The Oscar for Best Original Song may go to one of these 75 potential nominees

Dec. 13, 2012by: Alex Maidy

In recent years, we have seen a less than stellar group of nominees for Best Original Song, culminating in the 2 song category last year which was won by Bret McKenzie for "Man or Muppet". Could we have an uneventful category again this year? Not if this list of candidates has anything to say about it.

The Academy unveiled the list of all 75 songs that are eligible for the Oscar this year, including some sure bets like Adele's SKYFALL theme or the new LES MISERABLES song "Suddenly" which was written specifically for the film. DJANGO UNCHAINED has four songs in contention while animated movies like WRECK-IT RALPH, BRAVE, MADAGASCAR 3, and ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT has some as well.

I would say Adele is the likely frontrunner in this category, but hopefully we will see some unique nominees. Check out the full list below.

A year of good songs!

There are some actual good songs this year. Gotta nominate these ones:
"Skyfall" from SKYFALL
Everybody Needs a Best Friend from TED
"Baddest Man Alive" from THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS
Any song from "DJANGO UNCHAINED"

i think the only sure thing here is that Les Mis and Skyfall will get nominations. to which i say give it to Skyfall
I'd also like to see brave get one, that had some really good music.

I'd love to see the nomination process of this category. I hear its very different than other categories. Most of the academy in this section are in a room together listening and voting for the songs. Some of these people are world class musicians and hollywood legends, so to be in the same room just

an absolute joke

that Soundgarden's Live to Rise from The Avengers isn't in the 75. Seriously, wow. Just wow. Not an amazing song, but a damn good song and one of the very best if not the best original movie song of the year -- one that bests most of the ones on this list for sure too.

If Adele's name wasn't attached to that Bond theme, no-one would give it the time of day. Sloppy song, and the worst bond theme in 25 years. I can see the boring song from Les Mis taking this. Shame to see Holy Motors snubbed in this category.

not the worst in 25 years at all, but I do think it's overrated myself. It's a solid, maybe good theme for a Bond movie but it is pretty generic.

Skyfall

Skyfall is a great song. I think that it captured the mood of the movie really really well. I heard it before I saw the movie or really knew what it was about and I thought that it was a really great example of a song that digs into you emotionally. I absolutely love the part of the song where the symphony plays the Bond music. Gets me every time.
I haven't seen a lot of these movies so I haven't heard the songs, so I can't make a guess about who the winner would be.

Right now, I'm partial to "Still Dream" from Rise of the Guardians. A gorgeous, gorgeous song. However, I'm still puzzled as to why only two songs made the final nomination list last year, Man or Muppet and Real in Rio. Weren't there about five songs nominated in most previous years?
