The Boondock Saints might open fire with a new TV series

Jun. 15, 2011by: Paul Tassi

I think these days I hear BOONDOCK SAINTS ragged on more than any movie that used to be a cult classic. It's now cool to hate on it, but I still stand by the original as a very entertaining film.

My view of it was a bit tainted with the release of the sequel, which did its absolute best to ineffectively copy the original in almost every way. Despite the obvious set up for a third film, I doubt one is coming, as it took ten years to even get the second released. But the Saints may continue marching on with a new TV series that director Troy Duffy is theorizing about.

“We’ve been approached to do a possible Boondock Saints TV series. So the fans may be getting a part 3 as a television show. We might be able to pull that off….I actually called both Sean and Norman and they both said “hell yeah, we’ll drop everything.”

A show with the original duo actually onboard? This went from a terrible idea to mildly interesting. In fact, I think a show might not be a decent concept, and is at the very least worth a shot. I could see a cable network like FX picking it up, as already you've got some level of a built in fanbase, making it less inherently risky than a new IP. Also, the format of a TV show would force the characters into new situations, and they couldn't repeat the failures of the sequel, which copied the original film to the point where it was almost a parody.

Yes, it could be a disaster, but I'd sure as hell watch the pilot. What about you?

Extra Tidbit: Why yes, that might in fact be the best picture ever taken.

"Almost" parody?

That sequel was one long joke. It was to the original Boondock Saints as Austin Powers is to James Bond- all the basic elements were there, but it was in no way serious or cool in the way the original was, despite the original's massive flaws. And yes, that shit-awful sequel tainted the original. Still, a t.v. shows sounds cool. I'd like to see it produced for STARZ or something so they can keep cursing and whatnot.

I love the original quite a bit but this is a bit much.

On a related note, I believe that the documentary "Overnight" about the ever so slight rise and fall of Saints writer/director Troy Duffy should be mandatory viewing for any film school student. Point? Stay humble, people.

Unless it's on Starz or HBO, this will never work. Why? Because network and cable networks don't take kindly to having your heroes being killers, so they'll pussify the characters. It's already happening to Sons of Anarchy.

I enjoyed the original for the first time recently, not so much the sequel, though I do appreciate the love these guys have for the characters.

I'd be open to a TV series, as long as it doesn't get in the way with Norman's role in The Walking Dead

I liked the original okay. I remember watching it and couldn't believe people wanted to see a sequel, because it seemed to tie itself up pretty well. In the world of vigilante revenge movies, it's average, with a particularly memorable performance from Defoe.

And while a sequel may not have proven the best idea, I can see this working. The original was basically a series of episodic murders, and if the show could keep it interesting it might do okay. I think some sort of serial is a better

Yeah the second wasn't a good movie but it shares many elements with my list of so bad its good movies. Boondock Saints 2 is up there with movies like Punisher War Zone, that I can watch just for the campiness and have fun.

With that said a tv series could be what we wanted from a sequel. I would certainly give it a shot being that I am a huge fan of the original. And yes that is a great photo.

How could you not like the second just a little with lines like this: "Who ordered the whup ass fajitas?" and "Ding dong mother f***er... ding dong!" Would be up of trial run of a TV series.

LOVED the first one. When the second came out I got brown out drunk with my friends and we didn't really pay much attention to it at all, but from what I gathered, it was a shit fest.
I'll be there for a TV series. I can see it being on FX as well.

Loved the hell out of the first one. Even the second film had its moments . I take this news with a grain of salt though. Not too long ago, Duffy was talking about a video game as well. And Duffy is a guy who likes to toot his own horn. I'm down with the concept of a TV show, as it is ripe for an awesome TV series. However, I wouldn't want Duffy writing or directing it. They'd have to find someone more experienced. I just don't see him maintaining the series even through the first season.

I'd be down...

I have had a keen infaturtion with The Saints since watching the first one over 8 years ago. The second was a fun revisit and I could totally see it as a series (FX too, they already have edgy shows like Justified and S.O.A.) I'm in agreement too that better writers would have to come in. Plus it'd be awesome to see the boys more often than once a decade.

P.S. In total agreement with the Tidbit.

Agreed - The documentary "Overnight" about Troy Duffy sabotaging his own film and career is much more entertaining than anything he could create.

A TV Series???

I'm sorry, but unless it's gonna be on HBO this is an incredibly bad idea. The Saints were never meant for regular tv. I loved the first film and enjoyed the second... but like you said it wasn't the greatest. Who in their right mind could hate the first one? The Pope maybe. or quite possibly some 12 year old retarded person with a stuttering problem.

Or anybody who saw it as a cluttered, sloppy derivative mess with laughable action sequences and depressingly cliche dialog. Or anyone who was old enough to see Pulp Fiction in the theaters first.

Since you only gave 2 choices, I felt compelled to offer 2 more.
