The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Star Trek 2 get the IMAX treatment

Jun. 13, 2012by: Paul Shirey

This shouldn't be much of a surprise, but the official word is that both STAR TREK 2 and THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are getting the IMAX treatment, with STAR TREK 2 also being in IMAX 3D.

“We were so thrilled with the creative results of shooting IMAX for Mission: Impossible that we jumped at the chance to use the format for Star Trek. All expectations were exceeded — the action and resolution is insane at this scale. We cannot wait for audiences to see the crew of the Enterprise in a way they never have before,” said J.J. Abrams.

For THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE, it was announced that director Francis Lawrence (I AM LEGEND) will be shooting specific scenes with IMAX cameras with the rest of the film being digitally remastered in the format.

"We are thrilled to continue the productive partnership we enjoyed with Imax on the first installment of THE HUNGER GAMES,"  Lionsgate motion picture group co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger said Wednesday.

I've heard arguments both for and against IMAX.  Personally, I dig it.  It's not meant for every movie, but seeing PROMETHEUS and THE AVENGERS in IMAX was a pretty thrilling theater-going experience and I expect no less from THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. It's not like we don't have the choice to NOT see it in IMAX...

STAR TREK 2 opens in both tradtiional and IMAX® 3D format on May 17, 2013 and THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE opens in both traditional and IMAX on November 22, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: What old school movie would you most like to see in IMAX? Me, I'd kill for some original Die Hard or Predator. What do you got?

IMAX has unparalleled sound and picture quality, but there's a very limited area of the seats where you can get a good view, you can't be too far off centre, too far to the back or too far to the front. Well yeah, it applies to normal theatres too, but I found that I've had a much harder time aligning my head to watch a 3D film in IMAX than a 3D film in a regular theatre, if I move my head an inch the picture goes blurry. Don't know if anyone else experiences this.

I would kill for a remastered view of Mad Max (particularly the 2nd one) on IMAX.

BTW Alien and Aliens too...

UGH, I'm all for IMAX but IMAX 3D is lame! I wish I could see this in IMAX without a horribly manipulated and headache inducing depth of field. I'm glad Nolan stuck to his guns so that I can see Dark Knight Rises in true IMAX.
