The Godzilla reboot gets yet another writer

11.10.2011

Is it really that hard to keep a writer on GODZILLA? You've got Gareth Edwards (MONSTERS) directing which is a good match but what's going on here?

Max Borenstein has been hired on to write another draft for the reboot. David Goyer wrote a draft and was attached to the film but apparently is no longer on the project. No detail as to why he left. Before Goyer it was David Callaham. Goyer was brought in to add to Callaham's script. Now it's all up to Borenstein.

Edwards is really committed to making this a good film. He's stated that he wants nothing less than amazing especially since he loves that big ass scaley monster so much.

I could really give two craps less about seeing another Godzilla film but since Edwards is involve it's sort of hard to stay uninterested.

I would rather them just get it right above anything else. But there HAS to be at least 2 monsters, PLEASE!

If done right...

...this could be great and a boon to monster films in America. You have the man who made MONSTERS, directing the KING of the monsters...sounds like fun to me! For those who think Godzilla films are all for the kiddos, check out Shusuke Kaneko's Gamera trilogy (esp. the last 2 films) which are out on Blu-Ray, and his decidedly darker take on Godzilla in Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.

I could complain...

That there are no more original ideas for Hollywood blockbusters, but the last time they got creative with this genre we got the motion sickness that was Cloverfield. Reboot away!

so if Hollywood makes a Godzilla movie it's unoriginal, if Japan makes the 30th Godzilla movie it's a fresh idea?

let me watch...

Godzilla Against Mecha-Godzilla or Godzilla: Giant Monsters All out Attack... making a "perfect" Godzilla movie is akin to making a "perfect" Friday the 13th movie - it will never happen but if it did, it would be missing it's heart, soul and all the cheese factor... Godzilla needs a certain amount of "LOW-TECH" special effects and miniature cities, lots of smoke and debris, great lighting and rubber suited monsters.

The special effects in the Godzilla film were actually pretty top notch back in the 60's. It is easy for people for pass the old Godzilla films off as cheese yet compare them to most giant monster movies over here in the US around the same time (where our monsters were pretty much insects filmed crawling around toy cars) and Japan was WAY ahead of it's game and we were desperately trying to catch up. The only reason why Japan never left the man-in-suit method is because the genre took upon a life of it's own and it is more or less considered tradition . But had it not been for O'Brian and Harryhausen's pioneering of stop motion animation then Eiji Tsuburaya and his team at Toho Studios would have been the worlds greatest special effects at the time.

GODZILLA rules

...just not the AMERICAN Godzilla with Mathew Brodrick, that one sucked.
I think this could be good if they keep the traditional design of Godzilla and not mess with the look, and also it really needs to be a man in a decent rubber suit and NOT CGI (except when he's swimming underwater, then it's ok to be CGI just make it look like it's a CGI guy in a rubber Godzilla suit swimming with fake bubbles and you'll be find... use PRACTICAL effects, IE: Limited CGI and REAL model houses and sets to

Godzilla suits were never made out of rubber. They were often latex-based suites. and it's 'MECHAgodzilla' :).

Why isn't Gareth Edwards writing it himself?

What?

Obviously Godzilla is much more of a cultural icon - but is this idea only given credence by the success of Cloverfield?

My two favorite scenes in Monsters: When the dude rebandages the girl's arm, and when the 2 aliens meet at the gas station. I'm not much of a romantic, but actually I am.

"is it hard to keep a writer?"

more like 'is it really this hard to write a freakin Godzilla movie??'

I mean seriously, the writing should be the shortest part of this production, and as a Godzilla fan I proudly say that!

now, off to watch Godzilla vs. King Kong again... which now that I think about it, could probably happen if this new Godzilla movie is successful. Peter Jackson, meet... this guy from that movie Monsters...
