Pretty soon, NASA won't be sending any more men into space. But that doesn't mean you wont' be able to pay a visit to the final frontier yourself, starting in June.

The new STAR TREK LIVE experience in Florida will give you the chance to follow in the footsteps of James Tiberius Kirk (presumably the most recent incarnation), but you'll have to trek a bit outside the Disney/Universal/Sea World area of Orlando, since the latest Federation adventure is located at Kennedy Space Center. The details:

Audience members join Starfleet Academy only to be unexpectedly whisked into an adventure steeped in the grand tradition of Star Trek. STAR TREK LIVE combines cutting-edge special effects, unmatched audience interaction, cool science and on-screen appearances from Captain Kirk and Spock themselves to create an exhilarating and unforgettable theatrical experience.

Eager to learn from Starfleet's best and brightest, our cadets assemble, anxious to prepare for their first day at the Academy. As we are introduced to the Academy, the Earth itself comes under attack from a renegade Romulan, leaving the fate of the future itself in the hands of our cadets. Our cadets will have to quickly learn the intricacies of living and working in space, modern space travel and the latest in communication and technology as they draw on the achievements of science in the 21st century. It will require all our knowledge, ingenuity, logic and an exploration of science to discover what is happening and how to set things right before it's too late!

Extra Tidbit: At least there's another use for Kennedy now that the space shuttle program is permanently grounded. Sad.

KSC is 10 minutes from my house and I had no idea they were doing this. They showed STAR TREK during it's run in theaters, and it was KSC's first film to play at their IMAX theater. Shuttles and rockets go up all the time and I guess I took it for granted. Obama will be here on THursday to tell us our little town isn't going to die.

although a Star Trek attraction sounds good, this is still a pretty depressing article - "we're giving up of meaningful space exploration, but instead here's a theme park ride about how awesome it could have been." - really gives you faith in the future of the human race...

Star Trek: The Experience

I had a chance to go on the ride in Las Vegas before they shut it down. Besides the normal motion shuttle ride, they actually simulated the transporter effect of beaming you onto the NCC-1701 Enterprise bridge(God that sounded geeky)! It was cool seeing all the props and set replicas as well, I loved it!

This sounds like it has potential, but I'm worried they'll be drawing too much from the J.J. revised TREK mythology. Which I honestly just didn't really dig all that much.

Some jobs for the Space Coast

Well maybe this provide some jobs for the Space Coast in the short term. With the pending retirement of the shuttle, and the administration cancelling the Constellation program, the Space Coast is about to lose a lot of high-tech jobs. Those are jobs that are just going to disappear in this country. That administration figures they'll get picked up by civilian space efforts and defense contractors. I'm not so sure. Civilian/commercial space ventures aren't ready to pick up the slack yet.

Sad

It's horrible to see manned space exploration for America coming to an end for the unforeseen future.
