The Bourne Legacy is a Jason Bourne film without Jason Bourne

Last week, we passed along word that Tony Gilroy had signed to write and direct THE BOURNE LEGACY, the fourth film in the BOURNE franchise. At the time, it was reported that Gilroy and Universal were moving forward with the film “with or without” Matt Damon who had earlier intimated he wouldn’t do another film without Paul Greengrass. Well, Gilroy would like to clear a few things up. Not only is he doing it without Matt Damon, he’s doing it without Jason Bourne.

Thewhotothewhatnow? Now exactly do you have a Jason Bourne film without the character of Jason Bourne? Gilroy explains, “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project.”

Sooo why not just call it SPY HUNTER JONES or something? Why tie it to the BOURNE franchise, where people are going to naturally expect to see that character, if Jason Bourne isn’t even involved?

Oh but he IS involved! “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens.”

I like Gilroy and I think he’s a really talented director and would love to see what he could do with a BOURNE film but frankly? This concept frankly bores me. I don’t know that I’m all that interested in a world where Jason Bourne’s presence is felt but only as some “Hey, remember that time Jason Bourne did that thing with that guy? Wasn’t that awesome?!” remembrance. What do you think? Can Gilroy pull it off?
