The Legend of Conan isn't happening, says writer

04.06.2017

Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger has been back into full-time acting mode for a few years now, and since his return fans have been clamoring for his return to famous roles, like The Terminator or Conan the Barbarian. His return in TERMINATOR: GENISYS didn’t go over too well, but fans still had hope for THE LEGEND OF CONAN.  But, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Conan won’t be conquering anything it turns out.

While talking with EW about next week’s THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS, writer Chris Morgan (who was working on a script from Will Beall) shared an update on the movie, informing them that the studio has decided to go another way:

Not so much. That’s kind of a longer story. At the end of the day, the studio decided that they weren’t gonna make that. I gotta say, it’s honestly a heartbreak. I love that first movie so much, so much, it’s one of my favorite movies. We had Will Beall do a draft on [the Legend of Conan script]. He killed it. Our take was Conan, 30 years later, a story like the Clint Eastwood Unforgiven. It was so awesome. Ultimately, the budget was big, the studio was not really sure of the title, and the relevance in the marketplace. They ended up letting it go. I think they’re gonna look to do a TV show or something with it. But just to be associated with it, pitch it to Arnold, have him get so excited, there was a moment of magic for me, personally [laughs]. You never know, down the road we may revisit!

Beall is of course tackling AQUAMAN, and was just hired to do the remake of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, so he's not hurting for work, but his idea for THE LEGEND OF CONAN apparently won't see the light of day at this point. This comes off words from Schwarzenegger in the past, who conveyed his excitement saying the story “WILL be told and that movie WILL be done.”

I guess there’s not much more to say. The studio probably decided there wasn’t much box office room for the movie, especially after CONAN THE BARBARIAN with Jason Momoa tanked.  Even Schwarzenegger’s muscular enthusiasm wasn’t enough to convince them. That said, it sounds like they may explore the cheaper option of TV, which could be well suited for the adventures of such a legendary figure. But the prospect of “CONAN meets UNFORGIVEN” sounded too good to be true, which I guess it was. Shed a tear for Schwarzenegger and his massive sword.

Good, make a sequel to the Mamoa one

Give Mamoas Conan another go. His film was actually faithful to the character, no slave boy/ pit fighter bull.

What morons work at these studios? This is a no brainer film, a film that could be a solid return to an absolute classic series. So they can't bank on this but they can bank on 80% of the other crap that comes out at a profit loss? Unbelievable. Time to clean out the Hollywood studio swamp...

Nooooo

Noooooo. They make stupid movies like Baywatch, Power Rangers etc etc and they dont make this movie with awesome character we grew up and love. Conan the Barbarian is one of my favourite top 3 movies of Arnold. And making it Unforgiven style that would be awesome. Look the movie Logan. R rated and it was one of the best X-men movies and Wolverive movies.

Universal should look at the success (both creatively and financially) of Logan and give this a hard green light.

An old Schwarzenegger-Conan going on one last adventure, Unforgiven-style, is what the world needs. Man, is there anything more frustrating as a movie fan than having a tantalizing premise dangled in front of you, only for a blind studio to trip over themselves in their hurry to make the wrong decision?

That last scene in Barbarian just sets up a bitter, restless old Conan for one last outing. This news is truly one of the most idiotic decisions I've heard. No doubt we'll see Ghostbusters II...

Raw Deal

They should have done this FIRST before any Terminator films, or anything else..

Im sure the negative response from the Terminator films, probably gave the studio mixed feelings about Arnold's on screen popularity. Had they done it right away, it probably would been done, and made a lot of fans happy.

This totally ruined my day to hear, the first movie is my favorite movie of all time. But hey, at least we get 14 more Transformers movies and things like the Mummy remake, as well as sure box office smashes like Wonder Woman. Also looking forward to an inevitable 3rd reboot of the Fantastic Four.

This is bogus. Imagine if this could have been Fury Road-good. Tall order, but I would love for that to have happened.

Fucking bullshit.
so many garbage movies get made that no one wants - but yet a movie that most seem to want (i certainly do, as Barbarian is actually my favorite movie of all time - i have a tattoo to prove it) doesnt get the greenlight.
Fuck that!
