Strike Back below!
by: Mike Sampson Mar. 8, 2010

THE HURT LOCKER was the big winner last night at the Oscars with six total wins including Best Picture and Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow. AVATAR, which went into Sunday as the biggest competitor to HURT LOCKER, won three Oscars. It was a night mostly devoid of surprises, at least in the major categories. All the favored winners won including Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock as Best Actor and Best Actress and Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique for Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress respectfully.

Take a look at the full list of the winners below and talk about who won, who should've won and all the rest of the Oscar fun in the Strike Backs below!

I'm glad that The Hurt Locker won best picture! While Avatar was a monster gross at the Box Office, and the Hurt Locker wasn't, it was a movie that had substance, over style......SUCK IT CAMERON! BIGELOW FTW!!!

Well this is no surprise. The judges after all are partly the same dumb morons that help put out some of the worst movies this year. Its no small surprise they should misjudge things so easily.

I'm shocked by the number of people who thought 2009 was a weak year for movies. You obviously didn't see many of them.

Mostly good, Some awful
Not only was the Horror tribute introduced by Twilight kids, but there was a clip from Twilight in the tribute! It's bull shit! And, even worse, Avatar for Best Cinematography??? The Academy has clearly forgotten the definition of Cinematography.

Totally agreed. When Avatar won for Cinematography and Art Direction, I expected them to bring a computer on stage to accept the award. Such an insult to those who actually do real work in those fields.

Not only did it not win but the much deserving runner up "White Ribbon" also lost. I felt that the winner "EL SECRETO DE SUS OJOS" was utter and completely an act of politics. The speech's said by the director and producers at the podium felt so contrived one could wonder if they already knew that they'd won before it was announced. I just find it hard to fathom how prison movies never win awards hence "Shawshank Redemption". Speaking of prison movies how and why didn't "Bronson" get at least a nomination in the Foreign Language category.

In way could politics have helped "El Secreto de sus Ojos"? Have you seen the movie? It's outstanding, a great story, perfect performances and the best sequence shot since "Children of Men"

F*ck the best documentary category. "Under Our Skin" wasn't even nominated. We who have Lyme work our asses off to get people to recognize an epidemic that affects all of us. But we have a corrupt medical system. Illness is big business. F*ck that. Life is a dick.

Avatar was pretty much condescending towards everyone. Like implying the Native-Americans could have stopped the Whites if only they had a White to lead them. And it was an obvious parallel to western expansion. I've just decided... F*ck Avatar.

Worst Oscars Ever....
Unfunny, and somehow managed to be more boring than usual, even without the musical performances (but a fucking dance sequence instead). Just bad... High point for me, seeing Up in the Air lose (overrated movie). Low Point, seeing Inglourious Basterds lose Best Original Screenplay.

I really wanted Gabby Sibide (SP?) to win best actress, because it was one of those 'once in a lifetime' roles and I don't know if she'll ever get a role like that again.

Ben Stiller should be denied entry to any awards ceremony ever again. God that was excruciating. I wish I'd put money on THL sweeping the boards. It was an average movie at best but it was making a political statement which of course guarantees an Oscar every time. I like that they honored movie scores and not dumb ass movie songs and they need to do away with how they present the best actors, by that time you just want to get the damn show over with already.. They have this big epic thing for actors and waste so much time then...

Almost every win was well-deserved, although I'm still not sure what to think of Bullock taking the big prize. The Cove's triumph is an immense leap towards finally ending a bloody and obsolete "tradition" that should've died decades ago. Avatar vs THL was an exciting showdown in many ways: indie vs studio juggernaut, ex-wife vs ex-husband, woman vs man, a tiny film about the real world against the biggest fantasy spectacle ever made. David vs Goliath, if you will. THL became the little movie that could, and will be remembered as such for a long time to come.

It was a good show aside from the fact that Gabby Sidibe was robbed. Just proves that alot of this is a popularity contest. I have never been a fan of Sandra and found her performance decent in a mediocre football movie for girls. Seeing The Cove win was definitely a highlight along with Jeff Bridges awesome attitude and Hurt Locker being a big winner.

Glad to see that see Bigelow kicked Jimmy in the nuts. Hard. Avatar was a great ride, but more in a roller-coaster way. As a film, it was far from great, and it's cool that the Oscars reflected this.

