The Bourne connection: Joan Allen and Albert Finney return for Legacy

Jul. 26, 2011by: Dave Davis

Some of you have probably been wondering how THE BOURNE LEGACY can still be a Bourne movie without Matt Damon, the original Jason Bourne (or at least the recent owner of the codename).

One definition of "legacy" is: anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor. In this semi-sequel's case, that legacy won't just be the Bourne alias, but also previous BOURNE series actors Joan Allen and Albert Finney, who will be reprising their roles.

Allen will again play CIA agent Pam Landy, a foe-turned-ally of Damon's Bourne, while Finney will play the nefarious doctor behind the brainwashing program. Other story details are scarce, but LEGACY will presumably take place some time after the events of the original trilogy.

Jeremy Renner is the Damon replacement, playing an operative from a covert government program similar to the Treadstone project that created Bourne. Ed Norton will play the new movie's villain, Oscar Isaac (ROBIN HOOD, DRIVE) is another assassin from the project, and Rachel Weisz is the potential love interest.

Writer-director Tony Gilroy (MICHAEL CLAYTON) will deliver the globetrotting espionage thriller to theaters next Summer.

Extra Tidbit: Guilty pleasure: Finney's 1981 thriller LOOKER, an original script by Michael Crichton about a plastic surgeon investigating the murders of models after their likenesses are scanned into a computer for James Coburn's experimental mind control weapon, or something.

just a question, I don't see any sources here but maybe I just missed it, so Renner IS playing Bourne here? Every other article/press release I've read on Legacy has jumped around the topic and never really said who his character was or what his name would be.
Still, this is fucking retarded. I don't care if they can somehow find some LITTLE stupid way to get away with the title, some little excuse to fill the hole, it doesn't fly (Legacy - definition: ...) The picture sounds like it could

Still, this is fucking retarded. I don't care if they can somehow find some LITTLE stupid way to get away with the title, some little excuse to fill the hole, it doesn't fly (Legacy - definition: ...) The picture sounds like it could actually be pretty cool (mainly because of Norton being the villain) but calling it THE BOURNE LEGACY is just bullshit, it has nothing to do with Bourne (and Renner's character better not be called Bourne, it'd just be distracting, cheap and unrealistic - because an agency would totally give two secret agents the same codename?) besides being in the same universe, and from everything we know so far the story has nothing to do with Jason Bourne or his 'legacy' other than the fact that Pam Landy worked on his case once, which is a hairline connection, but still really nothing.
We all know the real reason it's called 'The Bourne Legacy' is ONLY because the studio wants the brand recognition and didn't want to lose the rights to the series while Damon and Greengrass do their own thing for a bit. No matter how they try to explain the title, it just seems stupid

@DD - in the initial version of the article it said something like 'he will be in the role of Bourne' or 'he will be in Damon's role' just a simple mistake, but it's all good -- I was just asking as I thought they had confirmed his character somewhere or something when I read that part.

While you don't exactly say that Renner's character is taking the Bourne name, you do say that the alias is being handed down, which infers as much. It would be less vague by replacing the word with "title", but then again, I'm not your editor. Speaking of which, I'm in need of employment, you're not looking for an editor, are you?

At any rate, the only way I see this movie reasonably keeping the Bourne name in it's title is if the Agency is using Renner to hunt down Bourne (still) while also

At any rate, the only way I see this movie reasonably keeping the Bourne name in it's title is if the Agency is using Renner to hunt down Bourne (still) while also needing to take down Ed Norton. I won't write this off right away, but I'm not exactly optimistic, either.

At no point did I claim that Renner was "playing" Bourne. I stated that the sequel was inheriting the alias and that Renner was "replacing" Damon as the main character. What you inferred was clearly something different. But I do think it's obvious the new movie will address or utilize the Bourne name/alias somehow.

Agree with WP-DFA

So is Renner another assassin who's had his memory wiped and needs to re-discover his identity? If so, it seems boring to do the same thing over again. If not, than this is just a standard spy movie and doesn't need to be associated with Bourne (except for the obvious marketing reasons). Either way, I'm still against this film.

It's Pamela Landy*

And I'm gonna keep an open mind to this project. Renner is solid, but might have two "spy" franchises to hold up with Ghost Protocol and now Legacy. And I don't see this being better than Supremacy (my favorite in the series).

Wow, too much speculative hate for this project. I really like the idea of seeing the follow through... the long-term impact of Bourne's actions in the trilogy. The cast is spectacular, Tony Gilroy has creative control, and it categorically does not feel like a money grab. Sure it might suck, but this project already has strong roots.

Is there a deeper reason for why Matt didn't want to return besides the fact that it's a different director?

Cannot wait to see Renner go head to head against a villanious Norton.

UGH

Geez, why are people being so slow witted about this flick? It's not complicated...Renner is not Bourne. Just a new character with a new story existing within the framework created by the previous trilogy. Don't understand peoples problem with it. The trilogy was perfect but Bournes character had a perfect arc and wouldnt want to see them play it out any further. He's not Bond. BUT! Another character playing in the same sandbox? Im there!!! PS. No, Renner won't have amnesia :/

Crazy how Renner's career is taking off so fast and he's 40 years old. They must have a good script because this movie seems highly unnecessary.
