The guys who wrote The Smurfs movie will write the Popeye movie
Remember that SMURFS movie with Neil Patrick Harris that you didn't see? Well, those guys that wrote it will be writing the big screen version of POPEYE.
Jay Scherick and David Ronn are on board to pen the script for the sailor man. Sony Pictures announced that the writing duo would get started on a new POPEYE adventure that would obviously hit the screen in 3D. There are no plot details here but of course it will involve Popeye, Olive Oyl, Wimpy, Bluto, and Swee'Pea. At least I hope it will.
Michelle Raimo Kouyate, head of productions for Sony Pictures said this about the film and writers, "We’re thrilled that Jay and Dave are helping us reintroduce Popeye to a new generation. Their take on the world of Popeye has just the right blend of comedy, adventure and heart — all the elements that made a great animated film."
Avi Arad (SPIDER-MAN) will produce on this and shared his cherish memories of the character, "Popeye has been my childhood favorite character. To me he was always the everyday man who gets special powers and actually becomes the first superhero in the best meaning of the word. When Scott Sassa called, Ari and I were beyond excited to be working with Jay Scherick & David Ronn and Sony Pictures Animation to bring this iconic character to the big screen in glorious stereoscopic 3D. We enjoy working with the Sony Pictures Animation team and with Rocky and company from Hearst Publishing. I cannot wait to go sailing!"
