The Dark Knight Rises star Christian Bale visits Aurora shooting victims of his own accord

Jul. 24, 2012by: Paul Shirey

It wasn't too long ago that people everywhere were calling Christian Bale's character into question after he lost his temper with the director of photography on TERMINATOR: SALVATION.  The passionate actor, well known for his intensity, is now showing his compassionate side by visiting the victims of the Aurora, Colorado shooting in a move that is not perpetuated by the studio, but of the actor's own volition.

"Mr. Bale is there as himself, not representing Warner Brothers," a representative for the studio has said. Bale previously released a statement about the horrific event, saying, "Words cannot express the horror that I feel. I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.”

Bale arrived at the hospital around 2 p.m., meeting with seven of the victims.   Bill Voloch, interim president of Medical Center of Aurora said that Bale spent 2 and a half hours at the hospital, talking with the victims and staff, posing for pictures, and pretty much being a stand up human being all around.

"The patients were really happy to meet Bale," Voloch said. "They are obviously big fans of his movies. They wanted to see Batman and were really pleased to see Bale." he said.  "It was good for the patients.  We hope it was therapeutic for them, and all the staff really appreciated him coming."

The fact that Bale is there on his own, as himself, speaks volumes about the man and he's absolutely earned my respect, no matter how many DP's he blows up on.

Check out the photos below, which have trickled in via Twitter and Facebook (i.e. no high res publicity shots). The man in the first photo is Carey Rottman, who was shot in the leg during the attack.  Rottman updated his Facebook status after the shooting with: "Shot in the leg at Batman. Where is he when you need him. Please pray for everyone there."

In the face of this tragic event, it's things like this that help people heal and restore hope to humanity.  We often get quite cynical about Hollywood and people in general, but sometimes, as Bale/Batman put it in The Dark Knight, our faith is rewarded.

Extra Tidbit: I've got nothin'. This is just a truly great thing.

good guy

& i never though that meltdown he had was such a bad thing as people made it out to be, as with gibson.
i understand most people have similar type of moments during their lifetime, & its not right to write someone off based on one of these moments.

Very classy move in my opinion. I had a bit of a rant on twitter yesterday re this as some 'journalist' in one of the UK papers was having a dig at Bale. Seemingly he was proving just how much of a misery he was by shunning fans and the media at the Dark Knight Rises premiere. Just goes to show that there's just no pleasing some folks.

I've always really liked Mr. Bale. I think some people have unfairly judged him for his on set "incident". Sometimes people forget that celebrities are human beings. I'll be damned if I haven't had bad days myself where I potentially wouldn't have done the same thing. The fact of the matter is that he is a hell of an actor, who is dedicated wholeheartedly to his work. But then he goes and does this and shows that he truly is a remarkable human being as well. It's wonderful to see.

This really and truly warmed my heart yesterday. People do some amazing and heroic things everyday. For an act of compassion, love, and friendliness like this to be displayed can restore anybody's faith in humanity. Out of the darkness comes light. I can only imagine the overwhelming feeling of joy and awe these victims felt when they saw him walking through their door to pay them a visit. What a guy.

Good for him

I read another news story about a Facebook campaign to get Christian Bale to show up at the hospital dressed as Batman and people were wondering if that would further traumatize the patients. My thought was, "Why doesn't Christian Bale just show up as himself?"

Guess he was two steps ahead of me. LOL

And yes, the Westboro Baptists suck.

Good man

Who cares if he came on his own accord or his PR guy pushed him to it? Honestly, the movie itself had no bearing on the tragedy that befell, but WB and Bale have already gone above and beyond in dealing with this tragedy. All in all, I'm sure his visit alleviated the trauma and grief these people went through, and that's all that matters.

@Bob Loblaw Sir, that is just way too cynical. You don't expect people to take photos of a celebrity and post them online when they see one? People post their breakfast on facebook for goodness sakes. Does this then mean that Bale has to keep his appearance a huge secret in order for what he's doing to qualify as kindness? I say that no matter what his motivation, he did a kind thing. I don't feel it's cynically motivated at all, and the fact that the story has been picked up by others does not

Seriously, Bob, people like you that come up with these ridiculous accusations for what motivates people to do the things they do. Perhaps, I don't know, Bale wanted to come on his own--clearly. Would you have preferred if he snuck through the window with a ski mask on and the Batman voice?

class

the whole Terminator thing was bullshit. Bale is a method actor, like others, so like having a 12 year old kill you and bitch you out in Call Of Duty he is more irritable. That situation never even got to me. Shit...I have gotten more upset than him. It is nice what he did, he seems to be passionate about people. This is a good, classy, thing he did.

Good on him - I read someone suggesting it, and I thought that Bale really had no obligation to do so, but he has gone out of his way to perform an act of charity that can only make the victims feel better. I'm glad to see how much he cheered them up! You go Mr Bale.

Ok So not I take it back...

I was pretty upset that he was there because I thought he was doing it for money, and thought that was hugely messed up. But now that I read that he did this on his own time, and to just help people not for 15mins but for 2hrs. 2hrs of his own time, that's a really good human and person right there. Bale was always an awesome guy I always held high respect for him. This really touched my heart. :) very tragic, but in tragic things people always try to come together. Thats what everyone needs to

So why make a media event out of this? Oh yeah, he's on an image reinvention campaign. That visit would be pointless if he didn't make sure everyone saw him doing this. It's just politics set up by his agent.

