The Hobbit has a Bard, and the dragon Smaug has a voice

06.16.2011

THE HOBBIT has found another hero -- actor Luke Evans (TAMARA DREWE) will play Bard, the brave bird-listening bowman who faces the deadly dragon known as Smaug.

Speaking of which, that great scaly beast now has a voice: British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of BBC's "Sherlock" (Bilbo himself, Martin Freeman, plays his Watson on the show). Cumberbatch recently slipped his involvement in THE HOBBIT without revealing the character. (Bill Nighy was previously rumored to provide Smaug's rumbling voice).

Cumberbatch, recently seen on stage in Danny Boyle's production of Frankenstein, will provide motion capture for the dragon, and is also providing the voice of Necromancer, the spirit form of Sauron. He'll next be seen in Steven Spielberg's WAR HORSE and the all-star update of the epsionage story TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY.

Evans will soon be seen in Paul WS Anderson's silly-looking 3D version of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, and Tarsem Singh's grand god battle IMMORTALS.

Peter Jackson's 3D adaptation(s) THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY arrives on December 14, 2012, with THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN following on December 13, 2013.

The epic tale features Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O'Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner. Returning players include Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis.

Extra Tidbit: Evans was one of the (many) actors in the running for THE BOURNE LEGACY, which went to Jeremy Renner.

These were the last two BIG parts to be cast. Color me underwhelmed. And which Dickens work did CUMBERSNATCH escape from? Sheesh...

Minor complaint.

I think Nighy would have made a better Smaug voice. And I don't know why they need the same guy for 2 voices. One minor thing I didn't like about LOTR was how they got John-Rhys Davies to voice Treebeard when he was already playing Gimli, they just sounded too similar. I hope this guy can make the voices different enough. Still, I find it hard to believe they couldn't find or afford someone else to do the voice.

Agreed, still they were both pretty great voices. But too similar indeed. I also have a minor complaint about the dwarf makeup, it looked a bit too caked on, too messy. Hope Weta tweaks the dwarf design a bit this time.

It's *Cumberbatch*, actually.

As for the news, well done Luke Evans - he's done quite well for himself lately. Whoever his agent is, he's earning his 10%.

Cumberbatch for Smaug?! He must have one heck of a voice in his young throat...Well Jackson has proved himself very good at casting his Tolkien actors, so I guess he's got to be trusted.

I'll judge when I actually hear him as Smaug.

The first time I watched Sherlock I was actually really surprised by Cumberbatch's voice. I wasn't expecting it to be so powerful and deep. So I am definitely hip to this news and think he is a very good match for Smaug.

I was certain Leonard Nimoy had already been confirmed as Smaug.
I'm sure Cumberbatch will do great... but he's no Nimoy...

But wasn't it Martin Freeman who mistakenly 'outed' Cumberbatch as being in the Hobbit? However, he's good in Sherlock so will be interesting how his voice work goes. I mean if it's half as good as Freeman's take on Ian Holmes' Bilbo, we can't complain. I'm still more curious how the tone of the film will be 'cause they are retrofitting a children's book to fit the tone of the LOTR movies.

After listening to a few interviews with Cumberbatch on youtube, I approve! He has a surprisingly deep voice, and that clever sounding english accent! love it!

WAIT!

How the fuck is that not Orlando Bloom up there? Isn't he in the Three Musketeers also? What the hell is going on, is this a doppleganger? If I am the only one that sees it, does it fall to me to slay this sinister beast of flesh and deception?
