The new poster for Red Tails is rather colorful

Aug. 17, 2011by:

At first I didn't know if I should be taking RED TAILS seriously. Terrance Howard? Not so bad. Cuba Gooding Jr.? Doesn't he do movies of the week now? What happened there?

Then someone let me know that George Lucas was involved as well as Bryan Cranston. That was the point when I realized this wasn't a straight to Redbox rental. Maybe you didn't get the same feeling...

A poster for the film debuted over at MTV today. It's colorful and makes me think it should be a poster for that non-Pixar movie PLANES. Why isn't Cranton's name on the poster? I want answers. Check it out below.

Really long synopsis: 1944. World War II rages and the fate of the free world hangs in the balance. Meanwhile the black pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program are courageously waging two wars at once one against enemies overseas, and the other against discrimination within the military and back home. Racial prejudices have long held ace airman Martin Easy Julian (Nate Parker) and his black pilots back at base leaving them with little to do but further hone their flying skills while their white counterparts are shipped out to combat after a mere three months of training. Mistakenly deemed inferior and assigned only second-rate planes and missions, the pilots of Tuskegee have mastered the skies with ease but have not been granted the opportunity to truly spread their wings. Until now.

As the war in Europe continues to take its dire toll on Allied forces, Pentagon brass has no recourse but to reconsider these under-utilized pilots for combat duty. Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, Col. A.J. Bullard (Terrence Howard) awards them the ultimate chance to prove their mettle high above. Undaunted by the prospect of providing safe escort to bombers in broad daylight a mission so dangerous that the RAF has refused it and the white fighter groups have sustained substantial losses Easys pilots at last join the fiery aerial fray. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies in a heroic endeavor to combat the enemy and the discrimination that has kept them down for so long.

Seems to me this poster was going for that sort of pulp war/adventure novel book cover vibe, and in that respect it ain't too bad.

I'm not a George Lucas hating fanboy by any means, but Crystal Skull was kinda hollow and the Star Wars prequels bored me to tears.. so I'll pass.

I mean, this poster just screams "opening of Episode III" - too much shit for no reason.

So you base your decision whether to see a movie by some of the director's films rather than the movie itself? Mmkay.

Why would I not, though? Don't we form our opinions based on the evidence we're presented as well as the trailer? His last 4 movies have been flat, full of CGI, awkward lines of dialogue and a bit lifeless. The trailer for Red Tails had all of the above. His track record is films that aren't my types of movies.. so I'm not as interested and will probably pass.

Of course you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover but we all do. Who knows, maybe it'll surprise me.

I completely agree. Harrison Ford recently said something along the lines that those directors who rely too much on CGI lose sight of 'human scale.' And it just becomes boring. You can bet he was counting Lucas among those people. This doesn't look any different.

I didn't like those particular movies either, they were lacklustre to say the least. I didn't mind the trailer that much, but yes it does have some similar elements.

I think this story is a good one and worth telling, but it too may turn out to be lame and underwhelming.

I love how the poster proudly announces how it stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard.

As if those names mean anything to modern audiences.
Honestly the poster is far, far, FAR too busy. While the cartoony colours and exciting fight in concept works. If done correctly it could have looked like the modern take on a40s comic cover, pulp fiction novel cover or propaganda poster. However by adding sparks, fire and explosions to anywhere where there's room it causes the focus to be lost. What I do like is the fleshing out of primary reds and blues. Like I said earlier, in concept

It would have been much neater and more successful had there only been two planes. One Red Tail, one enemy. With perhaps a little fire and gunfire.

I'll give this a mild thumbs down.

does look pretty unrealistic for such a CG powerhouse of a huge budget movie

I mean come on now, really? It doesn't look bad, but it's not fooling anyone into thinking it's real (which with todays tech could've definitely been the case with the right studio/workers behind the effects)

however this movie -- who cares. The real flying/plane movie that I'm looking forward to is John Woo's epic IMAX feature film (and by that I mean it's NOT a documentary, it's a hollywood style movie just SHOT with IMAX cameras, how fucking cool is that?)

btw love the random explosion

btw love the random explosion in the bottom right corner of the poster that has nothing to do with ANYTHING in the image.
