The official synopsis for Len Wiseman's Mars-less Total Recall remake

Jan. 16, 2012by:

I'm still not sure how you can remake TOTAL RECALL and not set it in Mars, but Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback's script stays far away. But seriously- besides Schwarzenegger screaming about giving the people air or the three breasted prostitute, don't most people associate the original with the red planet?

The film will be directed by Len Wiseman of such fine pieces of cinema like UNDERWORLD and LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, and it stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, John Cho and Bill Nighy. I'm so upset that the cast looks so good because everything else about this film seems like a bad idea.

Sony has today released the longest description of the film yet and it's certainly familiar, even if the setting isn't.

"Total Recall" is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

So, pretty much the same film. TOTAL RECALL has a release date of August 3rd. Can anything top this?

Comic Con Footage

I too was at the Comic Con panel and I was very against them remaking Total Recall UNTIL I saw the footage...wow! It looks awesome! The scene in which Quaid "snaps" will blow you away. I love the original but this definitely looks like a very interesting interpretation. Also Kurt Wimmer kicks ass. Had the opportunity to meet and talk to him at a Q&A and he's an incredibly intelligent guy. I'm sure his script is bad ass.

That picture can't be from the movie. It's not blue enough to be a Wiseman movie.

If I wanna watch a PG-13 Total Recall I'll watch the original on TV with all the good stuff cut out.

I'll reserve judgement until I see it. Most likely that will be when it's in the $5 bin at walmart.

Mark my words, this will be good. And isn't the fact that it's way different from the first movie a GOOD THING? Why the hell are we complaining that the movies are TOO DIFFERENT? lmao

I read the Kurt Wimmer draft for this new version and I gotta say they're veering away from the campiness of Verhoeven's version, hence no Mars and such. There are some interesting concepts and elements that I enjoyed, and there's an action sequence that somewhat reminded me of Minority Report with the futuristic city and the different levels of the city, etc. There are quite a bit of 'homages' to the original, and there's an awesome action sequence towards the end that is probably the

However I do hope that the subsequent polishes by James Vanderbilt added a tad more depth to the characters and explore the themes of reality more, otherwise it's pretty standard. But still should be fun.

Looks great from the footage

I have to agree with ElderPredator. I also saw the footage at Comic Con and between this, Spider-man, Ghost Rider, Underworld 4, The Raven and about a dozen other films slated for this year this was the one film that most impressed me. The original Total Recall is fun for an 80s action film but is a bit too campy to capture what Philip K Dick had in mind. Schwarzenegger didn't fit into the mold of the character in the original story, supposed to be an average joe, hence it being hard to buy him

I look forward seeing more of this film as the official trailer is released. With every film more Wisman makes I think he gets a little bit better than before. I can see from the action here how much he's improved since Live Free or Die Hard.

Retread Boredom

Already saw Total Recall 20 some years ago.
Should have chosen a different Phillip K. Dick story to do rather than wash, rinse, and repeat this one.
Looks like this will be following in the footsteps of such great Colin Ferrell films as SWAT, Miami Vice, and Fright Night to early DVD release and the $5 DVD bin at Wal-Mart.
Exit Question: Has Ferrell done any original films, or only retreads?

Well, there was In Bruges, Minority Report, The Way Back, Tigerland, Crazyheart, and the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, but yeah, I guess you know what you're talking about.

And considering the star isn't really the be-all, end-all when it comes to a film's quality, maybe you should be more worried about the garbage Len Wiseman has created instead.

Uh, I didn't know. That's why I was asking the question.
But thanks for answering.
Who says I'm a fan of Len Wiseman?

Same film...

different setting. I can deal with that. Just as long as they don't ruin it. I am not a fan of collin but w/e I can live with him.

I love how they replaced a truly interesting looking love interest who had genuine gravitas with Jessica Biel, who's acting ability is just slightly more advanced than her blonde equivalent Blake Lively. Ugh. I want to like this. Farrell was underrated in Fright Night and Bryan Cranston can do no wrong, but still I say ugh.

I will change my rating from neutral to hip if Arnold does the commentary on the new one as well.

Saw footage at Comic-Con...

And I was pleasantly surprised by how different it looks and Colin looks to kick some major ass. Plus we got a very quick glimpse of Kate and Jessica in a hardcore bitch fight and that boys is worth the price of admission alone.
