The first full trailers for The Wolverine are finally here and they do not disappoint!

Mar. 27, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

The Wolverine Banner

After what has seemed like an eternity the first full trailers for James Mangold's THE WOLVERINE have been released today and they are sure to get you psyched for Logan's return. The trailers share some similar footage but both are dark and clearly show that Hugh Jackman's character is really going to be put through the ringer this time around.

Normally I'd talk a little bit more about what's in the trailer or ramble on about why it has raised my level of anticipation for a film but you've waited too long for THE WOLVERINE trailer to deal with that bullshit. All I have to say is there are ninjas, a possible Silver Samurai appearance, and a pretty sweet looking action sequence that takes place on top of a train. Oh, and I can't f*cking wait for THE WOLVERINE.

Domestic:

International:

Synopsis:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

THE WOLVERINE is unleashed on July 26th, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: There's a shot at the end of the international trailer that shows Wolverine being blown through a hole in the wall. That hole looks similar to a picture director James Mangold had tweeted awhile back. While he's dangling from the hole it seems like Wolverine is looking up at whoever did it and it appears that he 1. knows who it is and 2. is surprised to see him or her. Do you think this is of significance or am I reading too much into it? Who could it be?

I can't say I'm thrilled with the trailer but I'm still intrigued, and hoping that they're just holding off on the good stuff. The trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine looked AWESOME but the movie itself was shit so I'm holding out hope that it will be the opposite case for this one.

I don't understand the director bashing...

Based on the trailer, I'd say this looks darker, and has a better plot than Origins (Thank God!)... But I don't understand why so many are disappointed with the pick of director. Understandably, a lot are disappointed that Aronofsky passed on this, and I think his film would've been epic... But I don't think Mansfield is a bad way to go. He's got a lot of great films under his belt, and I think his remake of 3:10 to Yuma was the perfect blend of drama and action. If he takes the same care

Who knows what we would've gotten with a different director and script, but this still looks pretty good. The scene on the train could be amazing, the potential for proper martial arts fight scenes is there, and, on a side note, I want that guy's futuristic posture support bed - looks comfy.
I still have high hopes for this film.

Also kudos to Jackman for channeling Pierce Brosnan's look from the start of Die Another Day in the trailer's early scenes. That's always a winner.

I want to love this so bad. Aside from Jackman always bringing home the bacon - this wasn't at all what I expected. I thought it'd be a stand alone film. I thought there'd be sweeping landscapes, wide shots of Japan, more feudal than inner city. No mountain top romance in the Japanese countryside?

I reserve full judgement of course until I've seen it but Wolverine needs a visionary director. Jackman's effort looks unparalleled and I could only imagine if Darren worked with him as well as he

Meh........

Excuse me if I don't get too excited over these trailers. I admire Hugh Jackman a lot, and I love him as Wolverine. Gotta be honest though. If this film does not work, then it's time to close the book on a Wolverine stand alone series. Darren Aronofsky would've been a good director for this, but I enjoy James Mangold's work just as much as Aronofsky's. Hope for the best, but don't be surprised if this film doesn't work and or click.

Dont know. This looks and sounds nothing at all like Claremonts and Millerss original story. And that train bit looked damn cheesy.

Well at least they had some foghorn in the trailer. LOL I really have no opinion about this, looks like they recycled a lot of standard action set pieces and scenes, but truly I hope this rocks as Jackman is Wolverine.

Good enough?

LIked that they toned down the hair as if you add a foot to the character he can have bed head instead of a quaff. The absolute two best wolverine moments were the bar fight at the beginning of X-men and the siege scene in X2. Both had a very close quarter aspect, unless colossus throws him. The believability came from if a 400 lb immortal with 8 inch blades were to scrap it would stay within judo range. I will see this out of respect, but I kind of miss the possibility that Aaronosky was

I wanted at least one scene where he gets jumped at night and you only get to see it through a screened wall under moonlight. Some real ninja aspect. This just really reminds me of the original matrix.

Well, that settles that.

I will definitely not be seeing this in the theater. They had me up until they introduced the worst parts of Superman 2 and The Crow.... vulnerability for love.

I think it looks amazing and easily has a chance of being the best X-Men yet since it comes out way before X-Men: Days of Future Past. I think the tone is perfect for a film like this and also towards the Silver Samurai storyline they are using.

I think this will be the definitive Wolverine film that we have always wanted. Anyway I am very excited for this and this trailer was very worth the wait. Can't wait to see the film opening night.

Be burned before

This just reminds me way too much of Origins. Is it getting closer, yeah but the over the top fight scenes really bother me. That entire train sequence just looked bad. The entire plot revolves around removing his healing ability. Of which he gained from his own dna mutation. So he'll lose his power or at least it'll be dampened until around the 3rd act then he's back to immortal and tearing shit up.
Honestly why does Fox have such a hard time with this character? Please Marvel use those

My Bank Account

This summer is going to absolutely obliterate my bank account! Better pick up a temporary weekend job while I still can.

But more importantly, I take back all of the negative things I've said about the Wolverine since Aronofsky dropped out. This looks stellar. Cannot wait.

Could go either way

The effects on the claws looks better but in a lot of the obvious 3D scenes, a lot of the CGI looks pretty bad. Obvious green screening on 30 Rock levels, except not intentionally. Idk, it could go both ways.

Of course the trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine was good, too. But I'll see this on opening night because of these trailers and reserve full judgement until after the credits. James Mangold did give us 3:10 to Yuma, after all.

Aronofsky should have directed...

He could of elevated this material to the next level. As it stands right now, it looks like a generic action movie.

