The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey sees the reveal of its runtime and five great Empire magazine covers

Oct. 25, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 656 title

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY is the gift that just keeps on giving this fall season.

Not only as film magazine Empire released hi-res looks at their five fantastic HOBBIT-themed covers, but the interview with Peter Jackson contained within has revealed the approximate runtime for the film.  I say "approximate" because Jackson pointed out that there are a few effects shots still to be finished that might, once done, alter that running time a wee bit (not to mention the no-doubt massive credits).

Bearing that in mind, many of you will be happy to know that the first part of Bilbo's original adventure is "looking like it’s going to be about ten minutes shorter than Fellowship was.  So it’s going to be officially our shortest Middle-earth yet. I mean, Fellowship was just under three hours and this is about 2 hours 40 minutes at the moment.”

So there's that, and here are the covers!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Empire cover 1

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Empire cover 2

The Hobbit: AN Unexpected Journey Empire cover 3

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Empire cover 4

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Empire cover 5

Extra Tidbit: Which is the one cover to rule them all? I vote the one with Gandalf. The colors and composition of that cover are just too damn beautiful for me to ignore.

The Gandalf cover is also on the new Hobbit app on iPhone/iPad but the pic is in moveable 3D. It's really cool. You tilt the iPad side to side and Gandalf moves and the leaves fall. As for the runtime, can't wait.... The longer I get to stay in Middle Earth the better. This will be the last time we get to visit this place. That's why Jackson has extended it to 3 films coz there's more bits of Middle Earth history he wants to share with us and he is using The Hobbit story as a vehicle to tell

There is no other way. He couldn't make a movie that would flow out of all these bits unless he incorporated them into The Hobbit story. He knocked Lotr out of the park so I trust him with this. He will deliver.

WTF?

LORD OF THE RINGS = 3 books = 3 movies (3 hours each)
THE HOBBIT = 1 BOOK = 3 movies = ALMOST 3 HOURS??? probably the other 2 flicks are going to run the same or more. Lets face it, Hollywood is robbing you guys. Its great to not even care about this saga like I do!

Your ignorance is impressive.

First of all THE LORD OF THE RINGS = ONE novel, released as SIX books, eventually published in a swanky three-volume set YEARS LATER.

Now, just so you know...the Hobbit is a CHILDREN'S book. And while its not nearly as wordy or descriptive as LotR, its every bit as epic in scope if not MORE SO.

The Lord of the Rings movies are actually closer to 4 hours each on the average and there are still die hards out there pissed off that PJ had to cut out so much

I seriously thought Galadriel was giving the finger when I first glanced at her cover.

The Gandalf poster is pretty awesome and that doesn't look like Cate Blanchett for some reason.
Sooo...the rough cut of an Unexpected Journey before the 3 film split was 4 1/2 hours?
