The Hangover director Todd Phillips does a John Belushi biopic

08.11.2010

Considering his first big hit OLD SCHOOL was a spiritual cousin to ANIMAL HOUSE, director Todd Phillips would seem like a good match for a movie about hard-living funnyman John Belushi.

Warner Bros. has the late comedian's life rights and has given writer Steven Conrad (THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS) the assignment to bring the former SNL star and Blues Brother back to the screen in a new skin. Belushi's widow Judith will also be an exec producer on the project.

Phillips' HANGOVER and DUE DATE star Zack Galiafinakis is a bit too old for the part (Belushi died of an overdose at 33), but THR throws out a few names they think could handle the role, including Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Ethan Suplee and Tyler Labine. Although personally, I think a slightly slimmed-down Jorge Garcia ("Lost") would be a perfect fit, dude.

Extra Tidbit: "The Shield" star Michael Chiklis portrayed Belushi in the 1989 biopic WIRED.

What About

Artie Lange should be the only one to play the role. We need to move on beyond Seth Green and Jonah Hill by the way.

Jim Belushi

I think the perfect casting for a biopic of John Belushi's life would be his own brother. Jim Belushi looks like John, so it would literally be like watching John play himself. Jim Belushi has also filled in for John as the other Blues Brother with Dan Ackroyd in its revived form. I also think he is a capable actor and would do his brother justice. Think about it: they grew up together. What better preparation can you receive for a role than being around the subject for 18 years and then

Further proof that Jim Belushi would be well suited for the role: he worked with his brother for 3 years (1977 to 1980) in a theatre group called The Second City. This is further proof that he was very close with his brother and his experience working with him as well could result in a brilliant portrayal. In my opinion, the film makers needs to contact Jim and offer him the role early, because he deserves a shot to play this role.

Jeremy Renner

I had to google his name - had forgotten it already! Anyway, I kept thinking all through 'The Hurt Locker' that he looked a bit like John Belushi. It was really distracting.

I'm down for this, but please do not cast Hill or Rogen. They're talented actors, but not something for this. I really like the idea of Artie Lange.

Out There Suggestion

I have a really out there suggestion. How about Kevin Smith. The man has the energy, charisma, & even the same body type.

No that I like Artie Lange particularly, but for appearances, at least, he'd be just about perfect.

Of the names up there, oddly enough, I think Galifianakis might be the best choice. Wouldn't be the first time an actor played someone significantly younger than himself. If they get Jonah Hill for this thing you can count me out. And I don't even think Rogen would want to do it.

Me!

I was a chubster a few years back and was often compared to Belushi. Some saw it as insulting me. I took it as a compliment, the man was a genius.

Even though Jorge Garcia is by far the best choice, at least out of the otherwise nauseating list of actors mentioned above, to possibly pass for an APPEARANCE-based recreation of the great man, this is a bad plan because, quite simply, there WILL NEVER be another John Belushi. Nobody has his charm, charisma, grace, AND humor in that particular configuration. No, sorry, this is a good idea, a sweet one, but unfortunately, it's a bad plan.

Jorge Garcia isn't right. The guy gained weight while stranded on an island. He'd have to lose over 100 pounds probably, and even after that, I'm pretty sure he's not a very good actor. I could see Jonah Hill, Jack Black, or Tyler Labine doing well in the role though.

Ethan Suplee

IDK about this but if they do it, Ethan Suplee.
Give him a chance.

I really liked the irreverent bio pic about John Belushi's life -"Wired" 1989? I like the idea of doing an updated version of John Belushi's life/death. Jack Black-not really a look a like-but in make up and some minor appliance work... I think he would ace this role!

Bad idea, but if they're gonna do it...

I'm not real keen on this since Belushi is such a comedy icon and the last biopic didn't go over so well (Michael Chiklis played him in a reviled early-'90s flick that was boycotted by Belushi's friends and family), but if they're seriously going ahead with this project...then Galifianakis is the only one of those actors you mentioned who could pull it off - simply because he's actually a good actor. Nothing against Rogen or Hill per se, but I honestly just don't see them tapping into the

Who cares if he's a couple years older? It wouldn't be the first time an actor portrayed a younger/older person.

I'm a big John Belushi fan, I've got his greatest SNL hits on DVD. I'm on the fence about this project, especially if any of those actors mentioned are cast. Not that they are bad actors, but I don't see them as Belushi. I'm guessing the movie is going for a "Man on the Moon" type feel, and I'm not sure Todd Phillips would be my first pick for that. Right now, I'm not sure I like this idea.

as a filmmaker who is stillw aiting for his Hollywood break, one of my dream projects that I want to do is the Biopic of Chris Farley (As he is one of my Idols in life). So this is good news that Belushi is getting a Biopic and hopefully it does well. My only fear is that we may get a Farley biopic before it is ME who is making it!

No offense but....

I'm pretty sure Chris Farley already starred in John Bushi's lifestory, except there weren't any cameras....and he did his own stunts.

I don't know about this. The casting will be about 90% of what will make the movie work, and I'm not sure they'll be able to find someone to fill Belushi's shoes.