Much the same way Winding Refn elevated Drive, which in the hands of a lesser director would have been an average to below average movie.

Here we go again, sorta...

As you can tell by my user name, Wolvie is just about my all-time favorite superhero. It's a good week, cause Snake-Eyes is a close second even though he is more of the super soldier mold. Anywho, yeah it still looks as if the bung holes at Fox just want to continue to drag this through the mud and continually tie the hands of the character. I truly admire HUGH JACK'dMAN and his passion for the role, but alas even he needs to make a payday. Will I enjoy it better than Origins? How could I not?

something missing

Namely massive amounts of fake blood. My respect for Jackman aside, I feel the best character version of Wolvie to see the screen has been Michael C. Hall in the first couple seasons of Dexter. Someone should have set all the key players down with Seven Samurai, Dexter, First Blood and Predator until they figured out how to marry them all into a cohesive story of an unstoppable lone wolf killing machine trying to find his place in the world.

Wow, no thanks.

This is not even remotely the Japan arc.

I'm now of the mindset that Fox is incapable of getting out of their own way in order to make a good X-Men movie. And while I love Hugh Jackman, I'm tired of his emo Wolverine.

i remember when darren aronofsky was attached...

this was supposed to be a "stand-alone" wolverine movie that's "darker and grittier" than the other x-men movies (which we all wanted). this trailer however looks like its in the same vein as all the other x-men movies (or all the other Fox-Marvel movies to a certain degree). i guess that's what the studio forced, and i wouldn't be surprised if that was the REAL reason arronfsky left the project and didn't return.

Actually...

These are very disappointing. Looks like a Batman Begins rip off with a generic vibe.

No, because it from the few scenes they showed it feels and looks generic, uninteresting, uninspired, etc... like FOX directed it. Its just a trailer so the movie could be way better than this, but so far this is disappointing.

It's Wolverine...

so I'm psyched. Definitely looks like they upped the action quota- the first Wolverine miniseries wasn't quite grand enough for a summer tentpole flick, I get it. Maybe if it was the first X-Men movie done with barely any interest and a modest budget they could've done a proper, low radar adaptation, but hey, this is the world we live in now.

He needs a mask.

These trailers alone are already heaps better than Origins. Hugh Jackman is a badass no doubt, but I seriously think it's time to give him the classic Wolverine mask. If Captain America and Thor can pull off their suits without looking (too) goofy, I think Wolverine would look pretty damn awesome with his signature mask on. I get this feeling like he has looked the same in one too many movies. Put the mask on, and it'll be awesome!

I totally agree. He's a Super Hero whose costume in the movies is a wife beater tank top. It would make sense that you would want to conceal your identity in foreign territory otherwise you would attract so much attention to yourself, you'd be a human target, like Tony Stark in the Iron Man movies.

I'm confused. There is already a mutant cure in the movies, if Wolverine wanted to be human he could have followed Rogue and taken the cure with her. This feels kind of like a rehash of what part 3 did, we've already covered this ground.

But at that time, Jean Grey was still alive, so he would actually need his powers if anything to save her. Now he's out lived everyone he's cared for, whats the point in falling in love again and again.

But the cure still existed after Jean. Plus, and it's been a while so I might be mistaken, I thought Rogue took the cure after Jean died.

Still my point is, we've already dealt with this "cure" angle. Now we are dealing with it again. Apparently curing mutants is very easy to do in the movie universe.

Did you watch the movie. The cure wore off after a while. It wasn't succesful.

Two points 1) accepting the cure was seen as a political statement; mankind should accept mutants as they are 2) Logan could very well have tried the cure and it didn't work for him.

Train sequence worries me.

The rest looks pretty good.

I have a feeling this will end up being a solid if not unspectacular movie. Better than Origins but probably still not what it should be, which is essentially a great personal story with lot of bloody stabbing and very real violence. This looks like it will keep the story, but wrap it in a PG-13 CGI heavy layer, which has worked well for the Marvel Studios films so far but I don't know if that's appropriate for a solo Wolverine movie, the same way it's not for The

I will see it, I will most likely quite enjoy it, but I can't see me being blown away by it. I'm open for that to change however.

I agree. The small quiet moments from the trailer that I like are very few and far between compared to the spectacle, and this particular story isn't supposed to be flashy like that. Reminds me of the first "Mission: Impossible".

train fight looks sloppy, but other than that the international trailer is waaaay better than the domestic (which reminded me too much of the first godawful Wolverine movie.)

What's the timeline here actually? SInce it shows a flashback to Jean Grey does that mean this takes place after X3? I thought it would be a sequel to Origins. Or does that whole "I'm mortal now" story line supposed to keep the audience guessing if he will gain his healing factor at the end again?

Figure of speech.

Looks fairly decent to me, although not at all how I was picturing it. It's a little too sleek for an adaptation of that particular Frank Miller story. Still looking forward to it. I hope they were speaking figuratively when they said they'd make Logan mortal. He isn't immortal, he just ages slow and is difficult to kill. He would die of old age like everybody else, at some point.

i don't know...It seems like they're using that cliched superhero theme where the hero's like "I hate my powers...wait I miss my powers...Yeah I have powers again!"

Nearly lost me with the terrible looking train sequence. I still think it was a mistake to take the Japan storyline and set it in a modern timeframe, but this does look better than Origins. It would be hard to make a movie worse than that.

Er, what's your defenition of modern? If this was in tune with the comics it would be set in the late 70's or 80's.

The healing factor thing is a cool way to go concidering that in the 90s he lost his healing for a short time after magneto bones and didnt get it back til he was almost killed by deadpool. This already looks better than origins origins.
