The Book of Mormon movie not nearly as imminent as you were lead to believe

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Earlier this month, Entertainment Weekly reported an “exclusive” that a movie based on the insanely popular musical “Book of Mormon” was “definitely” happening. This despite the fact the news was based on quotes from creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone that used words like “hopefully” and “we want.” “Hopefully” is a long way from “definitely” and Parker and Stone have chimed in on the confusion.

The two said last night that there are no immediate plans for a BOOK OF MORMON movie despite any reports to the contrary. Specifically Parker seemed to indicate they’re more than happy to let the Broadway “Mormon” stand on its own two feet for a while longer. “We did a stage show and it worked out way better than we ever thought, and we’d like it to be that for a while, you know, without contaminating it with a movie.”

He explained that the confusion came when the EW reporter asked if they’d “consider” doing a movie and when they answered they thought they “could” do a movie, it suddenly turned into a sure thing.

But it’s interesting that Parker would use the word “contaminate” to describe the effect of a BOOK OF MORMON movie. Parker and Stone were famously burnt out by the experience of making TEAM AMERICA while also working on “South Park” and perhaps the thought of making another movie isn’t as appealing as one might think. The good thing is that the duo have an incredible amount of creative control, an incredible amount of money and will only work on the movie if they really, really think it’ll work on its own terms.
