

The decision is made and the time has come to reveal whos taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.

DOCTOR WHO is current celebrating it's 50th anniversary which will feature a television movie about the first doctor titled AN ADVENTURE IN SPACE AND TIME starring David Bradley this Fall along with the anticipated special reuniting Matt Smith with prior incarnations of The Doctor, specifically David Tennant. John Hurt, who made a surprise cameo in the recent season finale, will also appear in the anniversary episode.

Several names have been bandied about for the 12th version of The Doctor with British oddsmakers currently making the top candidate Peter Capaldi who would be an awesome choice. Check out this classic compilation of Capaldi from the BBC series THE THICK OF IT and the film IN THE LOOP.

Moffat's ego is out of control at this point. It's ridiculous. Live unveiling? Jesus Christ. Remember when Bonnie Langford was embarrassing? No, *this* is embarrassing.

It doesn't matter who the next Doctor is if the next Doctor still "sounds" like Moffat. That's the main reason why Smith is so shit in the role.

Capaldi's a cool actor and would no doubt make for a fairly intense Doctor, but I don't reckon he'll take the role.

Unless you watch BBC and are actually familiar with their shows and casts, the person will most likely be an unknown to most people.

Should be an interesting reveal, but

Doubt it will be Capaldi... he's awesome, but he's been in the show before and Torchwood as well. His presence is a bit too strong there already.

Well, let's see. I'm just making an educated guess, so bare with me, but most of the target audience probably ranges between 15 and 25. I know, that's a ten year range but it's just common sense too. Now, I'm 28 and that's obviously out of that target audience. Now, I would have just been 3 days shy of being a wondrous 5 years old when the last season, 7th Doctor, would come to an end. I know I know, at five I should have still been able to watch the Doctor. BBC was very easy to come by

I know I know, at five I should have still been able to watch the Doctor. BBC was very easy to come by all across American through cable providers. Let's not forget the time slots it would have had.
I know where I was for at least 5 of those 30 years and I'm out of the target audience. Crazy. I don't know if you've caught on yet, but majority of these fans were non existent. Correct me if I'm wrong in the idea that this show was suppose to continue on with only the original target audience from 1963. I mean, that would make sense why the show was off air for a good 5 years and they decided to continue on in sequential order with a ninth Doctor. Continuing the show for the benefit of the first audience in '63. Right? The whole idea of mentioning story arcs from the past 25 years wasn't really to inform newer audiences, but to help the original viewers remember because of a deteriorating memory from old age. Or, was it because most of the viewers now was just a scratch on their fathers scrotum? Couldn't be that. That's just ludicrous to think they revamped a show after a lengthy hiatus for newer viewers to enjoy the adventures of the Doctor.

Seriously though. This has got to be the most profoundly dumb comment I've seen in regards to, well shit, anything in a very long time. I rarely comment on this site and I've been a lurker far longer than a member, but I seriously had to log on to this shit after numerous failed attempts because I've forgot my password. I hope you're just trolling and you've had a good laugh. I can enjoy and agree with that humor.

28 and "out of the target audience"?? Fuck that shit, I'm 43 and I love me some Dr Who. I don't even know what to say to either of you regarding your semi-moronic musings.

I'm 34 and started watch Doctor Who last year. I love Sci Fi and wasn't jumping on the bandwagon. Seen it on Netflix and decided to give it a try since a buddy of mine said it was awesome. I really didn't know it was as huge as it is and I certainly didn't start watching it because it's popular. I watched the older ones when I was a kid but don't really remember them.

15-25?! Nonsense. The target age of Doctor Who is anyone of any age.

So is that why my comic and general media shop didn't start getting covered in Whovian crap and memorabilia until about a year ago? Shit is trendy. It has a section right between Minecraft and One Direction. I'm sorry you legitimate fans have to be lumped in with the trendy crowd, it's just the nature of the beast.

And sorry BloodyNinjaFist, I didn't see any point within the first 5 sentences so I kinda just faded out to the last paragraph. I'm sure it was a very interesting article.

Speaking only for my own local comic shop, it was covered in "Whovian" (shit word) crap even during the years when DW was no longer on TV. It's always had quite a large section devoted to the series. Books, CDs, DVDs, VHS, posters, calendars, toys, all the usual stuff that comes with licensing out a property.

only watched a few episodes of this show but it's quite interesting. Wonder who they will get to replace the doctor. Probably a british actor who us yanks aren't familar with (unless we watch a lot of the BBC).
