The Garbage Pail Kids are coming back to the big screen

Mar. 12, 2012by: Alex Maidy

I almost feel like this is going to turn into a rant about remakes/board game adaptations, but there is news today that Michael Eisner's production company will be releasing a new Garbage Pail Kids movie. Many of you may not remember that there was a previous film made based on the trading cards that was released back in 1987. Even fewer of you likely remember that it was a musical film. I, for one, will never forget the wretched pile of garbage that it was.

For those of you who have never heard of Garbage Pail Kids, they were a spoof of the Cabbage Patch Kids.  But, where the Cabbage Patch Kids were sweet and wholesome and loving dolls, the Garbage Pail kids were disgusting, vile, and borderline inappropriate trading cards/stickers.  In other words, perfect for pre-teen boys.

THE GARBAGE PAIL KIDS MOVIE was an obvious attempt to cash-in on the franchise name (we never see that happen in Hollywood, now do we?) but it failed miserably.  There has been a recent resurgence in the popularity of the trading cards which likely has led to today's news.

There is one brightside to this announcement.  Eisner's Tornante Company has hired visual artist PES to direct the film from a screenplay by newcomer Michael Vukadinovich.

PES has made some very intriguing YouTube videos with stop-motion animation.  His work evokes the short films of Michel Gondry, which is never a bad thing.  Check out his "Western Spaghetti" below.

Extra Tidbit: I am still waiting for Hollywood to make POGS: THE MOVIE.

My wife and I were just at the mall yesterday where we saw a copy of the movie. I remember sneaking the cards into the house cause my parents thought they were gross, and wouldn't let me buy them.

I am one of the fans of the original movie... I guess it was a child hood favorite and when it was released on DVD, it was a day one purchase for me.

I just wonder how a new GPK movie will work! Will they make it kid friendly or more grown up? I hope not kid friendly, cuz This will be one that if they make for kids, kids ownt go, cuz they have zero attachment to the original cards or move.

Thought the first film was tedious and lame, BUT, I will support this only if they use the exact same actors and the exact same costumes used in the original 1987 movie.

The latex must be falling apart and the mouths shouldn't work still, the actors must be of old age, release it near Halloween and it will be spooky and weird.

I loved the cards and the movie as a kid, I bought the DVD a couple of years ago and was so disappointment with myself for ever enjoying it. I still dig the cards and think that given the right script you can make the GPK work as a movie so I look forward to seeign them try. I wonder if they'll look creepier CGI'd than those puppets. I'm going to miss Ally Gator as he was kind of the only good thing about the original.

who cares if they remake it?

its not our money thats getting put into it.

just saw the original on 35mm at a screening and it def does not hold up well. Still a childhood classic for me.

Winston farting on the runway and walking with swag is the highlight of the movie.

Why?

There's no reason for this...at all. Making more money doesn't even work this time around; there's not nearly enough money to be made to justify its production.

POGs would have to be tiny UFOs that zip around killing people like bullets, and the only way to stop them is for the local youth to knock them out of the sky with their SLAMMER POGS (those big, heavy ones made of glass and brass). The UFO POGs materialize from magazine and comicbook pages, which serves to explain why they're emblazoned with all manner of characters and words.
