The Oscar push begins for Andy Serkis in Rise of the Apes

Nov. 30, 2011by: Paul Tassi

Yes, I know it's called RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, but I refuse to give that stupid title its due.

Anyway, it seems that Fox is moving forward with a big Oscar push for Andy Serkis to land a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as Caesar in RISE OF THE APES, despite his face never appearing onscreen.

Tim Rothman, CEO of Fox, had this to say about Serkis deserving the nod:

"I think we may be at the place where we will see a first-ever in Hollywood this year, which is to see Andy Serkis get nominated for a best supporting actor for Planet of theApes , even though his face never actually appears. But his performance appears, so we are going to push that hard. I think part of what we have to do is help educate people to understand that that is 100 percent his performance. It is great emotional acting.

Tom Hanks didn’t have to say any dialogue in Castaway for it to be a great performance… The emotionality – what you see and what you feel – he did it. I saw him. I watched him. Then they digitally overlaid – you can think of it as a costume – the skin and the hair of an ape. But I tell you the thing that people felt – and a lot of people where moved when they saw the movie – is because of his performance."

It's tough, while agree that Serkis was phenomenal as the ape, I think the statue should be as much his as it was the dozens and hundreds of animators at WETA who made Caesar come to life. It's that sort of complication that will probably make him not win, but it would be cool to see him nominated. What do you think?

Extra Tidbit: I'm tired of lead roles being called supporting roles so they'll have a better chance to win (see TRUE GRIT).

SHUT UP ABOUT THE TITLE!

I don't get what is so wrong about the title. It is entirely consistent with the other movies in the series. Sure, it's long, but look at the others:

Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)
Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)

How is "Rise of The Planet of The Apes" any worse than the above? In fact, the title shows CONSISTENCY, which "Rise of The Apes" does not. The movie is about the rise of the

The movie is about the rise of the Planet of the Apes, so why not title it this way? I actually fully understand why this title was selected and think it works well with the other titles in the series. Now if past movies didn't do the same, I would have a problem, but how do you fault the studio for continuing a trend?

I don't see any complication. Do any of the other acting nominee's/winners share their statues with the people who made their costumes or did their make-up? It helps bring the character to life, but no, they don't because those people have their own category for their respective work. WETA will

This is about recognizing the PERFORMANCE, not the make-up or costume, whether it be digital or practical.

Bring it..

Couldnt agree more. This was basically a digital costume.

One of the best performances of the year .

Loved every minute of it

still with the title bitching?

Anywho, I think it would be great if he was nominated. He definitely deserves it.

He should get nommed

One way to look at it...

Serkis gave 100% of the performance. WETA was responsible for making Serkis look like an ape. Completely separate, but both completely deserving in their respective categories.

Yess!! Serkis deserves the nom at the least it was the best part of the film.

I'd love to see him nominated...

Andy gave a brilliant performance but I don't think he should win as that wouldn't be fair to the dozens of animators who worked thousands of hours bringing Caesar to life.
However I think a nomination would be just as fantastic for Andy and the VFX team.

NOPE!

I love Serkis but this is silly to me. Too much of his performance is credited to the animators.

The Tom Hanks comparison was bad because that was nothing like this. They want to set precedent for giving the award to a non-speaking animated character (bad idea IMO).

It's like giving Serkis a Best Supporting Actor nom for King Kong (he did 100% of the acting, the story was 100% about him, he said absolutely NOTHING). Most of us would say that'd be stupid (I hope).

I say give them the

I say give them the special effects nom like they deserve (more likely to happen).

Serkis, I love watching your movies but you won't get this award. Hopefully one day you'll get your much-deserved Oscar.

I love both Serkis and this movie, and though the was absolutely fantastic as Caesar, but I don't think him being nominated would be appropriate (or deserved).

Wow, a lot of people drank the ape Kool-Aid.
I mean, seriously, I understand that it's a matter of opinion if you like or don't like a movie but an Oscar nomination, well that's just insane. And the cgi was SO bad on Apes.

I liked the performance, but I don't think it's far enough to get an Oscar. But it is possible. Jennifer Hudson got the Oscar, and that was the Academy's biggest mistake.

Serkis for sure, but Lithgow needs a supporting nod. He was absolutely stunning.

Agreed

I hope he gets a nom and even a win, but I would put him in Best Actor since the film revolved around Caesar more.

AMAZING performance, but...

...I'm withholding judgment until after I see THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN. And I don't just mean for Andy Serkis.

While I dont think he will win I definitely think he should get an acting nomination. His performance is what made the film and engages the audience

No you are not. Movie really wasn't good. And I really don't get all the love it's getting. And an Oscar nomination? The freaking apes looked SO fake in all their cgi glory.
