The MPAA makes it official: Expendables 3 is PG-13

07.02.2014

This should not come as a surprise to anyone, as Sylvester Stallone has been pretty vocal about the PG-13 rating they were aiming for with THE EXPENDABLES 3. Now the MPAA has officially made it . . . official, and THE EXPENDABLES 3 will be rated PG-13 for:

Violence including intense sustained gun battles and fight scenes, and for language.

When word of a PG-13 Expendables hit (even back when EXPENDABLES 2 may have been PG-13), people were really up in arms. They still are! I understand where those people are coming from, I really do. When THE EXPENDABLES was first brought forth, it was supposed to emulate all the great action films of yesteryear. And you know what? Most of those films were a hard R, and better for it. I could list 'em, but you all know what they are. THE EXPENDABLES movies thus far have been okay at best. Stallone's already commented on the obvious, but the sequel took things too far into the spectrum of ridiculous one-liners, and the first was an experimental project. That, to me, is the great appeal to the franchise, as they are figuring things out as they go. Fine-tuning, if you will. THE EXPENDABLES 3 has the biggest cast so far of popular action stars, and I'd rather they try something different with this one than follow the format of the previous two. If that means a PG-13 rating, so be it. After all, are there not great action films that are PG-13? This territory has been covered in-depth, but there are times when the R-rating does matter, and when a PG-13 is okay. I feel that if it's planned beforehand, that's just dandy. For those who disagree, perhaps if this movie fails, they'll try going back to an R-rated format. Either way, I definitely want to see how this flick fares come August.

The now PG-13 rated EXPENDABLES 3 will hit theaters on August 15, 2014.

you know what I'm more tired of than PG-13 ratings with R-rated material? Getting worked up about those ratings. Seriously it doesn't do any good and is just the way the business has gone, adult R-rated material has found a better home on TV nowadays. I'll just cross my fingers EX 3 delivers regardless.

PG-13 OH MY STARS???? OH NO!!!!

you're all a big bunch of baby whiners... c'mon!! the last movie rocked and so did the first one. the PG 13 rating doesn't even matter in the end all I care about is the final product.... and I hope its a good one.
too bad Willis opted out eh?
but is anybody creeped out at the fact that Wesley Snipes looks an awful lot like OJ Simpson from the Naked Gun movie?

The airport scene from the second one:
[link]
It's ridiculously tame to where the R rating is a slap in the face. The 3rd will be even more toned down.
I do find it funny how Bruce Willis's new one, Sin City, is a hard R and will go against it a week after.

even more lameness

if the first two didn't suck enough we get a PG_13 garbage one. Fantastic.

Instead of a hard R 80's homage, we're getting a Fast and Furious ripoff for kids. The 2nd one sucked and could have been PG-13. They just had to give Chuck Norris a cameo to do a lame joke for 10 year old kids.Fuck this franchise..Bring on The Raid 3.

I'm one who is definitely disappointed by this rating. The whole point was to go back and make a vintage action flick with all the best names who made a living in R rated shoot 'em up stories. If I knew this was a careful decision that was supposed to make the movie better, ok fine. But nowadays it's all about money. It's nothing more than trying to increase ticket sales. And Stallone was quoted as saying he owed the younger audience, but that's a total crock. The younger audience doesn't

It's the rest of us who grew up watching him and the other stars, and made those movies into cult classics. If he owes anyone, it's us!

So "The Expendables 3" is officially rated PG-13. So what do I think? Eh. It's not a surprise really since Sly already confirmed it a while ago. I know that a lot fans are disappointed by this but it doesn't bother me 'cause I've Sadi this many times before: I don't care if a film (action, horror etc.) is PG-13 or R rated, as long as the film itself is good. If the film still delivers at being a fun kick arse ride for a fan of the series like me, than it has done its job. To me that's what

Why does it even matter? Think about it:

No R-rating also means NO CG blood. To me personally, the shitty 'unpractical' use of CG blood were the least in quality we've gotten from the first two Expendables movies. In every PG-13 flick, the MPAA will allow the use of one "Fuck" related word to be used, anyways. I think the issue or what we should be worried about is the scope of action we're getting. If it's shot well (and not filled with so much generic fucking shaky cam) then I guess we should have a watchable Expendables flick.

