The first crystal clear look at Captain America's Red Skull!

03.03.2011

Damn.

I find myself more and more impressed with CAPTAIN AMERICA's visual styling the more I see from the film, and this first look at Red Skull is no exception.

We've caught glimpses of him before, but this is definitely the first official shot (via Entertainment Weekly) of the baddie, played by Hugo Weaving under that terrifying masterpiece of make-up and latex.

As this is the internet, I'm sure that some of you will disagree with my assessment, but I say the Skull and his outfit are pretty rocking, and they've done a great job with the character here. Also, head over to EW for an interesting interview with director Joe Johnston that goes along with this pic.

Your thoughts?

Solid.

Excellent work on this. And it seems to be practical makeup effects, and not CGI. Somehow this looks so convincing, unlike a lot of the characters in Green Lantern.

Awesome!!!

I think the makeup is spot on,if you make it bloody and gross it takes away from the villain in itself, because all youre doing is looking at the face and going eeewwwlll. remember the first live action captain america?look at that versions red skull and you'll see what im saying.this movie is gonna rock!

It's cool looking, but...

...will someone explain how he comes to look like this? I mean, if it is "his skin has come off", then do it Hellraiser-style and make it all muscley and bloody. If that is his actual skin, why is it red, and is the rest of his body red?

Just wanna be able to suspend my disbelief a little bit with a believable story.

It depends on which red skull, but more importantly, let me answer your question with another question.

... will someone explain to me why you can't spend 20 seconds on google and find the answer out for yourself.

And if you are looking for believable stories, I can recommend some fine art house dramas - comic book film adaptations are not going to deliver cinema verite.

eeeek

Can't stop looking at this. It's really good. Is this an untouched, cold light of day shot? It looks like it might be - which is doubly impressive.

A lot of times a magazine cover like this doesn't do justice to this type of character (with heavy make-up), but it looks absolutely amazing. I can't wait to see how it'll look within the movie itself.

Digging the HYDRA logo on his belt buckle...so i guess they didnt want to show any nazi symbols on his costume (fair enough is I guess they want to hit a broad audience of all ages). SHIELD Vs HYDRA in the future maybe?

Most people are impressed with CAPTAIN AMERICA's visual styling and Red Skull looks absolutely perfect. Extra Tidbit: So many great comic adaptations have been ignored by Oscar that it really doesn't matter any more. That's part of why their ratings are still in the toilet even with "young and hip" hosts.

While I am not big on the movie (never been a big Cap fan and the trailer didn't impress me), I have to admit this looks pretty damn cool. And Hugo Weaving makes an excellent villain, so there is that for him.

That makeup looks amazing, and you can't complain when you get weaving as a villain. If I had to pick it apart, I'm really not digging the GI JOE look to the uniform.

But the icing on the cake is it's Hugo Weaving under there. Captain America's demise will be, inevitable.

I agree. Skulls aren't red. If they are covered in muscle and blood, it won't be smooth.
(and, of course, let's not forget the fact that skin protects us from infection....an exposed skull is gonna die of pneumonia, AIDS, hepatitis, etc etc)

This is what I am talking about. The comic brought to life. He has to be one of the top (looks wise) villains in Marvel film history. I mean just going based on visuals, he's great!

Looks bad ass, but the EW interview says a Nazi experiment, similar to the U.S. Super Soldier experiment, goes bad and turns him into the Red skull. Why aren't they using the real Red Skull? In the comics, Hitler trains Johann Schmidt to be the head Nazi terrorist leader and gives him the uniform and a red skull mask, as both the color red and skulls play a huge part in Nazi symbolism.

That would've been better and fit into the recent "Marvel" universe attempt to be as close to believable as possible while maintaining a "fantasy" quality of superhero movies.

Oh boy, I get to be Mr. Thumbs down. The style is awesome. Perfect. Straight out of the comics. But in the real world, it just doesn't fit some how. If you told me that was a model and not the actor standing there, I'd have believed it. Is it just the brightness of the red? I don't know what it is. STILL super stoked for this . . .

It does look a little photoshopped but that's forgivable.

The cut of the jacket looks a wee bit on the comicy side, as opposed to the more realistic side we've seen thusfar.

But we'll have to wait and see it in it's setting before we can really tell how good it is.

I'm with you, Bigger Boat. This is TOO "out of the comics". Marvel has been very good about believability of characters (except Hulk...conservation of mass, anyone?). But if this guy really is walkign around with a SKULL for a head, then:

1) It's too large by a ton.
2)Veins and muscles would be present, otherwise he couldn't talk, move his eyes, etc.
