The Curse of La Llorona trailer breathes chilling life into terrifying tale

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Ghost stories and haunting folklores are becoming bigger and bigger business at the box office, in large part thanks to THE CONJURING movies. While we here in America have plenty of classic, spooky tales, the story of La Llorona, The Weeping Woman, is perhaps one of the most popular stories you’ve never heard of. A popular, terrifying piece of Mexican folklore, producers James Wan, Gary Dauberman and Emile Gladstone, along with director Michael Chaves (in his feature directorial debut) are bringing the tale to audiences with THE CURE OF LA LLORONA, and the first trailer is here to offer up yet another pale-faced, gown-clad ghost woman to terrify us. Move over, THE NUN!

This certainly looks creepy, and the preview here offers up a few nail-biting jump scares. Chaves was able to land the gig directing THE CONJURING 3 with his work here, so whatever he did clearly is working for the folks at Warner Bros. This is just the latest horror entry from WB and New Line, with movies like ANNABELLE, THE CONJURING, IT and, most recently, THE NUN, all becoming $100+ million smash hits. Should this movie be marketed well they could have yet another title to add to the pile.

Here is the synopsis:

La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations. In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain. Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious…and her methods more terrifying.

In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope to survive La Llorona’s deadly wrath may be a disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay, on the fringes where fear and faith collide.

Beware of her chilling wail…she will stop at nothing to lure you into the gloom. Because there is no peace for her anguish. There is no mercy for her soul. And there is no escape from the curse of La Llorona.
