The Golden Globes nominations are here! King's Speech leads the way with 7 noms

12.14.2010

The nominations for the 68th Annual Golden Globes were announced earlier this morning by Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes and Blair Underwood. Leading the pack with seven nominations was THE KING'S SPEECH followed closely by six each for THE SOCIAL NETWORK and THE FIGHTER. Alice In Wonderland? Seriously?

Alice in Wonderland for best comedy/musical or anything for that matter, seriously? I don't know about Burlesque or The Tourist since they haven't been released in my country yet, but i've seen Alice and in my opinion, it's one of the WORST movies of the year! I hated the special effects cause they looked too fake, i hated Depp's performance which was a rehash of Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka and i hated the formulaic script! If you want a good "Alice returns to Wonderland and finds out it's shit" movie, then ADAPT AMERICAN MCGEE'S ALICE ALREADY, Hollywood! Also why did Toy Story 3 get shunned? It seems that they drew the best Comedy/Musical noms out of a hat or something! I mean come on, even Get Him To The Greek was better than Alice! Hell, The Other guys was better than Alice... Come to think of it, Russel Brand should get a nomination for his performance as Aldus Snow! He was HILLARIOUS! Way Better than Johnny "i've been playing the same character for 10 years" Depp!

On another note, am i the only one who thinks that The Kids Are All Right is a bit overrated? I mean yeah, it had great performances and a decent, although by no means great, script, but i think that there's only one word that can describe it: lukewarm! Not funny enough for a comedy and not dramatic enough for a drama... As far as indie movies go, i'm with Winter's Bone all the way and until i see Black Swan, Jennifer Lawrence deserves an Oscar and any award she gets nominated for, HANDS DOWN!

Finally I think that The Social Network will dominate this year's awards, with a little Inception on the side!

Complete Crap

The Golden Globes have shown themselves to be a complete joke. They should stick to T.V. nominations. Oh wait, that's the Emmys.

Abput 90% of this is awful. "Alice In Wonderland" as a 'best' anything is such a fucking joke, and why is there only one actual comedy nominated (and I'll excuse "Burlesque", as it is a musical)- how about "Easy A" or some such? Also, why isn't Leo, JGL, or Marion Collitard (sp?) nominated for "Inception"? I call horseshit on almost all of this.

We just need to do away with pointless awards like the GG's, SAG awards, people's choice, etc. The Oscar's are the only ones with any real weight for movies, and even if I don't always agree with their choices I can respect them (most the time). I mean, how many awards does a single film/performance need, especially since the same movies/actors win at each award show anyway.

It's been a great year of movies. Social, Inception, 127, The Town, Toy Story 3, The Fighter, Blue Valentine. Great year. The only noms I have a problem with are....Michael Douglas Wall Street 2, Johnny Depp The Tourist, and Angelina Jolie The Tourist. Everything else looks just as I expected.

Replace The Walking Dead and Dexter with Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy and the TV nominees would be great, cant believe there was no supporting actor nominations for Boardwalk Empire. Apart from that and the comedy ,musical section being bullshit and NO LOVE for Never Let Me Go or Shutter Island the nominees are not too bad.

127 Hours

127 Hours is nominated for best original screenplay? I'm pretty sure it was based on the book "Between a rock and a hard place." AND it's about a TRUE STORY! As for the other nominations, 2010 was a terrible year for movies.

The GGs don't have two categories for Best Screenplay, they only have one, sop they just call all of them Original. They should just call it Best Screenplay.

Never before has a potential winner been so obvious

I would wager that the odds of The Kids Are Alright winning best Musical or Comedy is probably 99-1 in favour. Why? because with the possible exception of Red, it is the only movie listed that didn't suck horribly. That is the worst list for a category that I have ever seen for any award show outside the Grammys.

Guys, chill out. Yeah, the musical or comedy noms are utter shit but pretty much all the other noms are on the money.

With a couple exceptions here and there, they got pretty much all the movies I wanted nominated in. Inception and Social Network are in for best score. Fincher, Nolan, and Aronofsky are in for Director. Jennifer Lawrence wasn't snubbed (though John Hawkes was). Best Animated film and the Supporting Actor/Actress categories are pretty much flawless. I wish Harry Potter had

I wish Harry Potter had gotten some love but I suppose that would be for the more technical awards like cinematography and stuff which apparently the GG's don't do. The Town certainly deserved a best Pic and or best Director but there are only a limited amount of spots I guess and I can't really think of which of their nominations I would drop to add The Town.

I also don't understand how Social Network and 127 Hours are ORIGINAL screenplays. Aren't they both based on books or real life events or something. Wouldn't that make them adapted? Whatever.

It's unfortunate that the Comedy/Musical noms are such crap because that's usually where the underrated movies that the Oscars ignore usually win. Remember, these are the guys that gave Colin Farrell a much deserved award for In Bruges. The Oscars couldn't be bothered.

