With a budget reportedly close to $45 million, it’s easy to see why the current earnings of Sony’s THE INTERVIEW might raise more than a few eyebrows. The controversial movie was eventually put on streaming sites and VOD this past Christmas and since then has gone on to make an unprecedented $31 million in sales in just two weeks!  Add on the $2.9 million from the box office and you’re smiling even more.

The Seth Rogen-James Franco film has been rented or purchased online and VOD more than 4.3 million times, more than any movie ever. I can’t imagine huge DVD/Blu-ray sales considering a lot of people own it now after their online purchase, but maybe there is another audience waiting for the home release to push it into the black. I watched the movie and thought it was on par with recent comedies Rogen and friends. I laughed and that's what's important. Check out Alex's positive review here!

Do you think the movie will become profitable? Do you foresee studios taking notice of these numbers for future releases?

Good that this movie is going to scrape its budget back, but have you seen the figures on how much this movie has been pirated? All of the torrents for this movie out there have easily been downloaded more than it's been paid-streamed. As soon as you release a movie on VOD, it's out there for free. Simple as that. I don't think VOD is ever going to be a viable option for big-budget movies until long after the theatrical release.

They should do this more often. Steven Soderbergh has been saying this for nearly a decade. Sure some smaller films will have a VOD and Limited Release but someone needs to test the waters on a full out release, paid stream/download, VOD. Sure 5-6 bucks is less than 10-12 a ticket but it's also better than it being stolen and not seeing a penny.

I think the studio would take notice how this movie turns out financially. I wouldn't say releasing theatrically would be totally dead but to release movies theatrically and other platforms (video on demand) simultaneously are viable.

Watched this on Sunday on my PS4 for $6.99, and will gladly be forking over the $25 for the Blu-Ray when it comes out.

Glad to see that something positive came out of all of this controversy. Film was funny and glad to see it making its budget back.
