The Drive sequel is just a book, not a movie, for now

12.12.2011

Despite having relatively little driving and being not at all what I expected, DRIVE is one of my favorite movies of this year, with its commitment to slow burn making its moments of extreme violence more powerful than any movie in recent memory.

It was the definition of a good standalone film. I don't need to see a sequel to learn what happens next to the mysterious drive, nor do I need a prequel telling me his backstory. But alas, a sequel is in the works, but not as a film. Not yet at least.

The book is called Driven, and that's cover art for it to the right. The story details are scarce, but we do have this:

Six years later – Phoenix. Out of nowhere someone wants Driver dead. Who? Why? Big mistake…

Now, there's no indication that this will become a film, but DRIVE was technically a success, grossing $35M on a $15M budget. Now that people actually know what the film is (it seemed pretty obscure at the time) and it's developing sort of a cult following, I would in no way rule it out that this might make it to the screen some day, for better or worse.

Please no sequels. The film is such an awesome, standalone adaptation.

I didn't get Drive. It just felt like a direct to dvd film and I didn't understand why it got so much praise. I saw it twice to see if i had missed something and still thought it was just OK. Ryan Gosling did a good job but I just couldn't get in to it.

I would see a Drive 2

But only with Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn back. If that's the case then bring it on.

superro....dude....

there wasn't a lot of action in the movie because it wasn't an action movie. it was a slowburning neo-noir gangster film hearkening back to old school cinema and avant garde films. The point. you missed it.

Watch the trailer my friend.. it has the same "action" vibe as Faster or even The Transporter.

hmmm...

Acting wise was sublime, but IMO for this movie to be seen as an "action movie" is a bit overrated.. damn it was slow! But i guess this is what happens when you call a movie "drive" and the guy just keeps hiding his car in the dark...

Bring the thumbs down.. I know, but come on, such great casting and such a awesome premise only to be left with such whinny drama and no fast car chasing or adrenaline pumping scenes..

If it was sold as a pure drama then things might have been better

I must be one of the only people who didn't love Drive. I liked it, but I don't think i'll watch it again.

I think "Drive" was very close to a perfect movie, which is rare. And it works perfectly as a stand-alone film. But I won't lie that, in the event that both Ryan Gosling AND Nicolas Winding Refn decided they wanted to revisit the Driver, I would absolutely show up to see what they had to dish out. Now, I doubt it'll come to pass, but I'm not gonna sit on my high horse and pretend that if the stars aligned I wouldn't throw my money their way.

Puh, the film is my pick of '11 but the original book is a generic piece of shit. This is just a cash in. Refn and Gosling wouldnt touch this with yours...

I like that it's a whole 6 years later, that's a little more interesting than say a month later. I'll definitely read this when it comes out.

I wouldn't mind a sequel, but having Drive as a stand alone film is just perfect. so... yeah, leave it alone, hopefully.