Other nominations I would have liked to see: Mark Ruffalo- Best Supporting Actor(TKAAR), Leo DiCaprio- Best Actor (Shutter Island), John Hawkes- Best Supporting Actor (Winter's Bone), Four Lions- Best Comedy/Original Screenplay, Kick-Ass- Best Comedy, Ben Mendelsohn- Best Supporting Actor (Animal Kingdom), Rob Corrdry- Best Actor Comedy (HTTM), Mark Wahlberg or Will Ferrel- Best ACtor Comedy (The Other Guys), Rhys Ifans- Best Supporting Actor (Greenberg or Harry Potter), Cillian Murphy- Best Actor or Supporting Actor (Peacock or Inception), Daft Punk- Best Score (Tron) etc.

Hell, I might add more just this week when I've seen Black Swan and 127 hours. The Best Supporting Actor this year is probably the toughest category for me but I'm sure Bale overacting his way through The Fighter will sweep the awards that folks like Ruffalo, Hawkes, Mendelsohn, Ifans, Garfield, Murphy etc deserve more.

One of the bigger jokes ...

that no one is mentioning, and rightly so b/c this is a movie site, but The Walking Dead... I dont think they even watched it. the premiere got major buzz, which carried over to the 2nd episode, then it became one of the worst shows on tv. Seriously, that show was so bad.

I was actually going to mention this, partially to see how many negs I'd get. (I gave you a thumbs up, buddy!)

But yeah... The Walking Dead was a major disappointment for me. It wasn't bad, but apart from a very promising first episode, it quickly turned into a mediocre show with high production values.

"Zomg Zombies on tv" as far as ive heard, it swayed from the novel too. it was awful, the characters all suck except the main guy. I hope the rumor of the writing staff getting the can is true, b/c they were horrible. AMC + famous director + Halloween buzz = nomination and praise. They didn't even watch the next 5 episodes.

I don't care about the big awards shows (not even the Oscars), but even I can't believe some of this crap. This Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category is a joke.

Wow! The Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy is so poor. The Kids Are Alright are sure going to win. Any other comedies could have been nominated to fill the four other spots. Couldnt have Toy Story 3 been nominated in that category ? Easy A, The Other Guys ... any other comedies from last year would have seemed a better choice than The Tourist or Burlesque.

What?!

Three out of the five movies in the musical/comedy scored BELOW %50 on Rotten Tomatoes! I mean I'm glad this guarantees a win for The Kids are All Right. But, maybe we should have pretended movies like 127 Hours and Winter's Bone and Animal Kingdom are comedies just so we could have quality flicks nominated.

Good god, the comedy...

So let me get this straight. They chose The Tourist, Burlesque, Alice in Wonderland and RED over Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Greenberg, I Love You Phillip Morris, Barney's Version, Cyrus, Four Lions and even Get Him To The Greek (to a certain extent)?!?

Dear god, it's like they're saying : "Yeah, we're giving that award to The Kids Are Alright, so who cares who we nominate besides that one?"

Good Lord...look, I like Johnny Depp as much as the next person, but given the films he's nominated for, this is slightly depressing. They should just make a "Best Johnny Depp Perfomance of the Year" category and be done with it, for crissakes.

Glad to see "Inception", "The Kids Are All Right", and "Toy Story 3", getting some noms, but I would have liked to see "The Town" get a couple more than Best Supporting Actor for Renner. I was thinking perhaps Best Director for Affleck?

I am also surprised that Mark Ruffalo was not nominated for Best Supporting Actor. He gave a great performance.

As furious and confused as I am with these best comedy/musical categories, at least it kinda guarantees that The Kids Are All Right and Annette Bening will win for best picture and actress respectively. However, who the hell is going to win for best actor? Johnny Depp is only there for red carpet appearances, I didnt think Jake G. was good enough to deserve a win this year and i havent seen Paul G or Kevin S performances this year so im at a loss.

Depp & Jolie for The Tourist? Really?!

Would someone please explain to me how one of the most critically savaged films of the year earned two nominations for its leads? Every review I've read went on and on about the lack of chemistry between Depp and Jolie, how they seemed bored with their roles and appeared to be phoning it in - how on Earth does that square with a nomination?! Oh that's right, Depp and Jolie are big stars and have each been nominated plenty of times before.

In my opinion, that's fucking pathetic of the Globes

Depp & Jolie for The Tourist? Really?!

Would someone please explain to me how one of the most critically savaged films of the year earned two nominations for its leads? Every review I've read went on and on about the lack of chemistry between Depp and Jolie, how they seemed bored with their roles and appeared to be phoning it in - how on Earth does that square with a nomination?! Oh that's right, Depp and Jolie are big stars and have each been nominated plenty of times before.