Whether you believe it to be a "PR" move or not, that doesn't take away from the fact that he took time out of his life to visit people he didn't know to lift their "spirits". It was still a nice thing for him to do.

I don't think Bale is one of those celebrities who likes to put himself out in the limelight. In very many interviews, he seems awkward and uncomfortable even when discussing his films or characters, let alone personal issues. So, when he does something like this, I feel that it's a personal thing he felt he had to do rather than a calculated attention-grabbing stunt.

Nobody made a media event out of it. Bale actually asked that the Press not be notified that he was going and they weren't. But once the victims started tweeting pics of themselves with Bale, the cat was out of the bag...

This is what a down to earth, compassionate, empathic full blooded person does. Its so refreshing to see the increasingly corporate, mechanical Hollywood STILL has one or two actual human beings up its sleeve. Makes you want to believe in that once glorious Dream World some more. A BIG THUMBS UP for my favorite Mr. Bale.

Inspiring

Most people get the wrong impression regarding Christian Bale. His passion for acting is often misinterpreted for being a fiery and intense actor on-set.

The fact that he came to visit the Aurora victims of his own accord without any PR representatives or backing from any studio shows how much of a loving person this man is. This just brings a huge smile to my face and clears all negative feelings accumulated during this horrible weekend.

great thing he did

but a horrible lead up to him visiting. I mean enough with this fucking peer pressure bullshit with celebrities people. If celebs want to do something like this on their own accord then fine, let them do it -- who knows maybe Bale would've done something like this anyway but the fact of the matter is there were fucking petitions and facebook groups started trying to get Bale to come down. That shit just needs to end.

@slimbo - I wasn't looking for anything negative, these petitions and facebook groups were started shortly after the shooting and were publicized shortly after. It's nothing against Bale at all, like I stated it's a great move by him, but I just wish that people would stop basically forcing celebs to do shit like this, because it's just really unfair and backs them into a corner. People make these demands or 'requests' public and then if the celebs don't answer to it they look bad. Again a ton

It just needs to stop.

I doubt Christian Bale is looking himself up on facebook to see what people are saying he should do, especially this week. As it says, he did this on his own accord with no PR team. If he wanted to make himself look good and that he was answering people's facebook demands, then I'm sure he would have wanted some PR.

Again, way to find a negative in something positive.

@slimbo - dude really? When did I ever say that he was looking shit up on facebook or that that was the reason why he did this? I never said that. I thought I was being pretty damn clear in my response, but apparently not crystal enough.

I'm not finding anything negative in something positive because the negative (the petitions) came before the positive (this visit). Once again, I think it was great of Bale to do this and never said he was doing it just BECAUSE of the petitions. I'm saying

And you're a walking contradiction. You said there was facebook groups and peer pressure to make him do this and its bullshit because he'll look bad if he doesn't show. Now you're trying to say that he never looked at any of these groups or listened to this peer pressure. ?????????????

@slimbo - do you not understand that these groups were started before this event? I mean it's that simple, the negative came before the positive, so there's no way you could find the negative within the positive.

and no, stop putting words in my mouth. I said these groups are out there putting public pressure on the subject/celebrity. I already made it clear that I never said that that was the reason he did this OR that he didn't know anything about these groups. I said that we don't know,

I said maybe these petitions had some effect on this, maybe it didn't -- and that's that. Once again I'm repeating myself but once again I said we don't know how it actually happened, I simply said it would've been better if these groups didn't think it was a good idea to attempt to pressure celebs (again whether it worked or whether it went unnoticed) and instead let celebrities step up to the plate on their own. Just to make it clear for you on that last sentence I never said that he didn't step up to the plate on his own.

And as for the free country thing... you're calling my the walking contradiction? Seriously dude, do you not see the irony in that... if they can try to pressure celebs into doing something like that because it's a free country (even though it's the internet, not a country) then I certainly can go and publicly call that a stupid, selfish act. Because hey, it's a free country!

I'm done here though, I've wasted enough time on this. If you disagree with my stance fine, that's cool -- but lets leave it at that and be done already.
8:33PM on 07/24/2012
If you find it so negative (which it's not) then go bitch about it on the comment boards for the petition rather than bringing it up and bitch about it on a positive article, Debbie Downer.

I like how this guy has backtracked on everything he's said. "I'm not being negative, the people who petitioned for this are the negative ones; I never said he was pressured into this" (when he clearly did suggest that he was pressured.) He even changed his rating from red to green.

@bojac - no no I wouldn't have had a problem with him not doing it at all. It wasn't something he needed to do, again I'm a big fan of Bale and always had been before all of this, before he was ever Batman and all of that. As I stated a few times I think this is a great act by him, my problem is not with him but with the whole trend of 'asking' celebrities to do things with petitions, groups, etc. online

@slimbo - learn how to read and learn how to quote things that were actually said. I

Anyways, I can't believe you're seriously still going on with this? Just be done with it and move on lol, I'm only typing this because I wanted to answer bojac's post. I mean really, you smell a troll around here? Yeah, me too. Take a shower. This is my last post towards you so please continue to waste all your time on this thread, thinking about me and my post and trying to make me look like a bad guy, continue to make up things I said and then pretend to quote them like that's what I said and skewer my words. Don't stop believin pal and don't give up the war -- even though you're the only one in it. Best of luck to you.

Class act, Mr. Bale. This is something celebrities should do. Now I know Bale cares about his fans.
