The Big Chillin'

Jun. 13, 2007by: Mike Sampson

Sony's genre division Screen Gems is looking to remake the classic Lawrence Kasdan dramedy THE BIG CHILL. Except it won't be called THE BIG CHILL. And it will be modernized. And it will feature an all-black cast. But it will feature seven 30-somethings reuiniting for the funeral of a friend and start singing and copulating to old-school classics. The Motown era jams could very well be replaced with early G-funk hip-hop classics like "The Chronic," which would please me immensely. So far the only cast member signed on to star is Regina King (one of the best examples of a female "That Guy" actor) who will also produce. I hope producers resist the temptation to also cast Morris Chestnut. As you might expect, Kasdan has nothing to do with this remake.

Extra Tidbit: The corpse that is seen briefly in the original BIG CHILL was played by a pre-fame Kevin Costner.

Fuck Screen Gems.

I'm so sick and fucking tired of Screen Gems fucking up older Columbia movies like this and When A Stranger Calls.

What's next? Fright Night? I'll be REALLY pissed if SG decides to fuck that cult classic up with a remake.

gee whiz...

While I appreciate the effort to produce thoughtful, reflective, quality African American movies about NORMAL Black people --you know, the ones who go to work, get married, have kids, stress over bills, careers, and life in general-- I just can't understand why they can't just come up with NEW material. And there is no reason why a group of 30-something Black folks wouldn't relate to Motown music: their parents played it ad nauseum while they were growing up. Oh, I forgot, most Black people

And there is no reason why a group of 30-something Black folks wouldn't relate to Motown music: their parents played it ad nauseum while they were growing up. Oh, I forgot, most Black people don't HAVE married parents or were raised in happy homes. So of course they could only relate to gangsta rap, because that's the only music ALL Black people listen to. None of us have ever heard of Tears for Fears or went to a Cyndi Lauper or Wham concert back in the day. These 30-somethings would not have been raised in the early to late 80s, and the early 90s --the beginning for the gangsta era-- would not have been their college years...

Why not just have Lucas's ILM reprocess the original film and give everyone a blackface. Oh lets see how many "funny" stereotypes they're gonna fit into this little gem ?! Whos gonna direct it, John Singleton ? Maybe call it BOYZ N DA HOOD 2. Gimme a fuckin' break, enough is enough.

God, someone please shoot me now. Talk about a classic that has NO, absolutely NO reason to be besmirched by the remake-idiots.
