The full Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller Super Bowl Ad for Honda

01.30.2012

As the Big Game draws near you can anticipate an onslaught of "clever" commercials (they better be at $4 million a pop for airtime) and this one fits squarely in that category. Take a look:

Matthew Broderick reprises his role as Ferris Bueller in this ad for Honda's CRV, which is a pretty cool idea, although the execution felt a bit off for me. The distance between the first time Broderick played Bueller to now is definitely felt. Plus, he's missing his "crew" which just doesn't seem right. And as "family friendly" and "fuel efficient" as the CRV may be, it's still a major step down from a Ferrari.

Regardless, it's still a fun little marketing ploy and I think most people will dig it. I could think of a lot more terrible ways to promote a car. The ad is directed by Todd Philips (THE HANGOVER) as part of Honda CR-V's "Leap List" campaign, which encourages people to do things they've always wanted to do. Like driving a Honda CRV and having a car payment.  Yippie!

Extra Tidbit: Anyone want to see a sequel to Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Or, are you like me and feel that it could be a very embarrassing crash and burn?

Wow what a waste

Instead of showing potential for an interesting twist, it was just another useless plug for a shitty product. I had a 2007 CR-V for a rental - thank God I got rid of it for my 2008 Mini Cooper S. What POS that was. Gives Beuller a bad name in every way possible. Lame.

Who's next?

Clever idea. Maybe next year we'll see a commercial reintroducing the Cadillac Miller-Meteor with Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray.

This was kind of weird. It's not Ferris Bueller; it's Matthew Broderick acting like Ferris Bueller, but he's still Matthew Broderick...

This is a little disappointing. I feel like they could have done a lot more with this. Namely the addition of Cameron and making Broderick play the actual Ferris Bueller 20 years later. That's more what I had in mind when they were teasing this. It's not awful though.

It's technically not even Ferris in the ad

It's Broderick playing Broderick, but of course it's meant to be a direct reference to his most famous character, what with the day-bow-bows and such. But there's something cold and cynical about it. It reminds me of the sort of thing Bill Hicks would refer to as the soulless marketers sucking Satan's cock. I didn't enjoy it in a nostalgic, cutesy way; it just felt forced and Broderick doesn't really even look comfortable with what he's doing here.

I'm sorry to resort to the cliche

But thanks for exploiting a favorite movie to sell me a car. It's neat to see Ferris again. It's lame this is why. Not a bludgeoning of my childhood, just lame.

@Half

Agreed, with Ferris' luck he should be the president of a Fortune 500 company who decides not to come into work and hides from his staff.

To be fair, he's not playing Ferris, he's playing himself.

Pretty good...

But this ad is suffering from a severe lack of Alan Ruck.
