The final frontier arrives with the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery

05.17.2017

Just this morning we finally got our first real look at CBS' Star Trek: Discovery thanks to the release of a photo which showed off Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou and Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham. During CBS' Upfront presentation, the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery was unveiled and gave us a glimpse at all the strange new worlds and wonderous alien creatures which we'll be exploring in Star Trek's return to the small-screen. Check it out!

It's certainly quite visually impressive, and although the series is supposed to take place in the Prime universe and not J.J. Abrams' Kelvin universe, it appears that they've borrowed more than a few elements from the rebooted movies. That said, I'm hugely excited to see what the series will bring and what kind of stories it will tell. The trailer definitely poses a lot of questions, such as Michael Burnham's relationship with Sarak (James Frain) and those fearsome looking Klingons who look quite unlike any we've seen before.

We'll also be in store for a few more episodes as CBS has announced that they've increased their order from thirteen-episodes to fifteen. The first episode of the series will premiere on CBS later this fall, but all the subsequent episodes will stream exclusively on CBS All Access. Star Trek: Discovery will also have an aftershow, Talking Trek, which will air on CBS All Access.

What do you folks think of this trailer for Star Trek: Discovery?

Meh...loves me some Trek, but not overly excited about this. Redesign on the Klingons reminds me of "Enemy Mine"...

Hard to make any assumptions from that trailer. Like most of you, I'm still 50/50 on this.

Sigh....

Mary Sue trailer that falls flat.
Will she learn Vulcan... Yes.
Will the Klingon attack yet learn to respect the Earthling Warrior Queen where so many others have never returned..... Yes.
Will we return to the same plot structure of bad choices: A. Save some alien culture lose ship & crew. B. Save ship & crew but lose large part of alien culture. Then the Mary Sue inevitable choice C.... Save everyone learn fortune cookie wisdom. YES. & some dumb ass alien/robot will take a step closer

.
Except for the fan boys who will watch ANYTHING Trek, this is DOA.

YOU NAILED IT! Seriously fuck this bullshit. Notice how they went out of their way to make sure that white people had no prominent speaking role.

Mixed feelings

For the most part the trailer looks great but I have to agree with many others; why mess with the Klingons? I like to think that, story wise the will explain the difference in their look but to show them like that, without context in the trailer, is a mistake. I have to agree with most people though. will not pay for the steaming service.

Mixed feelings...
I don't mind to update the Klingons, but I think they went a bit too far.
FX look good so far. The Ship doesn't look as shitty as it did in the teaser.
I will let it sink in for a while.

"Let's make something as iconic as the Klingons look like cheap lizard men! This will surely please the fans who are already super stoked to subscribe to a network to see this show! Even if people don't like that, we have female leads, and that's all that matters in 2017. We even made sure they weren't white women (maybe we'll make one a lesbian in the 4th season that will surely come). Screw the Klingons, we MUST pander to what is important!" - CBS

Get the criticism of the Klingons, but why come down so hard on casting a black female lead? Don't even understand the criticism. Are you saying women have no place in the cast of a Star Trek show?

Ralphus has a good point about the Women leads... even though Voyager had a female lead (first one on Star Trek I think) but with all the bullshit forced down everyones throats its really hard to not think that they did the casting just to appease the SJW's, even though Im 100% for diversity just not "FORCED"... but thats just my opinion (and from the looks online I'm not the only one thinking like that either) LLAP

Wow, so whenever there is a female and/or non-caucasian lead character it has to be for politically correct reasons? DS9 with Avery Brooks in the lead must have really bothered you.

"We even made sure they weren't white women". That has to be one of the most ridiculous comments on here.

Maybe it's the way the trailer is edited, but the performances all seemed extremely wooden. Everyone talks in this measured monotone voice that makes whatever they're saying sound dull.

Agreed. Michelle Yeoh in particular. I think the problem with her is there is such a strong language barrier (yes i know she can speak english) but there is something lost in the performance when she has to recite star trek mumbo jumbo with such a strong accent/language barrier. So in the end if she has abit of trouble delivering regular english dialogue with proper emotion and inflection, it's going to be even harder for her to deliver dialogue that she doesnt even understand.

Who the hell thought turning the Klingons into lizardmen was a good idea? Ugh.

The rest of it looks promising.

Missed opportunity

At least they got some strong female leads in there. That's the most important thing.

Meh

Production values look great, but it still strikes me as pretty dull.
I'd really rather have a 3rd Generation with a new Enterprise, move the franchise forward rather than cannibalize the past.

prequel was already tried and failed

Star Trek doesnt need a half ass prequel series. so much pandering in that trailer. Do a new trek show years after next generation with Will Rikers son running a new enterprise and ill be back. for now ill stick to the star wars

Looks good, too bad I won't be watching it...

The show looks good, but I won't be signing up for CBS' streaming service. I will literally be paying a monthly charge to watch one show. I'll simply have to wait for it to come out on blu-ray.

Ignoring the Klingons... and the fact the uniforms have stepped away from the red/blue/yellow... I think it looks great. I think it looks shiny and new, and the trailer has got me buzzing.

People can bash it all they like, when it lands on Netflix I will be watching it immediately. I love Trek. All Trek. Original through to the new films.

You can't tell how a 15 episode series is going to go from a 2 minute trailer... but for me, it looks great and got me hyped. Job done.

I liked it as well, and I am a big Trek fan. I agree about the Klingons and not judging it on just this trailer. It took getting used to all the shows when they first aired.

I originally only went for Netflix to watch the Marvel series... but now I have a new reason for having it. And excited I am! :-)

First off if I ever watch this it will be torrent watch., I'm not paying for yet another online sub service for a single show. Not to mention the greed of CBS disgusts me. Netflix only has their streaming service, not a over the air paid by commercial channel. CBS has that and yet they want to bilk us for more money just for this? fuck them. That being said the production values look high. But the fucking Klingons look like shit. WTF is up with the Uruk'hai appearing on Star Trek? When did they

When did they get transported off middle earth and into space? Why the fuck would they mess with the classic design? Doubt I'll even bother, but if I do I damn sure ain't paying CBS for it.

Looks pretty!

Weird Klingons aside, I think everything to do with the Federation looks great! Would love to see less lens flares, but this all looks like footage from the same episode, so hopefully that's just a symptom of the pilot.

I dunno, I think the negative Nancy's below were never open to being kind to this show -- I, for one, am gonna watch it!

Those dutch angles and lens flares actually made me laugh out loud. I hope this turns out to be good, but I haven't seen any of the other TV shows and I didn't love the new movies, so I'm pretty indifferent to the show.

Looks great, but...

It's such a shame it'll be airing on CBS. That pretty much guarantees the right audience won't be watching. So few people watch tv live anymore and CBS will only stream their newer stuff on their own paid-subscription app. I think it's safe to say this will be a one-season effort.

One trailer and you've already dismissed it. Maybe they will reboot TNG movies with a younger cast and that way you can just stick with the characters you already know.

Looks ok. Some of the shots seem to be copying Abrams' films a bit too much. Trailer doesn't give away too much, but nothing really grabs my interest.
