by: Mike Sampson Mar. 7, 2010

As promised, we'll be liveblogging the Oscars this year on JoBlo.com! This could prove to be especially helpful for New York readers who have lost ABC on their TVs due to a dispute with Cablevision. The live blog will begin at 7:30pm EST in this very spot! I'll be joined by our critic Chris Bumbray and JoBlo Podcast co-host Johnny Moreno and we'll bring it to you as it happens.

Did any of you Anti-Hurt Locker ranters even watch the movie? Politics don't have anything to do with Avatar being a mediocre film. That's why it lost. A technical achievement, sure. That's why it won in the technical categories.

HURT LOCKER!!
Finally Avatar gets put in its place as a ok scifi action flick that is only god in 3D. Try watching it in 2D and I beet you walk out, cause I did. A movie shouldn't win because of its effect, it should have an important story to tell and be entertaining without having to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on effects.. Way to go "Hurt Locker" it was defiantly the best film of the year!!!!

Is it just me that Alec Baldwin is actually funnier than Steve Martin? Just a thought, still a good Award show though.

I thought they both were hilarious. I have been a fan of Steve Martin forever so even just his silly facial expressions were cracking me up.

I actually did enjoy Martin and Baldwin as hosts. It was classic humor. Also, very impressed with the John Hughs tribute.

I'll agree that the academy all too often snubs action/sci-fi films, but anyone who thinks Avatar deserved the win over Hurt Locker is kidding themselves. Kudos for Up and Michael Giacchino for his great score. But that interpretive dance over the score nominees was laughably bad.

I will respectfully disagree with you. Avatar is a once a decade kina movie, and HL felt like just another war movie, but with less shooting.

They will both live on in different ways. But if you would really like to dispute what film will stand the test of time, I can assure you in 25 years as technology has progressed far beyond what Avatar has done, all that will be left is a mediocre script and unintentional laughs from the bland dialogue and characters.

HURT LOCKER!!! So Happy about the Oscars this year. I Loved Avatar but let's face it, deep down I knew The Hurst Locker was gonna pull threw. THE HURT LOCKER was overated. 7/10. All the scenes with the bombs and the action scenes were great. The rest of the scenes were just filler.

Regarding the show, what the hell was up with that jewish lady cuttin off that black guy who won for Best Documentary SHort?

As for that bitchy jewish women, she was a producer who got kicked of the project and decided to steal all of the spotlight and attention that the film was getting. I am strongly against hitting women, but if I was this director I would of socked her right in the face.

How was The Hurt Locker any less or more anti-war than Saving Private Ryan? Give specific examples because I can see absolutely no way to back up this argument.

Mo'nique's speech started out uncomfortable, awkward & should not have been said.

Other than that - where'd Neil Patrick Harris go? He should've been the host, after that great opening number.

Should have been Inglourious Basterds
How disappointing. They talk and talk about how it's all about the story, yet they give the Best Picture prize to a movie that has barely any story at all. I just don't get it.

It is a movie that needs a frame of reference to identify with and that doesn't neccesarily have to be military experience.

I didn't find anything about THL to be anti-war. Maybe on a purely "it damages soldiers" level (which is absolutely true), but it wasn't political in the least in regards to the war it portrayed.

Very lame year. Avatar was out of the race being a action/sci fi film, so the academy had to ressurect a bomb in the hurt locker to have something they deemed worthy.

Any other year it would be strugglign to be nominated.

Overall a very weak year, obviously they didn't want to give it to Avatar, so found a small film to give it too, a true hollywood ending, awww...

One thing we can all agree on: Baldwin and Martin were awful. The writing was terrible, and their presence was full of awkward delivery and poor chemistry.

At least they won't be back next year. Hopefully the writers won't be either.

I have a theory about The Hurt locker.

I have a theory about The Hurt locker.

The Academy got together to pick the monimees this year and saw they had a bunch of good films, but no stand out. Obviously Avatar was the stand out but the Academy never has, and probably never will, give it to a action/sci-fi movie.

So they had a problem, no real stand out film. So they looked back at small films that were overlooked and found: The Hurt locker. A film that had some good reviews and bombed hard upon release and slipped into obscurity.

What better film for the acedemy to ressurect? But wait, its directed by a woman, that'll prove the academy aren't anti-female. But wait, she was married to another best director nominee. Holy Shit, this is gonna bump up the ratings if we play as a 'battle of the exs' type thing. Hell yeah... Now to justify all this, lets nominate it for a huge bunch of awards it really doesn't deserve. By doing that all the academy memebrs who haven't seen it (which is most of them) will just assume its really really good. And of course thats whats happens. You have a VERY different psychology watching a film that you know has bombed vs a film you know is nominated for 9 oscars... when you know its up for 9 awards you see it differently, you see it as a better film.

Thats the problem this year, no clear stand out and a small film that's being pushed way above its fighting weight.

Your argument is illogical. The Hurt Locker did not bomb, it was a limited release, and a successful limited release at that. It had a lack of solid marketing if anything. If the Academy didn't want to prove itself to be anti-female they would have given it to Sofia Copolla for Lost in Translation. Your argument is illogical. The Hurt Locker did not bomb, it was a limited release, and a successful limited release at that. It had a lack of solid marketing if anything. If the Academy didn't want to prove itself to be anti-female they would have given it to Sofia Copolla for Lost in Translation. Also, this is your opinion and the opinion of many other people when The Hurt Locker was first released was that it was an undisputed masterpiece. That with the right push, it could go all the way to the Oscars. And bumping up the ratings? If nobody saw The Hurt Locker, how would anything having to do with it bump up ratings? Avatar & The Blind Side bump ratings because the Average Joe know what it is. I agree when a film is hyped up you have a different outlook going into it, but The Hurt Locker was winning accolades and rave reviews well before the Oscars. It happened to stick around throughout the year, generating buzz simply because most people thought it was an amazing film. You may not have liked it and that's fine but all you're doing now is masking your bitterness with a bullshit theory.

Precious for adapted screenplay??? That was by far the weakest nominee in that category. Jason Reitman should feel wronged.

Christoph Walz for the win. Loved his expression. Just wanted to say thanks to the people who tried to help me watch the Oscars with ABC down. ABC went up nine minutes in to the ceremony, so I didn't miss much at all. Thanks again guys.

I pushing for Tarantino to walk away with either Best Picture or Best Director; I'm also hoping Christopher Plummer does not rob the Best Supporting Actor out from underneath Christoph Waltz.
