The Dark Knight Rises will feature over an hour of IMAX footage, plus new trailer in front of The Avengers!

Apr. 23, 2012by: George Merchan

While THE AVENGERS is the current talk of the town as its release fast approaches and press have finally had a chance to see it (and the word is that it's great), Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT RISES appears to be gearing up for a superhero marketing blitz of its own.

First of up, Chris Nolan has been out and about and talking to the press indirectly about his Bat trilogy capper (and more specifically, the craft of filmmaking itself). Last week the director gave an in-depth talk about how he approaches making films, as well as why IMAX is the shit and 3D is not. Now today, as Nolan spoke with the Wall Street Journal about the IMAX format, it's been revealed that the THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will feature over an hour of IMAX footage. Wow!

"When Mr. Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises' opens July 20, it will contain the most IMAX footage ever for a Hollywood feature, more than one hour's worth. There were 40 minutes of such footage in 2008's 'The Dark Knight'which set box-office records in its opening weekend."

Nolan adds a little something to the IMAX naysayers, too:

"There was a huge irony that we were told it would be too difficult to shoot a Hollywood movie on IMAX when we had this gigantic camera department, grips, electric, hundreds of people working for us," says the director, whose agreement to direct 'The Dark Knight' was contingent on Warner Bros. allowing him to shoot the film in IMAX. "These were cameras that had been to the top of Mount Everest, to the bottom of the ocean and into outer space, but people thought we couldn't make a feature film. It was absurd."

Meanwhile, Nolan Fans is reporting that the next full trailer for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will be attached to THE AVENGERS (you can check out a screenshot of the exhibitor brief RIGHT HERE). And really, that's a no-brainer for Warner Bros, who I'm expecting to really start bringing out the big guns after the release of Marvel's superhero extravaganza.
Extra Tidbit: Is watching a film like THE DARK KNIGHT RISES in IMAX a priority for you, or are you indifferent?

I saw Batman Begins and Dark Knight in IMAX, and I will complete the trilogy the same way. It was some of the best times I ever had seeing a movie. What are the chances of this beating Avatar for top box office ever. I hope it does.

just a question...

why would they put a TDKR trailer before The Avengers? Isn't it a totally different studio? I thought they promoted movies/put trailers before their movie of movies that were coming out from the same studio as the movie about to be shown? This is kind of just like... promoting the competition. I mean it doesn't matter that much because they're not going head to head or anything but just seemed weird... or is that not normally how it happens with trailers before the movie?

the very reason that businesses shell out millions for a super bowl spot - exposure. they know millions of people will be seeing Avengers and want to expose it to as many people as possible. makes perfect business sense to me. plus, i think companies do this all the time with their big tentpole films.

The Avengers may turn out to be the only film you can enjoy after a TDKR trailer.

Sherlock Holmes 2 was pretty good, IMO. But yeah, I hate it when they stick long-awaited trailers to clearly crappy movies, in order to sucker more people to buy tickets.

IMAX

Definitely seeing this in IMAX. It's the way it's meant to be seen. I'm not the biggest fan of 3D, but I made certain I saw Hugo in 3D because that's the way it was shot and meant to be seen, and this is no different.

IMAX it is. I mean, if it's shot (mostly) on the format I have to see it like that.

Making an eight hour pilgrimage to Denver for the opening day IMAX action for two different shows. Then making the drive back the following morning after gobbling dinner at Texas de Brazil. Never spent this much to see a movie. Worth it, I'm sure.

Extra tidbit: It's a priority. Watching a movie on IMAX screen gives the movie a sense of gigantic proportion and epicness. I remember watching The Matrix Revolution and Spider-Man 3 on IMAX. They were freakin' awesome. I'm willing to pay more to watch IMAX than 3D movie.

I'll watch it once on an IMAX screen. Then I'll watch it on a regular screen. Then I'll go for IMAX again. Then maybe on a regular screen 3-4 times. Then IMAX. I took 7 trips to the cinema to watch TDK. If this movie is as epic as I want it to be, I'm guessing I'll be taking about 5-6 trips extra this time around.

I would love to see it in IMAX, but I would love to see it at a midnight screening more and the nearest IMAX is just too far away for that type of late night viewing

Seeing Mission Impossible and the DKR prologue in IMAX was like seeing blu-ray for the first time after watching VHS your whole life.

So, priority, definitely.

I wonder how expensive it must cost to shoot an entire film on IMAX. Looks like we'll be getting our money's worth. :)

The fact that I would have to drive at least an hour to see it in IMAX I am extremely indifferent to it.
