The Dark Tower TV series finds a home on HBO

Oct. 27, 2011by: Paul Tassi

What the hell? In a span of a few days we’ve gone from THE DARK TOWER being dead and gone to being fully up and running again, albeit a few tens of millions lighter in the budget.

Brian Grazer said the film was in fact moving forward after he'd carved about $45M out of it, but there was little info on other films or the rumored TV series that was supposed to be a part of the epic DARK TOWER media “event,” which might be the best word for it.

But Grazer is still talking, and now has revealed via an interview with MTV that he’s locked down HBO to show the TV series.

“We’re going to do [The Dark Tower] with HBO,” he said. “We’ll do the TV with HBO, and we’ll do the movie with… to be determined. We’ll do it right.”

Obviously if you’re going to do a TV show or miniseries, there is no better channel than HBO which has big budgets and no restrictions on content. It’s a good choice for THE DARK TOWER, though as Grazer says, getting the films sorted out may take some doing.

Do you still want to see this happen?

Extra Tidbit: Yes, Ron Howard and Javier Bardem are still attached. This might be the singular biggest time commitment for an actor or director in recent memory.

Ok, I'm officially going to read these books now. I think the entire series would work best just as a HBO show. Trying to do movies in the mix just seems like the producers are more concerned with doind something new & different.

All I can say is this will be very, very easy to screw up. And Bardem is not Roland, go read Kings description of Roland...hes not it. But I enjoyed the books, not the best series I have ever read but the best of Kings i have read. Hopefully they do not screw the pooch on this one.

With the rise of PG-13 hackery, all of the interesting adult projects will be siphoned off by premium cable channels like HBO and Showtime and even AMC. Why? Because you can say fuck more than once, show some titties, and cut a motherfucker in half.

We are seeing the slow death of cinema. At least in theaters. Yet I'm not as sad as I thought I'd be. And that makes me sad.

I was so happy when I read this. HBO really is the only place for The Dark Tower. As others have pointed out, if they really want to do this right they should ditch the films and stick with the TV show, especially since it's going to be on HBO.

Personally, I hope Bardem drops out. At least as Roland. I just can't see him as 'ol long, tall, and ugly. But I do agree with boognishforever that he'd make a great Randall Flagg.

If they have to do this then HBO is the right channel to do it. I personally think the whole thing should be animated. I just don't know how some of it could be pulled off in with real actors. Especially "The Waste Lands".

Just stick with HBO, skip the feature stuff. Hopefully they recast the lead, I think Bardem is way too old to play the character.

I think Bardem would make a better Flagg than a Deschain.

HBO is perfect, still think they should get someone else than Bardem.

On the fence with Howard

but if they pull it off could be great, those books are epic (even if it loses it near the end). Abit bummed that two projects i didn't really care about (this and Lone Ranger) were rescued but two projects that would've been amazing (Bioshock and In the Mountains of Maddness) had a damn stake driven through them, its a tough time for R-rated big budget epics, I miss the 80's!

Man, we are so close to a perfect scenario here! Just DITCH THE THEATRICAL FILMS. . . H.B.O. all the way!!! And my gut tells me Javier won't end up being Roland . . .

Okay I have to say this..Game of Thrones > Dark Tower. Don't get me wrong I liked The Dark Tower but it cannot hold a candle to Game of Thones for epic story telling. Plus Martin is brutal..something you think King would be...but hes not...strange.
