The Kung Fu Kid

03.30.2009

Jackie Chan Jackie Chan recently spoke to "3News" about his career so far and his wish to be more of an "actor who fights" rather than a "fighter who acts" and in between his musings, he let it slip that the title for the upcoming KARATE KID remake, in which he'll be playing Daniel-san's wise mentor Mr. Miyagi, has been titled THE KUNG FU KID. Why? Because it's more relevant to the times or sounds more hip or whatever the hell the marketing or production team reasoned would be a good reason to change the name. Of course, this is only for those of you who are still interested in this remake after learning Big Willie Smith's son, Jaden, has been cast as the titular Kid. Check out the rest of the interview over HERE. Chan's acting chops will next be on display in the action drama THE SHINJUKU INCIDENT.

Extra Tidbit: Jackie's real name is Kong-sang Chan.

There's a difference...

between remaking a CHEESY 80's movie and remaking a masterpiece, sorry guys...

P.S.: Hey, they called it Kung fu kid perhaps because it'll be set in China, and because Jackie is a little more known for his kung fu comedies rather than for his karate flicks?

Does not even has Karate

so it isn't a remake. They should just make everything new and be it.

Sorry, the original was fine. No need for a remake.

Well, at least this sounds less like a straight-up remake now.

But it still sucks that Jackie Chan's agent has lowered him to mentor roles now.

was karate kid really that great?!

i mean, i loved it when i was a child...

but if i had never seen it before and saw it for the first time today, i'd probably think it sucked. i mean... its really predictable, has some terrible acting ("GET A BODY BAG!!!"), and abruptly ends.

Sweep The Leg.

The only way this could possibly be any good is if William Zabka shows up and kicks everyones ass.

At least the producers are going a different route with the title.

garbage

The Karate Kid is a movie that needs no remake. What's wrong with it? NOTHING. This movie is going to suck huge donkey balls. Jackie Chan movies are awful, I don't care if he can jump through a moving car window unscathed. Movies aren't the circus...there has to be more than that.

Most people don't realize that Jackie Chan is a very smart man. He can speak seven languages, and he's a Kung Fu master. I'm glad that he's not retiring anytime soon. I'm down with any movie that he's in.

Thank you mtg17,

I was about to write exactly the same!
Apparently we are the only true Martial Art experts around here ;o) The title change is only logical.
That being said, I loved the original but there were just regular martial arts movies with no big originality to it. So what, if they refresh it a bit for the next generation? And at least Jackie Chan could be a real Kung Fu Master.

First it distances itself from the original film, which is a good thing. But more sensibly Jackie Chan is chinese and kung fu is chinese. Karate is japanese and Pat Morita was japanese.

At least we don't have to hear everyone say "RAPING MY CHILDHOOD" as much. Even if this movie sounds fucking awful.

Just bring the original back to theaters. I will see it twice.

You know what, since they're changing the title and a bunch of other stuff already, they might as well just, gee I dunno, make their own flick instead of re-making a classic. Anyone else with me?

On the bright side it avoids confusion and anger over whatever signature moves they decide to omit.

Really? It sounds like The studio is reallly shooting for a lot younger audience. And this should never be associated with the original film. In fact, I'd bet they just want to bank off the success of Kung Fu Panda. Hell it sounds like a cartoon more and more every day.
