The Dark Shadows trailer and one-sheet have finally arrived!

Mar. 15, 2012by: Paul Shirey

The wait is finally over as the first trailer and poster for Tim Burton's DARK SHADOWS has arrived in all it's gothic splendor.  Many have questioned what the tone of the film will be and this trailer lays that out pretty well if the music and interactions are any indication.  I would label this a "gothic comedy."

Take a look:

I wasn't a big follower of the original TV show, so there isn't much for me to compare this to, but I must say, I like what I see.  I don't know what, if anything, anyone was expecting from this, so it's hard to say whether this lives up to expectations or not.  For me, I'm game.  This looks like fun.

And with not a moment to spare, DARK SHADOWS is raising from the dead on May 11th, 2012, just in time for you to take a break from your Avengers-induced coma.

Knowing nothing about the original show...

I'm pleasantly surprised and I think it looks really funny. Back to the Beetlejuice days of Burton.

I've been a fan of the original show since I was a kid. And I've always been a fan of Tim Burton. But after watching this trailer I am crushed with disappointment. The show was never a comedy.

I know NOTHING about the original show and could care less. When watching a film, I watch the movie on its own merits, I don't compare it to the book or the show or whatever. I don't get that line of thinking at all.

I'm happy to see Burton/Depp try something a little different here. YES, it's got Burton's "style" all over it, but everybody digs his style, so I'm cool with that. The humor though, I wasn't expecting, but I dig it! There are only so many variations of SLEEPY HOLLOW that I want

So are you saying that the new generation can't handle dark and serious and that the only way to make this show appealing is to make it a comedy? I'm 21 years old so does that mean I shouldn't be a fan of any show made before 1990? HercZanzibar got it right, reruns on the SyFy channel.

The reruns played well into the 00s, mostly on SyFy. It was a sick day favorite of mine, I'm assuming that's also where most people here are getting their perspectives from :)

Are we all talking about the TV series from 1966?? I bet you there are less than 1% of our audience on JOBLO that was even alive when that series was on. The new target audience is not those people in their 50s, but the new generation. Anyhoo, to each his own like I always say, but it looks interesting to me!

Okay....imagine they made a "Pulp Fiction" t.v. series and took out all the grit and violence that was so great in the film. How would you react if some younger kid said "Hell, I've never seen that movie it's based on... but this new series looks like good drama!" yeah... bet you would have something to say about that.

I dig his style more than most but I don't like the change in tone. That's like making a movie adaption of Lost and making it a comedy or any other serious show. Those who haven't seen the show don't care, if you like the show then you would. That's where that line of thinking comes from. Ever since Tim Burton announced he was making this he said he and Depp were big fans of the show so this change in tone completely threw me off. I thought he would of made it more like Sweeney Todd.

respect your opinion, but i don't see what's so 'different' about taking an old show that wasn't a comedy and making it a comedy. that's all ANYONE does anymore. and calling it 'dark shadows' when it's the complete tonal opposite just exploits fans of the original show, trying to get them to see it on name recognition. bait and switch.

Were people expecting Sleepy Hallow or Sweeney Todd? This is coming out at the beginning of the Summer! I'm far too young to even know anything about the original show, but this looks pretty good. A lot of sexual undertones, right up Burton's alley.

The show frankly sucks. I'm glad this is getting a humorous touch. It definitely has a Beetlejuice/Adams Family vibe going on and I dig it. Depp looks awesome as always.

So Disappointed!

While it looks like a cute comedy, I thought it was about the actual soap opera series. I've watched about 100 episodes of the original and this movie is nothing like it. Would of liked a more serious dark drama instead of dated 70's cliches. I just won't go in expecting too much.

I love how we have been reading for months on here about this dark movie with all these great actors and involving vampires, witches, dark manors and hearing words like "dark", "gothic" and "drama". And then we get this Dumb ass trailer for of all things a shitty looking comedy. What a slap in the face.

I've heard early reviews...

And this trailer definitely makes the movie seem more comedic than it apparently is. The reviews said it's twisted and dark and while there is some funny stuff, it's not what this trailer is intending.

Untill "1972", this looked like the Tim Burton movie I've been waiting for since Sleepy Hollow. After that, well, not so much.

But we'll see. I mean, I will.

I completely agree - I liked what I saw during the first 35 seconds then the music started and it all fell flat to me. Interesting what Elder just said below though.

I have not seen a single nano-second of the original show, and as such, was expecting something. I am not entirely certain what that something was, but it was most assuredly not this crap. The jokes were obvious, and nothing felt 'dark' or 'shadowy'. Also, is it just me or would it be nice to see Burton try something without his usual schtick? His two best films have that stuff at a minimum ("Big Fish" & "Ed Wood" respectively).

NOOOO

I'm really not one to judge movies before they come. I hate when people do it. Because, how can one pass judgement before they have even seen them, right? ...BUT...WHAT THE F**K was that trailer all about??????

Well at least it takes place in the 70s and not present day. That would have been much worst haha.

The only good thing, judging from what I just saw, was that Depp doesn't look as bad as I thought he would as Barnabas.

