The non-Hammer Winklevoss is the non-Neeson Ra's al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises

Apr. 8, 2011by:

You saw actor Josh Pence in THE SOCIAL NETWORK and didn't even realize it -- at least not until the behind-the-scenes clips and discussion revealed him as the second Winklevoss twin, whose face was digitally replaced by Armie Hammer's chiseled mug.

Pence is going to get some major face-time next year in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy-topper THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Well, Pence's actual screen time will be brief... but you know everyone in the world is going to see the movie multiple times, so it certainly won't hurt his career. Particularly since Pence will be playing the younger version of BATMAN BEGINS villain Ra's al Ghul, previously portrayed by Liam Neeson before he took a vertical train ride.

Heat Vision says the character will be seen in flashbacks 30 years prior to the events in RISES. Considering the secrecy surrounding the anticipated project, the revelation of even something fairly minor is somewhat surprising, but it would make sense given the popular speculation that Marion Cotillard will be playing vengeful daughter Talia al Ghul. Feel free to make your guesses as to how it all fits together.

The sequel also has Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Morgan Freeman, Juno Temple, and of course Christian Bale hanging out in Gotham City.

Extra Tidbit: Pence could end up being reasonably well-known before his retcon into Batman's past, but that depends on how many people show up to the adaptation of the BATTLESHIP board game.

Thanks a lot!!

Thanks for spoiling that Talia will be in the film since that is the only reason for the young Ra's to be in it. GREAT job JoBlo!! How about NOT putting something that spoilerish in the headline next time!

i would say if you don't want plot details then why are you coming to a place that tells about the production. because that is really nothing but spoilers

Hmmm, 30 years prior to the events of TDKR....30 is about the right age for Talia, so I'm thinking we're seeing a flashback to Ra's when his wife is murdered and his daughter Talia (probably very young) is taken away from him as he recounts in BB. Could it be that Ra's was in Gotham 30 years prior when the League of Shadows was trying to take down the city using economics? Maybe Ra's ran afoul of the Falconi family or other mafia and they are the ones who killed his wife and took his

This guy got shafted by Fincher in The Social Network. I noticed in a few wide shots you can tell it's him and not Armie (in the scene in where they read about Mark in the newspaper and they're eating), but I think it was a little tacky for them to not figure out what they were going to do before they started filming.

let me just say...

I've been coming to Joblo for many years and this is by far the worst title of a news article in the sites history.

Left field

At once I have a better idea of where Nolan is going...but just how he's going to get there is even more of a mystery.

And again raises the question: We now have Catwoman, Bane, Ra's (and probably Thalia)...who the fuck is JGL playing if not Alberto Falcone?

TDKR's Opening?

Wow, color me surprised. That's extremely interesting. It has a little touch of LOST thrown in. Nolan is really going full circle with this one. Never would have expected to see Ra's Al Ghul's background story visually after hearing bits and pieces of it in Batman Begins. I suspect this to be the "prologue" to the actual film. Nobody would see it coming. I'm hyped.

A Spoiler Alert Would Be Nice...

I don't mean to sound like an a**hole, but a lil' spoiler alert would have been nice. Not all of us want to know how the story pans out, especially that it's going to have flashbacks of a former foe. Those are things I'd like to see for myself in the movie. So, maybe in the future, the headline doesn't have to necessarily tell the entire story? There are other ways to write a headline without giving every detail away, I'm sure.

i don't really like the idea of the 3rd revisiting aspects of the 1st - like ra's al ghul and/or any related characters/stories.

i'd have no problem with nolan revisiting aspects of TDK. JGL as joker/joker cameo....or something. TDK was way better than Begins, imo.

Very interesting. This isn't exactly minor, since it does contain a hint about the story. I have no idea what hint that is, but it's something. I grow ever more curious to know what Nolan has planned this time around.

Hmmm...

....why not just have Liam Neeson in said flashbacks. Great way to imply he's immortal without directly stating it...

The fanboy in me wants this whole "30 years younger" thing to be a smoke screen and it's really a rejuvinated by way of Lazarus pit Rhas Al Ghul. But, Nolan hates fantasy so I guess this will have to do. Good for Pence though, that guy deserves a break.

Saying "but Nolan hates fantasy" is both short sighted and a needless low blow.

Good news! What i do think is that Neeson will be returning in the flick (non-flash back) I suspect that its just being kept hush-hush...I wouldnt be surprised to see him revel himself during the third act

Wow, Nolan really keeps you guessing (and I like it that way). I guess the rumors of Talia being in the movie are true. I wonder if the League of Shadows will be back as well. It seems a little Death Star II-ish (been there, done that), but I trust Nolan and like that he's trying to make his trilogy come full circle.

cool

i can't wait til the nolan series is over be nice to see someone else take over batman and tell stories where he already is batman like burton's tales, and before i get attacked, i'm not saying nolan made bad batman tales, i'm saying i'll be glad to see some more mythos brought into the movie, hell even a cool damien wayne, jason todd, and the red hood. i know i'm in the minority but i'm looking forward to the justice league movie. and a recast of batman. but the return of ghul is

I agree with this, this last flick is gonna be an amazing finish to Nolans series. Once its done I wouldnt mind someone else having a different take on Batman. There is no doubt after Nolan is done that someone will be taking over, whether its on the Nolan-batman universe or something fresh its gonna happen. The Batman-universe is bigger then Nolan and should no way stop at his third film. But I'm full against the justice league film as of now. DC should just stick with solo movies for now.

he has told two storys about bruce becoming batman, he is not batman yet you don't just put on a costume and are a character it takes time. by the end of this one he might be the perfect dark knight right now though he is the tom welling. i can't wait to see that moment where i'm like ok now he's finally batman. but again i still love the movies, and think they are very good, but can't wait to see a new hand in the mix

Just for shits n' giggles

If you find yourself dealing with an unexpected back story and a preponderance of exposition, then the sequel rules DO NOT apply. Because you are not dealing with a sequel, you are dealing with the concluding chapter of a TRILOGY.

That's right, it's a rarity in the superhero field but it does exist, and it is a force to be reckoned with! Because true trilogies are all about going back to the beginning (get it? Batman BEGINning) and discovering something that wasn't true from the get go.

Batman BEGINning) and discovering something that wasn't true from the get go. Spider-Man, Godfather, Jedi..all revealed something that we thought was true that wasn't true. So if it IS a trilogy you are dealing with, here are some super trilogy rules:

1. You got a criminal mastermind (Bane) who's going to be super human. Stabbing him won't work. Shooting him won't work. Basically in "The Dark Knight Rises" you gotta cryogenically freeze his head, decapitate him, or blow him up.

2. Anyone including the main character can die. (or have his back broken) This means you Bruce. I'm sorry. It's the final chapter. It could be fucking 'Reservoir Dogs' by the time this thing is through.

3. The past will come back to bite you in the ass. (a young Ra's Al Ghul) Whatever you think you know about the past, forget it. The past is not at rest. Any sins you think were committed in the past are about to break out and destroy you!

How come the guy looks like a cross between Liam Neeson and Eric Bana? Any news about the next Batman is a good news to me.

I'd like to see Liam come back for a short flashback cameo. Damn he did a great job, especially when he explains to Bruce how to become a "legend". Total and utter comic book worship from the writer to Liams lips.
