The OC's Ben McKenzie will play Jim Gordon in Fox's Gotham television series

02.10.2014

I didn't realize Jim Gordon is a fan of indie bands. Deadline has learned The O.C. and Southland star Ben McKenzie has been cast as detective Jim Gordon in Fox's upcoming television series Gotham. McKenzie's Gordon will be, "an idealistic rookie detective for Gotham City Open Police Departmentís Homicide Squad, a former college football star and a war hero." The show will also feature a young Bruce Wayne, and villains such as the Riddler, the Penguin, and Catwoman. Danny Cannon (CSI, Nikita, I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER) will be directing the series from a script by The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller.

This won't be Ben McKenzie's first time in Batman territory though. The actor previously voiced the Dark Knight in the fantastic animated movie BATMAN: YEAR ONE, with Bryan Cranston as the voice of Jim Gordon.

I'm sure Ben McKenzie probably wasn't at the top of most of your list of actors you'd want to see play the future commissioner, but I actually think McKenzie will make a pretty decent Jim Gordon. He's got the right look for the part, but he better be wearing Gordon's trademark glasses in the new show, or I'm not going to be happy.

Speaking of happy, are you pleased with this casting decision, or do you think someone else should play Gordon in Fox's Gotham?

No word on when Gotham might start airing on Fox, but it could premiere as early as this Fall.

Still not sold on the idea of this show. If Gordon can take down the Riddler, Catwoman, and Penguin himself, there's no need for Batman.
I'd love a proper Batman Animated series like the one from the 90's; showing the evolution of batman, his sidekicks and villains, over the course of several years. Cover all the characters the movies didn't have the time tell.

Heh, Danny Cannon also directed the original Judge Dredd with Stallone, at least he frames things nicely. The show has potential, hopefully they see it through...

Haha... When I first read this announcement on a different site I initially made the mistake of thinking he was James Gordon for the Batman Vs Superman film and was like "nooooooo! too young, TOO YOUNG!".

But for this Gotham series... I think he'll be fine. I'm both intrigued and concerned about this series. Of course I'll give it a go... and I hope it's awesome. The fact they've said we'll be seeing the likes of the Riddler etc... that pleases mean... as long as they're not all 10year

Though going back to my original mistake - I really want to know who's going to be playing Gordon in BvS?!!!

Im not crazy about the show idea. I'd rather see a full fledged Batman TV series instead of a prequel series focused on Gordon and Batman's villains popping up on Arrow occasionally. But what do I know, maybe making a live action series about 50 years after the last one is too soon?

The series finale will have his character finally donning the glasses and a fake moustache.

He's a good actor and really showed his chops on Southland. I think he'll do a fine job with the role. Just hopefully the show is as good as he is.

Gordon is a war hero and former football star? Since when? That has test marketing written all over it. And I can guarantee he won't have the glasses or mustache. TV execs are terrified of covering up a young face because they're afraid it will turn off their targeted audience for some reason. He'll have mustache stubble if we're lucky (Arrow style, since CW won't give Oliver Queen a proper goatee for the same reason)

I don't know about a football star, but he references being extremely well trained several times (taking out green berets and stuff like that) from being in the military in Batman: Year One.

Oliver will probably have the goatee by the end of the series.

dseal2 - Y'know, I forgot about that. I've read so many Gordon stories over the years that I can't remember every tidbit. But you're right, he did have a military history. I always thought he became a cop as soon as he got out of school.

Speaking as a young guy sporting a goatee I find that insulting of CW to assume that

Yeah, there's a LOT of stories to keep in mind. I can't remember Gordon ever being a football star and I could be forgetting or just missed a story... I hope not though. Gordon may have played football but a star?

Eh...

I think this might be cool, but I know this show will make all the Batman fanboys go nuts because Batman isn't it.. Another choice by DC to confuse the fans and not have a collected universe. Arrow is one universe, the movie universe, the dark knight universe and now the GCPD universe...smooth move DC smooth move.

He voiced Batman in Batman: Year One, in which Bryan Cranston voiced Gordon. That's probably who should be taking the role but they are skewing younger so no giant opposition to this casting for now. Just hope they don't screw the series up.

Why should Cranston get the role of a young Gordon?

I meant that Cranston should get the role of Gordon. Since they're skewing younger it makes sense that he isn't getting it.

I'm not familiar with him but him in that uniform sort of make it work. We'll see. This Gotham series has a great potential. It can be as successful as Arrow is now. On the other hand, if it has too many subplots or nowhere to go, it might end up as Birds of Prey TV series several years ago.

.

I'll agree that he does have the right look, I can easily picture him as a young Gordon. I'll give this a go when it comes out, can't be worse than agents of shield.

Exactly. Agents of shield and now "gotham" it's just so dumb. Even smallville to an extent with all their skirting around. I have an idea guys let's make a batman based show but get this! It doesn't have anything to do with him. Just a cop show about gordon? That's gold!!!!!
