Joe Carnahan, director of The Grey, will grant your Death Wish

Not too long ago we shared with you some of the projects that director Joe Carnahan (THE GREY, THE A-TEAM, NARC) is gearing up to do, but now another has come down the pipeline which sounds rather interesting. I think. See, Carnahan has been hired by studios MGM and Paramount to write and direct a remake of the 1974 movie DEATH WISH, a movie that starred Charles Bronson as the ultimate no-nonsense vigilante and spawned four sequels. The movie has officially been called a reboot, and will be further financed by Scott Free, the company owned by Tony and Ridley Scott.

"An MGM spokeswoman and a Carnahan representative did not immediately have a comment" says the report, but there it is.  "According to a person familiar with the project who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak about it publicly," there is a pretty good chance that Carnahan is doing DEATH WISH as one of his next projects.  And by the way, you should go see the original if you haven't already. The run time isn't too bad, it's a lean and mean re-telling of the conflict between "justice" and "the justice system," and you get to see a young Jeff Goldblum be one nasty piece of work.  Which are all good things in my book.

DeathWishPoster

A plot synopsis for the original DEATH WISH: "[Bronson stars as] Paul Kersey, a liberal architect who morphs into an assassin after his wife and daughter are brutally attacked. Bronson's character then undertakes a one-man mission to hurt and kill a host of criminals on the streets of New York."

Extra Tidbit: Carnahan has already talked about reuniting with Liam Neeson on other projects - should they do so for this one too? Or would you go with someone more... unexpected?

at extra-tidbit..

I think we've had enough ass-kicking from Liam Neeson... For now.
As for someone unexpected I was thinking Richard Gere (no, seriously). Imagine his 'burnt out' cop character from Brooklyn's Finest was turned upside-down and said 'fuck the system!'.
My other choice, if this is to be made into fun hard-hitting popcorn flick, would be John Malkovich... And you do not MESS with Malkovich :D

the synopsis sounds like death sentence with Kevin Bacon

a completely out of the box choice would be Jim Carrey. He's already proven he can do drama. Liam is the obvious choice, but I would almost rather see a not so obvious choice, but that can be risky.

not sure how this can be done

but one thing I think Carnahan will do is make it DIFFERENT from the original, which is what every remake should do. So with that, hell why not, keepin an eye on this now!

even though we already have enough revenge movies

we still need another remake of one? either way in the hands of carnahan, it'll be the shit, but why do we need another revenge movie, and a remake of one on top of that?

oh wow this is a tough one to swallow, Carnahan is a great director but we do not need any more remakes especially to Death Wish. Please don't become a Hollywood sellout Mr. Carnahan

don't know, i just don't know. not worried about the original being 'tarnished', i mean they made a million of these things. i'm more concerned about them being able to find someone in the same league as mr. bronson

Enjoy life in prison, Shafias!

Not sure how I feel about this, it all depends on the execution (heh-heh-heh) but I'd love to see Albert Brooks in the Charles Bronson role. He looks like the last guy you'd expect to go psycho but Drive showed he can bring a lot of menace.

To be honest if there was one popular movie that I felt needed to be remade it was Death Wish.

In a perfect world they would give the lead role to Micheal Rooker but know that's never going to happen.

I thought Liam Neeson already did a remake of Death Wish. I was called "Every movie Neeson has done in the past 5 years".

Other than Taken, please list any other movie that Liam Neeson has done that was even REMOTELY similar to Death Wish. You're an idiot.

Thanks Paul. Yes it was a joke. Similar in vein to when Bill Maher said every movie Liam Neeson makes from now on should be titled "I'm going to hunt you down a kill you." But thanks for playing, Jay.

Would rather see Carnahan finally make "Killing Pablo" or "White Jazz" instead of doing this unnecessary remake. But Im sure if they did it, it would be entertaining enough espcially with Nesson.

Maybe Clive Owen for the lead?

Joe Carnahan can do no wrong in my book.

He can do no wrong ? I haven't seen The Grey, but beside that, he's only made one above-average movie.

I would like Carnahan for the director if this should come to pass. Absolutely not with Neeson if it does.

To be quite honest, I'd be curious to see someone actually be able to pull this off. It's a deceptively simple story, but considering that the main character basically goes psycho (albeit justifiably), it's not exactly your typical revenge story. And it would require the right leading man. Also, if they stay true to the original and don't ACTUALLY take revenge on the miscreants who

I don't know how to feel about this. I love the original, but I feel like its legacy was tarnished a bit by a myriad of awful sequels.
Carnahan is a great director, so hopefully this won't just be a typical Hollywood cash-grab remake.

Goddamnit

I don't care that the film is being remade since I'm not a fan of the original, but I am mad that Carnahan isn't doing another original film and instead a stupid fucking remake. Boooo, I say....

I'd love to see what Joe Carnahan can do with this project. I'm a big fan of his works. However, I don't know if reuniting with Liam Neeson is a good idea. Don't get me wrong. I love to see Neeson kicks arses but it'd be too much like his role in "Taken".