This was not the movie I was expecting at all, I'm going to try and remain optomistic but geez this doesn't look good and the entire tone of the show is missing.Depp's Barnabus voice aint so bad and Eva Green looks pretty sexamatastic so there's that....I guess.

I clicked on that wanting to hate it, expecting another indulgent, out of touch Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie...but that looked good. Reminded me more of Burton's early movies like Beetlejuice & Edward Scissorhands, where he had to FIND kooky & weird things to take pictures of, not just crank them out of the CGI shop. And yeah...I wouldn't mind being buried with Eva Green's undies for a couple centuries.

You may strategically place your wonderful lips upon my posterior, and kiss it repeatedly!

I Admit, this trailer made me laugh out loud. I wasn't very interested in this movie previously with the paint-by number Burton touch and Johnny Depp in weird makeup for the millionth time, but this just made me excited about the film for the very first time. Also, any Eva Green is always a plus for me!

By the way, I didn't even know there was a tv series existed (shoot me) before reading all the comments....So don't really give a shit if that was a thriller or not. I like this trailer, and

I suspect if the Internet was as prominent back then the trailer for that may have disappointed those with expectations. I will give it a shot when its out.

To all the naysayers that are complaining that this looks nothing like the original -- what would you prefer, a movie with cheesy sets, soap opera dialog (that is when the actors could even remember their lines), and poor acting? The trailer looks good. The only thing I see missing in the trailer is the Danny Elfman score -- I think it's the inclusion of the 70's music that is turning a lot of people off to this. I for one am still excited to see this.
Peace out.

It's 2012, obviously they're not going to have cheesy sets and soap opera dialog. What people are complaining about is the change in tone from dark to comedy. Everything else looks great.

I wasn't hoping for the "original," but I was hoping for something dark. Something more in the tone of Sweeny Todd. The tone of this trailer lies somewhere between Burton's Alice and Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, neither which I enjoyed. So, not excited.

*watched it again, still can't decide, it's damn infuriating.

Yes please

Did Burton find his magic again? This looks almost as fun as Beetlejuice. I'm in all the way.

So, if I understand correctly...

... either he has sex with Eva Green for eternity or his family is cursed? They would give me that "dilemma" they wouldn't even have enough footage to make a tv commercial, let alone a movie!

I'm not all that familiar with the TV show, but this looks like it could be fun.

Definitely the most appealing movie of his to come out in a while. Loving the 70's setting.

I'm not familiar with the material at all, but this looks like a return to form for Burton- kind of an Adam's Family meets Beetlejuice or something.

This does NOT have the same tone as the source material...

I'm a longtime fan of Dark Shadows, and this trailer just goes to show that Hollywood can destroy any franchise in the blink of an eye. It seems that all Burton did here was to combine Beetlejuice with the characters of D.S. and made some unholy bastard-child of a movie. No way I'm seeing this.

I love Tims older work. Favorite being Edward Scissorhands. When I knew about this movie, I knew that it wasn't going to please fans of DS. Look at any modern film adaptation of an old show, is it ever the same?
What I was wanting was a more serious film. Instead this film looks more like a family fun comedy, with the LOOK of Tim.
Either way, almost every film of Tims has had a heart touching story or meaning. I can definitely see this film having a heart touching ending. But just to a

Either way, almost every film of Tims has had a heart touching story or meaning. I can definitely see this film having a heart touching ending. But just to a cheezy light script, and some Alice effects.
So it isn't a perfect Tim Burton film, but to me, its going to be a fun light family film, with the eye candy of dark twisted tones that I love.

Comedy?

Opens May 11th and the first trailer and poster just hit. Doesn't stay true to source material. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp teaming up for unoriginalness. It has all the makings to be complete shit.

Looks like Beetlejuice Meets the Addams Family. But in a good way. Save for Sleepy Hollow and Sweeny Todd (and Mars Attacks!) Burton's work has skewed a bit family-friendly, even if his aesthetics don't. This seems no different. Which is a good thing. It also seems to have a pulse, which means it's not only Burton doing effects, but also trying to make...something.

While Alice seemed to be more or less a chance for him to work again with a bunch of the same actors, I must say Eva Green, Chloe Moretz, and Jackie Earl Haley in particular, have me excited, while his girlfriend is proving indispensable in the trailer. Anyway, I don't care if it's more comedic than the TV show, it couldn't hope to be as engrossing. And every time Tim adapts something he finds a way of completely changing it, so that's no surprise.

Damn that is the biggest steamer I have seen since my last trip to the zoo. Its almost elephantine in its attempts to be funny but the results are incredibly stupid. whoever came up with turning this into another adams family needs to be cleaning sewage pipes at grand central station with their tongue after this steamer has been out for a while. If this is tim burton's way of getting a razzie award he seems to have insured he will definately get at least one for this one.

This looks brutal

Tim Burton + Johnny Depp + bad puns = Feces.

I have said this would suck under every article I read about it, and I really feel justified this time. Is it even possible for Tim Burton to make something good like Beetlejuice or Ed Scissor Hands again? He seems to be saying "No, I cannot."

If you haven't seen it, this is spot-on:
