The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies extended edition gets an R-rating

Earlier this week, it was announced that extended editions of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy will begin screening in theaters on October 5, 2015. Besides being half an hour longer than the original theatrical version, THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES extended cut has also earned an R-rating by the MPAA for "some violence." There's no word on if Warner Home Video is planning on appealing the rating, or if this goes for both the home release and theatrical run of the new version.

Since the extended editions of the first two Hobbit flicks (as well as The Lord of the Rings trilogy) were rated PG-13, I'm a bit surprised that THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES has been awarded an R-rating. There's speculation though that some of the death scenes might be a little bit more gruesome compared to the original cut. Are you eager to see what Peter Jackson has added to the final installment in The Hobbit series, now that it has received an R-rating?

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES extended edition will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on November 3, 2015.

I have mixed feelings. As much as I love studios taking more chances by releasing R-rated movies, The Hobbit is really a children's book, and an R rating feels jarring and out-of-place here. Too bad they didn't think of this for Return of the King though. An R-rated Pelennor Fields battle would be kind of awesome.

You know what would get my ass to theaters for an R rated The Hobbit trilogy? It's if they dub all the voices with Ice Cube.

I think they'l appeal...

...with lots of money, like they did with the feloowship of the ring! They had to cut back Bopromir's death top avoid an R rating, yet the full scene does appear in the pg13 rated extended edition. So I'm guessing a simiiar situation will unfold here. Though here in the Netherlands all the extendended LOTR cuts are R rated, because we are much srtricter with violence here. Much easier with sex and language though! Movies like There's something About Mary and American Pie would never get

not surprised

while you mentioned the LOTR and Hobbit movies were rated PG-13. I remember that the FOTR movie got slapped with an unrated for the extended because legolas shot more consecutive arrows in the Uruks and more limbs went flying off. So that is probably all that this is.Nothing blatant and overt.
