Fresh off its five Academy Award nominations yesterday, THE DEPARTED is heading back into theaters. Warner Bros. will re-release the film this weekend in 1,300 theaters giving those who may have missed it the first time around, a chance to catch up on the buzz. The film was nominated for Best Picture with Martin Scorsese taking a Best Director nom and Mark Wahlberg being recognized for his acting work. So in a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson, isn’t it just a little surprising that Mark Wahlberg is the only one nominated for an acting trophy? Weird, huh? THE DEPARTED originally hit theaters on October 6th and went on to gross over $120 million. The movie was originally scheduled to be released on DVD in mid-February and it’s unclear if the re-release will affect that date at all. Now if Picturehouse would only announce a wider release for PAN’S LABYRINTH, which despite the official site’s claim of “Now Playing Everywhere!,” I still can’t find at any theaters near me…