In my opinion, that's fucking pathetic of the Globes

In my opinion, that's fucking pathetic of the Globes - a nomination should not be based on star power or politics, fucking bullshit it what it is. If either of them wins than we'll know for sure that the outcome of the Globes is based upon Hollywood politics, not merit.

Am I the only one missing Leonardo DiCaprio on this list?

Ha was good in Inception too but God, wasn't his performance in Shutter Island Oscar worthy?

It's not gonna beat FIGHTER or BLACK SWAN or INCEPTION bud. There's no point if it won't win.

I kinda like that Red got a nod. They obviously low-blowed Toy Story so that Kids are Alright will get an award since TS3 clinched the animation category

Decent list...

It's a pretty good list actually despite the fact that KICK-ASS was completely snubbed (Chloe deserved a Best Supporting nod) and THE TOURIST getting any nominations is complete bullshit. The studio definitely paid for that one. And how the fuck is RED considered a comedy/musical?

HOWEVER...

Trent Reznor getting nominated for Score makes me very happy along with many other great choices.

With the exception of all the superfluous Alice in Wonderland and Johnny Depp love (they only nominated him for ratings purposes), these look pretty decent. The Musical and Comedy category doesn't matter; everyone knows that.

Wow....Just Wow

I don't think I've ever seen a worse collection of movies nominated for Best Picture together that wasn't put together by MTV. "Burlesque" "Alice In Wonderful" As Matt Damon said in "The Departed, "Are you fucking KIDDING me?" Just pure unexplainable. I mean...wow.

Having said that (and having a few drinks to accept it)...

-Glad that "Boardwalk Empire" is getting some love. It really is a great show.
-The Social Network was probably my favorite movie this year, so I'm glad that's getting

-Go "Mad Men"
-Hell, good for Michael Douglas getting sosme Gekko love. The movie wasn't outstanding, but he's just so cool. Who cares?

Eh, I'm satisfied. The musical and comedy nominations are always a joke so I don't know why people are complaining there. I'm glad to see Renner's performance on the list, I'm hoping he'll get nominated for a 2nd Oscar next month.

Yeah, I walked out of The Town praising Renner and his performance. It was easily the most memorable in the film. Good for him.

Thank God...

Justin Timberlake wasn't nominated for Social Network. That'll end his campaign for an Oscar nom.

no 127 hours or True Grit for best picture. Maybe would have helped them to open these movies nation wide instead of only in a few big cities.

The Best Picture Comedy/Musical is perhaps the worst collection of 5 films nominated at any awards show.

THE TOURIST??? it got 20% in Rotten Tomatoes, why don't you nominate SKYLINE too? TOY STORY 2 won the best comedy/musical award, and TS3 not even in the category?? Most of the animated films nominated shoud be in this category too.

The score is good but nothing compared to the other nominees. Hans or Trent will take the win.

Animated movies aren't eligible for best motion picture at the Golden Globes.

If they were, I think they should eliminate the best animated movie category, since there is no reason those movies should get an extra category of their own.

Just when award season was going so well, the Golden Globes come along and annoy me with bad taste. Since they break it up into categories like drama, musical or comedy, that leaves more room to recognize the great movies and performances of the year. But, in this case, they failed miserably.

What deserved to be nominated in my opinion...

1) Kristen Stewart. She was excellent in The Runaways.
2) The Runaways. Best movie of the year in my opinion.
3) Mia Wasikowska for The Kids Are

3) Mia Wasikowska for The Kids Are All Right. Some people have no appreciation for subtle realistic acting.
4) Winter's Bone for best drama.
5) Cyrus for best comedy.

I'm glad Jennifer Lawrence got nominated for Winter's Bone and that The Kids Are All Right is nominated for best comedy. Other than that, I'm offended by this list of nominees.

See, this is why I can't take the Golden Globes seriously anymore. Alice in Wonderland and RED??!!!! Come on. I didn't know that Jolie would be nominated for a movie that just came out this past weekend. Looks like there aren't enough movies to be given nominations. While we're at it, let's put the A-Team in best comedy or musical.

Obligatory nods for Jolie and Depp in a widely reviled movie. And I'm amused that it's categorized under "Musical or Comedy." I would guess that any laughs from that movie were unintentional.

It is beyond belief that Toy Story 3 isnt nominated for best movie. What the hell? And why is no one giving John Hawkes any love for his brilliant performance in Winter's Bone. I am happy to see Emma Stone nominated for Easy A. Really wonderful movie and the first great performance in what will be a long career.

What I don't understand is how Burlesque, The Tourist, Red and Alice in Wonderland can all be nominated for Best Picture Comedy/Musical and Toy Story 3 and How to Train Your Dragon can't, that's just inexcusable.
