The Hunger Games breaks advance tickets record, besting Twilight

02.23.2012

Fandango is reporting that ticket sales for THE HUNGER GAMES have been staggering, and the film has sold out hundreds of showtimes even though it's a month off from release. In fact, it's the biggest first-day ticket-seller the site has ever seen, beating a record that THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE set on Friday, May 14th 2010.

"THE HUNGER GAMES is off to a fantastic start," says Rick Butler, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Fandango. "Yesterday we saw the biggest first day advance ticketing sales in our company's nearly 12-year history – which is especially impressive for a March release and a non-sequel."

Tickets for the film went on sale yesterday and as theaters sell out theater owners keep adding more and more showtimes- I notice a theater near me has four midnight screenings happening already.

It's looking more and more possible that Lionsgate might just have that franchise that they've been looking for all these years! Everyone I know is picking up those books and while I have yet to read them myself I will, soon... despite my love of "Battle Royale".

At this rate it seems like the sequels are a done deal.

I just had to cover 35,000 shares I had shorted on HSX. Not the brightest idea I've ever had. I thought sure it was over-hyped.

That type of record keep being broken simply because more people become aware that they can buy their tickets online, also there is an actual marketing campaign announcing when the tickets will be available.

Also, they should start counting the box-office numbers with the number of ticket sold, not how much money a movie made. There would be no issues with 3D or Imax tickets or inflation for that matter. Oh well...

Considering that this film appeals to a wider audience than Twilight (boys), I am sure it will hopefully do better at the box office. Maybe not opening weekend, but total gross.

Cool, this looks like a pretty decent flick, its nice to see 12 years old spend their pocket money on a movie that looks worthwhile for a change.