(The "rest in pieces" scene in the second movie is a perfect example of how AWFUL the CG blood is rendered in these movies. It even lowers the quality of the movie). I mean, how cheesy and cheap does the CG blood look in the Expendables movies? Anyone agree?

PG-13 means you even have to censor the fucking audio to make it less impacting.
It taints the entire fucking film.
Fuck this shit. I'll wait for the true unrated cut.

MPAA makes it official: The movie is going to suck

Yup, you heard it here first folks. Expendables 3 will be just as horrible as Expendables 2. CGI blood here we come. I am assuming this will bomb just like everyone is predicting. I hope it does. PG-13 for a franchise that was literally made to put R rated action movies back in the market is unacceptable.

People need to be honest. The only reason The Expendables 2 was rated R was because of post production blood, and added cuss words. So, in my opinion, this isn't really big news at all.

The second one felt like a PG-13 movie that they bumped up to an R by adding CGI blood effects to appease the fans. I like action movies with blood and gore, and I hate seeing R rated movies get watered down to PG-13. But in the second one the CGI blood just seemed unnecessary, and didn't really make the movie better or worse. If the 3rd one succeeds or fails, it won't be due to the rating. I'm okay with this for now.

ive just accepted it.

My daughter has watched the 1st 2 on Netflix. She understands the nature of it. Well, cause I've educated her on 80s action movies. But I promised her if this one was 13 I'd take her

I loved expendables 2!!!

I thought it was the best one. Mainly because I loved all the one liners and all the actors making fun of their selfs and old movies. I really really loved the chuck noris jokes. The movie was pretty damn close to being a spoof of the action genre. But the best part was the over the top action and blood. Im really bummed that the next one wont have any blood, because thats what so many of the 80s action movies that theyre paying tributes to had, I hope the 3rd one dosnt take its self to

I think the reluctance of Stallone to ever fully embrace an R rating (sex, drug use, nudity) is reason enough to aim for money vs. graphic violence. The Expendables is a throwback to old-school adventure fun. Sure, we won't get as many money-shots of bad guys getting it, but that aside, I don't think we're missing much that would've been there if they HAD tried for an R.

hahaha. I have no problem with them making a balls to the wall R-rated movie, but its hard to care about them "downgrading" to a PG-13, when Sly was pretty much already making PG-13 movies that were getting ceremonial Rs as far as I'm concerned.

To be honest I really enjoy these movies and the PG-13 does bother me only because an R gives the feeling of "anything goes." There could be extreme violence, nudity, as much cursing as they want. The PG-13 gives it a slightly limiting feel and a movie like this shouldn't have limits.

However, none of that really matters because I'll be there opening night or at an early showing with popcorn in hand. Plus...Mel Gibson!!!

Who cares? The last 2 were barely R. They had some CGI blood and a little forehead drip that all action heroes get, and that's it. They were the tamest friggin' R-rated movies I have ever seen. I doubt anyone will even notice this is PG-13. Sly beheads a dude for maybe 1 frame, and Statham tricks a guy into a helicopter propeller again for maybe like 1 frame. The guy who gets blown up into 2 pieces right at the beginning of the first one is still the height of this franchises awesomeness.

Well anyone pissed off over this should consider that the only way for these movies to survive is to make more money. No one supported the R rated movies that came out and they all flopped. So this is the only way out.
I hope enough people go to see it now that it's PG-13. Temple of Doom was PG-13 and a guy got his heart ripped out of his chest - so it aint all bad!

I'm fine with this. The new trailer, with Harrison Ford laughing his ass off as he flies that plane, has me completely sold. Would the movie be better as an 80s action movie homage with lots of blood, swearing, maybe some nudity? Most likely. But is it a deal-breaker and does the rating alone mean the movie will be terrible? Not for me.