Pretty average but this was a pretty average year for movies. I mean I caught The Hurt Locker awhile back and thought it was only ok. Didn't really see any reason for all the love but I'm glad Avatar didn't take Best Picture and Director. I would've liked to see Tarantino get a little love from the Academy but I guess at least Inglourious Basterds was nominated.

Good show
It was really fun to watch, Martin and Baldwin did a good job and NPH music numer was great too!

And I think all the winners deserve their award! I am really happy for Kathryn Bigelow and The Hurt Locker and I also like that Sandra Bullock gets the award (her speech was really funny).

So, it was a very entertaining evening!

Pretty Damn Good
The Academy didn't have its head buried in the sand (or some where else ...) for a change. I feel pretty good about the major awards, and the smaller ones for the most part agreed with who I would have picked. Good job all around.

First time I'm happy with almost all wins
I can't believe that I agree with all the choices this time around. That NEVER happens. I also am happy for Bigelow; she deserves it. My only questionable disagreement is with Bullock, but I haven't seen THE BLIND SIDE so I can't rightly say.

yaaaaa, real movies win for now
Avatar got rewarded for technical innovation, but best picture needs more depth than a disney cliche cartoon script. the so called 'conservation' message is completely lost in the flashiness. if the navi looked like the klingons or worse, the ferengi would you have identified with them more or less? the reality is that 'avatar' got what it deserved, technical acheivement accolades. although...

Hurt locker was justly rewarded, my secret wish wass for inglorious basterds to take best picture, but we all know that would never have happened.

It was a so-so night with some pretty bad screw-ups. Tarantino should have easily taken Best Original Screenplay and Reitman & Turner should have won Best Adapted Screenplay for Up in the Air (which somehow ended up with nothing). The wins there for Hurt Locker and Precious came completely out of nowhere. Hurt Locker has been one of the most overrated films of the year (behind Paranormal Activity and Avatar). It's alright, but not nearly as great as some people are making it out to be.

I was rooting for Tarantino and Basterds to take Best Director and Picture, but it never looked like it was going to happen, so no surprise that it didn't. Still a terrible error on the Academy's part to give IB only ONE award.

Martin and Baldwin were pretty funny up front, but then seemed to disappear for most of the show aside from some bits that looked previously taped.

Hopefully, in the future they'll scrap having colleagues address each acting nominee directly. They actually did cut it down from all four categories to just the main two, but it still takes way too long. That's where the ceremony was the most dull, and all it did was make it longer.

In the end, this was a pretty forgettable Oscar night. It was nice to finally have a woman win Best Director. I just wish it had been for a more memorable film.

IMO i found THL to be pretty damn neutral, not once did I think of they were trying to glorify war, or try and tell me wether this war is justifiable or not. To me, it was a thriller in which politics took the back seat and character development and suspense drove it home.

Tarantina had no chance going against the first woman or first african american, that was way too obvious. I just got that feeling right off the bat. But I agree about hurt locker being overrated. It was a political statement supporting our troops, nothing more.

Good show, and I actually thought Martin and Baldwin did a great job hosting this year (especially the Snuggie bit).

I liked the snipe from the Foreign Film winner about Avatar - burn! James Cameron was probably fuming quietly in his seat. Avatar got the awards it was due, no question.

I really liked the presentations this year. The way they showed the script on screen during the scene for the Best Screenplay awards. The guests introducing the best actors and actresses were a nice touch too. I would have like Steve Martin to have hosted alone, but none the less, it was a good show, and quite a few surprises.

I enjoyed the Oscars tonight but Steve Martin hasn't been funny in a decade.. can we get a better host next year?

Big wins for Waltz and Bigelow.. it was pretty great to see history tonight.

and I haven't heard anybody talk about it yet but how about that dance rendition for the best theme? That was fantastic!

I would have preferred a BP/BD split, with Avatar taking home Best Picture. Still, congrats to THL and Bigelow.

Also really glad Bridges and Waltz won, two Oscars well deserved. Even Bullock and Monique.

No real surprises for me actually including Best Picture, guess I need to see Hurt Locker now. Maybe tarantino not winning for his screenplay surprised me a little, but congrats to Sandra Bullock, screw the haters, & damn Kathryn Bigelow is hot!

I think the wins for The Hurt Locker were surprising , specially in the technical categories. You'd think a 300 million dollar movie would have those in the pocket.

Really glad to see "El Secreto de sus Ojos" win the Foreign Oscar. It's an amazing film that I recommend 100%.

The hosts were ok. Having a duo makes the script feel more natural, but Baldwin isn't half as funny as Martin
