The guys who wrote The Smurfs movie will write the Popeye movie

Nov. 3, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Remember that SMURFS movie with Neil Patrick Harris that you didn't see? Well, those guys that wrote it will be writing the big screen version of POPEYE.

Jay Scherick and David Ronn are on board to pen the script for the sailor man. Sony Pictures announced that the writing duo would get started on a new POPEYE adventure that would obviously hit the screen in 3D. There are no plot details here but of course it will involve Popeye, Olive Oyl, Wimpy, Bluto, and Swee'Pea. At least I hope it will.

Michelle Raimo Kouyate, head of productions for Sony Pictures said this about the film and writers, "Were thrilled that Jay and Dave are helping us reintroduce Popeye to a new generation. Their take on the world of Popeye has just the right blend of comedy, adventure and heart all the elements that made a great animated film."

Avi Arad (SPIDER-MAN) will produce on this and shared his cherish memories of the character, "Popeye has been my childhood favorite character. To me he was always the everyday man who gets special powers and actually becomes the first superhero in the best meaning of the word. When Scott Sassa called, Ari and I were beyond excited to be working with Jay Scherick & David Ronn and Sony Pictures Animation to bring this iconic character to the big screen in glorious stereoscopic 3D. We enjoy working with the Sony Pictures Animation team and with Rocky and company from Hearst Publishing. I cannot wait to go sailing!"

Are you ready to go sailing?

Spicy Popeye!

Not going to watch The Smurfs. You couldn't smurfin' make me watch that smurfin' pile if you tried. Why would anyone who actually cared about the source material get THOSE guys to do it? I imagine it is all about the cash grab...in which case the main character will eschew spinach this go round and get his "special powers" from spicy chicken and biscuits.

Not sure if this will end up being a good idea or not. wonder if any of them have seen the original Popeye film with Robin Williams? Robin was a PERFECT Popeye! They should get him to play Popeye's dad!

F-that

The original Fleischer brothers popeye is so visually cool. Get someone who can homage that! Don't straight corny.
Lame.
Perhaps at least it'll motivate some cool kids to seek out the original source.

I don't know if its a good or bad thing, but I can tell which articles Niki writes without reading the by line....

I don't know how they can make Popeye relates to modern audiences. Heck, kids nowadays only know Ben 10 and some crazy card-dueling stuffs. They probably wouldn't know who Popeye is.

I disagree, my son is 6, and he loves Popeye and Tom & Jerry. You don't have to make it high tech to make it enjoyable.

"...In a surprising turn of events, the scriptwriters are reimagining 'Popeye' as a serious "edgy" drama about a sailor trying to overcome his addiction to spinach..."

Gad dammit!

I'd first like to say that I am a fan of the Robert Altman movie, with all the flaws it has. And I'm not ideologically opposed to another Popeye movie for another generation. But I AM very opposed to anyone who brought us Smurfs, Yogi Bear, Alvin and the Chipmunks, or Garfield, being let anywhere near the one-eyed sailor man with a speech impediment.

There is a right way to do Popeye. And it could even be cgi, as long as it respects the world. If not another live-action affair, maybe

I'll admit, I didn't even read the article. But F*CK C'mon! Is there seriously no more ideas?! I bet that some of us even have better ideas than 85 percent of the shit that has come out recently. And I say this because as a true movie lover like most of you, I know that if I have some good ideas, that you guys do too. We just don't have the opportunities or utensils to present these ideas to those that truly matter.
